In 1982 Tsfasman, Vladut and Zink, using algebraic geometry and ideas of Goppa, constructed a seqeunce of codes that exceed the Gilbert-Varshamov bound. The result was considered sensational. Furthermore, it was surprising to see these unrelated areas of mathematics collaborating. The aim of this course is to give an introduction to coding theory and to sketch the ideas of algebraic geometry that led to the new result. Finally, a number of applications of these methods of algebraic geometry to coding theory are given. Since this is a new area, there are presently no references where one can find a more extensive treatment of all the material. However, both for algebraic geometry and for coding theory excellent textbooks are available. The combination ofthe two subjects can only be found in a number ofsurvey papers. A book by C. Moreno with a complete treatment of this area is in preparation. We hope that these notes will stimulate further research and collaboration of algebraic geometers and coding theorists. What is the 'most probable' state of the cloud at intermediate times The present book provides a general yet comprehensive discourse on Schrödinger's question. Key roles in this investigation are played by conditional diffusion processes, pairs of non-linear integral equations and interacting particles systems. The introductory first chapter gives some historical background, presents the main ideas in a rather simple discrete setting and reveals the meaning of intermediate prediction to quantum mechanics. In order to answer Schrödinger's question, the book takes three distinct approaches, dealt with in separate chapters: transformation by means of a multiplicative functional, projection by means of relative entropy, and variation of a functional associated to pairs of non-linear integral equations. The book presumes a graduate level of knowledge in mathematics or physics and represents a relevant and demanding application of today's advanced probability theory. 186 pp. Englisch.

The various animal models available for studying the bronchospasm and inflammation associated with human asthma are thoroughly reviewed by internationally recognised scientists. Specific chapters focus on the problems of administering drugs to animal airways, the mechanics of assessing lung function in the models, and describe in detail the species used, from rodents to primates. The use of genetically altered animals, an area of particular interest to molecular biologists, is also considered in depth. This up-to-date and extensively referenced work will prove invaluable to pharmacologists, physiologists and other biological scientists at all levels in academia and in the pharmaceutical industry. 300 pp. Englisch.

It was hoped that the Congress would constitute a symbol of the development of the community of European nations. More than 1,300 persons attended the Congress. The purpose of the Congress was twofold. On the one hand, there was a scientific facet which consisted of forty-nine invited mathematical lectures that were intended to establish the state of the art in the various branches of pure and applied mathematics. This scientific facet also included poster sessions where participants had the opportunity of presenting their work. Furthermore, twenty-four specialized meetings were held before and after the Congress. The second facet of the Congress was more original. It consisted of six teen round tables whose aim was to review the prospects for the interactions of mathematics, not only with other sciences, but also with society and in particular with education, European policy and industry. In connection with this second goal, the Congress also succeeded in bring ing mathematics to a broader public. In addition to the round tables specific ally devoted to this question, there was a mini-festival of mathematical films and two mathematical exhibits. Moreover, a Junior Mathematical Congress was organized, in parallel with the Congress, which brought together two hundred high school students. 548 pp. Englisch.

This theory has its roots and applications in partial differential equations, mechanics and linear systems, as well as in modern operator theory and linear algebra. Over the last decade, new advances have been made in the theory of operator polynomials based on the spectral approach. The author, along with other mathematicians, participated in this development, and many of the recent results are reflected in this monograph. It is a pleasure to acknowledge help given to me by many mathematicians. First I would like to thank my teacher and colleague, I. Gohberg, whose guidance has been invaluable. Throughout many years, I have worked wtih several mathematicians on the subject of operator polynomials, and, consequently, their ideas have influenced my view of the subject; these are I. Gohberg, M. A. Kaashoek, L. Lerer, C. V. M. van der Mee, P. Lancaster, K. Clancey, M. Tismenetsky, D. A. Herrero, and A. C. M. Ran. The following mathematicians gave me advice concerning various aspects of the book: I. Gohberg, M. A. Kaashoek, A. C. M. Ran, K. Clancey, J. Rovnyak, H. Langer, P. 391 pp. Englisch.

