The three famous chemists Perkin, Kipping and their collaborator Lapworth married three sisters: Mina, Lily, and Kathleen Holland. The three Holland sisters kept their husbands in close and very productive collaboration throughout their lives, thereby greatly increasing their scientific output. They functioned as a productive scientific family. However, the life and work of the men is thoroughly documented, but little is known about their wives. Professor Eugene G. Rochow, a world-renowned scientist, wrote this biographical historical novel with the help of a grandson, Dr. Brian Kipping. Professor Rochow did not intend to write a bare-bones biography. He took care to make the book factually accurate. Wherever there are no facts, he has not hesitated to flesh out the account with imagination and actual experience of others in order to make the text more readable.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 220 pp. Englisch.

This was the first of these schools to be held in Durharn, having previously been hosted, initially by the University of Lancaster and latterly by the University of Leicester. The purpose of the summer school was to present high quality in structional courses on topics at the forefront of numerical analysis research to postgraduate students. Eminent figures in numerical analysis presented lectures and provided high quality lecture notes. At the time of writing it is now more than two years since we first con tacted the guest speakers and during that period they have given significant portions of their time to making the summer school, and this volume, a suc cess. We would like to thank all six of them for the care which they took in the preparation and delivery of their lectures. The speakers were Christine Bernardi, Petter Bj0rstad, Carsten Carstensen, Peter Kloeden, Ralf Kornhu ber and Anders Szepessy. This volume presents written contributions from five of the six speakers. In all cases except one, these contributions are more comprehensive versions of the lecture not es which were distributed to participants during the meeting. Aggiungi al carrelloBuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware -The fascinating phenomenon ferromagnetism is far from being fully understood, although it surely belongs to the oldest problems of solid state physics. For any investigation it appears recommendable to distinguish between materials whose spontaneous magnetization stems from localized electrons of a partially lled atomic shell and those in which it is due to itinerant electrons of a partially lled conduction band. In the latter case one speaks of band-ferromagnetism, prototypes of which are the classical ferromagnets Fe, Co, and Ni. The present book is a status report on the remarkable progress that has recently been made towards a microscopic understanding of band-ferromagnetism as an electron c- relation e ect. The authors of the various chapters of this book ¿Band-Ferromagnetism: Ground-State and Finite-Temperature Phenomenä participated as selected - perts in the 242nd WE-Heraeus-Seminar (4-6 October 2000) held under almost the same title in Wandlitz near Berlin (Germany). It was the second seminar of this type in Wandlitz. (The rst in 1998 dealt with the complementary topic of the physics of local-moment ferromagnets such as Gd). Twenty-six invited spe- ers from ten di erent countries together with fty- ve further participants, who presented contributions in form of posters, spent three days together discussing in an enthusiastic and fertile manner the hot topics of band-ferromagnetism.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 408 pp. Englisch.

Aggiungi al carrelloBuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware -The question of the symbolic structure of physics is implicitly involved in any discussion about the character of physical knowledge and the development of physical theories. Actually many discussions would greatly profit from an explicit reference to and an investigation of this question, and much confusion may be avoided in this way. A book directly addressing the use and character of symbols in physics may help provide a point of view which is in the back ground of any consideration in the theory of knowledge and which is, to be sure, very relevant today, but - strangely enough - often seems to be missing as an explicit and central perspective in the present epistemological debates. The concept of symbol has different meanings. Its wide diffusion in various cultural fields such as religion, mythology, art, and psychoanalysis, constitutes the best proof of its semantic variety, but also of the danger of using it in too vague a way. We start here from the concept of symbol conceived in the general sense of a sign or a material medium which is able, on the one hand, to communicate mental or conceptual contents and, on the other hand, to des ignate things or situations in the world. In this way symbols make it possible for human knowledge to 'translate' the mental activity grasping the real ity in conceptual frames, formal or natural languages, scientific propositions, theories and so on.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 248 pp. Englisch.

CHARME 2001 is the 11th in a series of working conferences devoted to the development and use of leading-edge formal techniques and tools for the design and veri cation of hardware and hardware-like systems. Previous events in the ¿CHARME¿ series were held in Bad Herrenalb (1999), Montreal (1997), Frankfurt (1995), Arles (1993), and Torino (1991). This series of meetings has been organized in cooperation with IFIP WG 10.5 and WG 10.2. Prior meetings, stretching backto the earliest days of formal hardware veri cation, were held under various names in Miami (1990), Leuven (1989), Glasgow (1988), Grenoble (1986), Edinburgh (1985), and Darmstadt (1984). The convention is now well-established whereby the European CHARME conference alternates with its biennial counterpart, the International Conference on Formal Methods in Computer-Aided Design (FMCAD), which is held on even-numbered years in the USA. The conference tookplace during 4¿7 September 2001 at the Institute for System Level Integration in Livingston, Scotland. It was co-hosted by the - stitute and the Department of Computing Science of Glasgow University and co-sponsored by the IFIP TC10/WG10.5 Working Group on Design and En- neering of Electronic Systems. CHARME 2001 also included a scienti c session and social program held jointly with the 14th International Conference on Th- rem Proving in Higher Order Logics (TPHOLs), which was co-located in nearby Edinburgh. 496 pp. Englisch.

The book provides a detailed analysis of the economic effects which EU integration has on accession countries. It shows that these countries have already managed to fully remove the anti-trade bias with the EU that existed before the fall of the iron curtain. Benefits from further integration into the EU could result in particular from the fact that full membership in the European Community will increase the credibility of government policy in accession countries. The study explores in depth how these credibility effects can be quantified. The author develops a novel approach to model the transformation process within a dynamic computable general equilibrium framework. Furthermore, he estimates the potential income and welfare effects of EU integration for Poland, the largest transition country with EU candidate status.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 202 pp. Englisch.

The annual FPL event is the longest-standing international conference covering p- grammable logic, recon gurable computing, and related matters. It was founded in 1991,and has been held in Darmstadt,Glasgow,London,Oxford (thrice), Prague,Tallinn,Vienna, and Villach. FPL brings together experts, users, and newcomers from industry and academia,in an informal and convivial atmosphere that encourages stimulating and productive interaction between participants. The size of the FPL conference has been growing rapidly, the number of participants increasing from 144 in 1999 to 240 in 2000. The number of papers submitted in 2001 was in line with the previous year, and our goal for 2001 was to sustain the growth in participation. The 117 submitted papers came from 24 di erent countries: USA (26),UK (24),Germany (14),Spain (12),Japan (7),France (4),Greece and Ireland (3 each),Belgium,Canada,Czech Republic, Finland,Italy,The Netherlands,Poland, and Switzerland (2 each),and Austria, Belarus,Brazil,