KlingmUller Lehrstuhl fUr Genetik, Universitat Bayreuth, UniversitatsstraBe 30, 8580 Bayreuth, FRG th th On September 6 and 7 1983 the second workshop on 'Azospirillum: Genetics, Physiology, Ecology' took place at the University of Bayreuth, west Germany, organized by the genetics department. There were about 50 participants, who came from German research institutions, from other European countries, from Israel, Egypt and North and South America. The first such workshop had taken place two years ago in Bayreuth too, hence the organizers could draw on the experiences then obtained. Azospirilla have, during the past ten years, found an ever increasing scientific interest, because first, these soil bacte ria carry the genetic information for binding molecular nitrogen from the air, and second, they live in close vicinity to the roots of several grain crops and forage grasses. By exploitation of these two properties, it is hoped to develop inoculation pro cedures that result in yield increases in agriculture, in par ticular in soils poor in nitrogen. The reports on the first afternoon focussed, as a result of the Bayreuth research interest, on the genetic basis and the regulation of nitrogen fixation in Azospirillum. Here, mainly by application of most modern gene technological approaches, considerable progress in the understanding of the situation has been made, and was documented in the corresponding reports. 194 pp. Englisch.

The series' aim was to give coverage to impor tant areas of research, to introduce new active substances with thera peutic potential and to call attention to unsolved problems. This objective has not changed. The table of contents of the present volume makes evident, however, that the search for new medicines has become increasingly complex, and additional, new disciplines have entered the research arena. The series now includes reviews on bio chemical, biological, immunological, physiological and medicinal aspects of drug research. Researchers actively engaged in the various scientific fields forming the entity of drug research can benefit from the wealth of knowledge and experience of the respective authors, and will be assisted in their endeavour to discover new pharmaceutical agents. Those simply wanting to keep abreast of new developments in the complex, multi-discipline science can turn to the 'Progress in Drug Research' volumes as an almost encyclopaedic source of information without having to consult the innumerable original publications. Volume 32 contains 12 reviews, a subject index, an index for the close to 400 articles published in the series so far, and an author and titles index for all 32 volumes. 548 pp. Englisch.

Werner Kaufmann we organized the international symposium on 'VASODEPRESSOR HORMONES IN HYPERTENSION - PROSTAGLANDINS AND KININS' held in Nuremberg (FRG) as an official satellite symposium to the Meeting of the International Society of Hypertension 1986. This supplement brings together the most interesting papers presented at this symposium. In the past there were hundreds of publications in both fields, the prostaglandins and the kallikrein-kinins and there were a lot of information indic~ting that these two systems influence each other strongly. But it is not at all clear till today which role these two systems play in physiological or even pathophysio logical regulation of systemic blood pressure. So it was aim of this symposium to bring the scientists of these two fields together to discuss blood pressure regulation in respect of the prostaglandin and kallikrein-kinin system. The authors of the presented papers provided new findings, an overview of their own work, and their hypotheses in this field. We would like to thank the contributors for their excellent papers and scientific discussion. We pay particular credit to the Birkhauser Verlag AG, Basel, Switzerland, for their kind cooperation, and express particular thanks to Mrs Renate Wiesmann and Mrs Renate Cawello for writing the manuscripts. The conference was aUended by ninety scientists: about one third from France, from Germany and from third countries each. They all contributed to a highly interesting and stimulating meeting. The scientifique program consisted of four survey lectures of a more tutorical character and of 61 contributed papers covering almost all areas of optimization. In addition two informal evening sessions and a plenary discussion on further developments of optimization theory were organized. One of the main aims of the organizers was to indicate and to stress the increasing importance of optimization methods for almost all areas of science and for a fast growing number of industry branches. We hope that the conference approached this goal in a certain degree and managed to continue fruitful discussions between -theory and -applications-. Equally important to the official contributions and lectures is the -nonmeasurable part of activities inherent in such a scientific meeting. Here the charming and inspiring atmosphere of a place like Irsee helped to establish numerous new contacts between the participants and to deepen already existing ones. The conference was sponsored by the Bayerische Kultusministerium, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft and the Universities of Augsburg and Bayreuth. Their interest in the meeting and their assistance is gratefully acknowledged. We would like to thank the authors for their contributions and the referees for their helpful comments. 392 pp. Englisch.

These papers were presented and discussed in a Workshop held at Obidos, Portugal, du ring the first three days of October, 1988, and grew out of a two year period of intensive exploitation of differ ent abilities and mathematical experiences of the six participating groups, namely, in the University of Augsburg, wh ich was the co ordination center of this project, the Laboratoire Central des Ponts et Chaussees of Paris, the Aristoteles University of Thessaloniki, the University of Florence, the University of Lisbon and the University of Oxford. This project was carried out under the title 'Mathemat ical Models of Phase Transitions and Numerical Simulation' , in the framework of twinning program for stimulation of cooperation and scientific interchange, sponsored by the European Community. The underlying idea of the project was to create and study the mathematical models arising in applied engineering problems with free boundaries in a broad sense, namely in melting and freezing problems, diffusion-reaction processes, solid-solid phase transition, hysteresis phenomena, 'mushy region' descriptions, contact prob lems with friction andjor adhesion, elastoplastic deformations, etc. vi This large spectrum of applied problems have in common the main feature of brusque transitions of their qualitative behaviour that correspond, in general, to non-classical discontinuous monotone or non monotone strong nonlinearities in the mathematical equations. 412 pp. Englisch.

Klingmuller Lehrstuhl fur Genetik, Universitat Bayreuth, UniversitatsstraBe 30, 8580 Bayreuth, FRG Growth of higher plants, particularly agricultural crops, de pends on combined nitrogen. To obtain high yields, combined nitrogen has to be supplied as fertilizer. However, the che- cal production of nitrogen fertilizers is very energy consuming and costly. In underdeveloped countries there is in addition the problem of how to get such fertilizer and how to distribute it. Efforts to replace chemical nitrogen fertilizers by other means of nitrogen fertilization are therefore important. Some bacteria have the capability to use molecular nitrogen from the atmosphere. Such nitrogen is thus transformed into a bound form. Responsible for this capability is a gene group they carry, the nif genes, and an enzyme system, they produce, nitrogenase. An example for such bacteria are rhizobia, which grow in symbioses with leguminous plants, and in their root nodules bind molecular nitrogen. The host plant takes advantage of this. Less well known, but being studied with increasing intensity, are the so called Azospirillum bacteria. They too bind molecular nitrogen. But, in contrast to rhizobia, they do not form nodules on the roots of legumes, but live in loose associations with the roots of other plants, for instance maize, wheat, rice or other grain crops. By exploiting the capabilities of these bacteria it can be hoped to find a way for supplying biologically bound nit- gen to grain crops. 150 pp. Englisch.

The workshop was designed to survey the current understanding of water and solute transport through unsaturated soils under field conditions, and to foster research by discussing some unresolved key issues relative to transport modeling and experimentation in four 'Think Tank' groups. The first part of this book consists of the reports prepared by the Think Tank groups, who discussed the following topics: modeling approaches, effective large scale properties, evaluation of filed properties, and the role preferential flow. The second part contains a selection of reviewed original contributions presented at the workshop, with topics ranging from the presentation of results from large scale experiments, to improved or new modeling approaches, and to legal or policy aspects. This book is intended for researchers in soil science, hydrology, and environmental engineering who have an interest in transport and reaction processes in the unsaturated zone. It will provide them with a representative sample of current research activities, and with a group discussion of future research directions in four important areas of water and solute transport. 297 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Increasing interest has been emerging in the last decade in the field of signal recognition and transduction. This is particularly true for animal systems where an impressive amount of literature is appearing and where many important pathways have been clarified at a molecular level. In the elucidation of the functions of single components of a given pathway, gene cloning has played a major role and opened the field to the genetic engineering of these complex systems. At variance with this situation, plant systems are less well elucidated, even if in recent years exciting research of developments have been initiated especially with the view toward the most promising role plants in biotechnology. Recent studies have elucidated some of the events involved in the perception of the plant hormone signals and some steps concerning its transduction. Only for three of the five hormones in plants, namely auxin, ethylene and cytokinins, have specific receptors been isolated. The use of classical molecular approaches, together with the more recently isolated mutants, have produced crucial information on receptors and shed light on possible transduction pathways. As in the case of red light, more than one pathway can be triggered by one specific signal. Many systems involved in animal signaling are now shown to be present also in plants, and in view of the fast progress in this area, it will be possible in the near future to fully describe the content of the 'black boxes' in the reaction chain specifically triggered by a signal. 183 pp. Englisch.

Why: a workshop on trees Two main reasons motivated this workshop. First, the current plethora of tree representations in branching processes which has be come obvious by the Minneapolis IMA Congress Classica] and Modern Branching Processes in 1994. But this would not have been sufficient to organize an 'n-th' congress on branching processes. Secondly, regular discussions with researchers in algebra and computing sciences at the University of Versailles and at INRIA (lnstitut National de Recherche en Informatique et Automatique) convinced us it would be fruitful to offer the workers in these different fields the opportunity to exchange their points of view on the subject. The organizers being probabilists, a large part of the meeting (two sessions) was devoted t~ probability theor:y (not only branching processes). Nevertheless, the other three sessions focused on algorithms, on ultrametric and combinatorial aspects of trees and on disordered systems. Most papers in this volume are both of high level and of pedagogical interest. They are intended for a large public, including graduate students looking for an initiation to tree structures. The papers have been grouped into four sections: - disordered systems, - probability and trees, - large deviations, - ultrametric and algebraic aspects of trees. Some of the speakers are, unfortunately, not represented in this volume. 158 pp. Französisch, Englisch.

This field has undergone tremendous change of late and is yielding new insight into the mysteries of classical homotopy theory. The present volume comprises the refereed articles submitted at the Conference on Algebraic Topology held in Sant Feliu de Guíxols, Spain, in June 1994. Several comprehensive articles on general localization clarify the basic tools and give a report on the state of the art in the subject matter. The text is therefore accessible not only to the professional mathematician but also to the advanced student. 400 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Boundary value problems for elliptic differential-difference equations have some astonishing properties. For example, unlike elliptic differential equations, the smoothness of the generalized solutions can be broken in a bounded domain and is preserved only in some subdomains. The symbol of a self-adjoint semibounded functional differential operator can change its sign. The purpose of this book is to present for the first time general results concerning solvability and spectrum of these problems, a priori estimates and smoothness of solutions. The approach is based on the properties of elliptic operators and difference operators in Sobolev spaces. The most important features distinguishing this work are applications to different fields of science. The methods in this book are used to obtain new results regarding the solvability of nonlocal elliptic boundary value problems and the existence of Feller semigroups for multidimensional diffusion processes. Moreover, applications to control theory and aircraft and rocket technology are given. The theory is illustrated with numerous figures and examples. The book is addresssed to graduate students and researchers in partial differential equations and functional differential equations. It will also be of use to engineers in control theory and elasticity theory. 294 pp. Englisch.

At this conference 92 participants representing 15 countries par ticipated, and 64 papers were presented. This meeting was the second of a linked pair. The first was a program of advanced instruction held at the Fields Institute, Ontario, followed by a research conference. The first of these events gave rise to the volume 'Lectures on Operator Theory and its Applications', published by the American Mathematical Society for the Fields Institute in 1995. These two events were the creation of the following Program Committee: M. A. Dahleh (M. I. T. ) P. A. Fillmore (Dalhousie) B. A. Francis (Toronto) F. Ghahramani (Manitoba) K. Glover (Cambridge) I. Gohberg (Tel Aviv) T. Kailath (Stanford) P. Lancaster (Calgary), Chair H. Langer (Vienna) P. N. Shivakumar (Manitoba) A. A. Shkalikov (Moscow) B. Simon (Cal. Tech. ) H. Widom (Santa Cruz) Both events focused on the following main topics: Infinite matrices and projection methods, linear operators on indefinite scalar product spaces, differential operators and mathematical systems theory and control. This volume contains a selection of papers in modern operator theory and its appli cations. They are dedicated to recent achievements and many are written by leaders in the mentioned fields. 436 pp. Englisch.

The previous volumes are 1983-84 published privately by Tel Aviv University 1985-86 Springer Lecture Notes, Vol. 1267 1986-87 Springer Lecture Notes, Vol. 1317 1987-88 Springer Lecture Notes, Vol. 1376 1989-90 Springer Lecture Notes, Vol. 1469 As in the previous vC!lumes the central subject of -this volume is Banach space theory in its various aspects. In view of the spectacular development in infinite-dimensional Banach space theory in recent years (like the solution of the hyperplane problem, the unconditional basic sequence problem and the distortion problem in Hilbert space) it is quite natural that the present volume contains substantially more contributions in this direction than the previous volumes. This volume also contains many important contributions in the 'traditional directions' of this seminar such as probabilistic methods in functional analysis, non-linear theory, harmonic analysis and especially the local theory of Banach spaces and its connection to classical convexity theory in IRn. The papers in this volume are original research papers and include an invited survey by Alexander Olevskii of Kolmogorov's work on Fourier analysis (which was presented at a special meeting on the occasion of the 90th birthday of A. N. Kol mogorov). We are very grateful to Mrs. M. Hercberg for her generous help in many directions, which made the publication of this volume possible. At the same time several new issues in computer vision and image processing have been studied in depth. The understanding of many of these problems has made significant progress thanks to new methods developed in calculus of variations, geometric measure theory and partial differential equations. In particular, new technical tools have been introduced and successfully applied. For example, in order to describe the geometrical complexity of unknown patterns, a new class of problems in calculus of variations has been introduced together with a suitable functional setting: the free-discontinuity problems and the special BV and BH functions. The conference held at Villa Olmo on Lake Como in September 1994 spawned successful discussion of these topics among mathematicians, experts in computer science and material scientists. 196 pp. Englisch.

The proceedings of this meeting were subsequently published by Birkhauser Verlag as Transgenic Organisms: Risk Assessment of Deliberate Release (K. Wohrmann and J. Tomiuk). Since then we have gained many new insights that are also worthy of discussion. And although other equally important scientific views on the release of genetically modified organisms exist, we have mainly concentrated on aspects of population biology and evolution. The results of a second meeting in 1995 are summarized here. We are grateful to colleagues and friends for their help in the translation, correction and review of the authors' contributions. We especially want to thank Jutta Bachmann, Donna Devine, Diana von Finck, Friedrich Laplace, Volker Loeschcke, Rolf Lorenz, Dave Parker and Trevor Petney. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Incomplete second order linear differential equations in Banach spaces as well as first order equations have become a classical part of functional analysis. This monograph is an attempt to present a unified systematic theory of second order equations y' (t) + Ay' (t) + By (t) = 0 including well-posedness of the Cauchy problem as well as the Dirichlet and Neumann problems. Exhaustive yet clear answers to all posed questions are given. Special emphasis is placed on new surprising effects arising for complete second order equations which do not take place for first order and incomplete second order equations. For this purpose, some new results in the spectral theory of pairs of operators and the boundary behavior of integral transforms have been developed. The book serves as a self-contained introductory course and a reference book on this subject for undergraduate and post- graduate students and research mathematicians in analysis. Moreover, users will welcome having a comprehensive study of the equations at hand, and it gives insight into the theory of complete second order linear differential equations in a general context - a theory which is far from being fully understood. 220 pp. Englisch.
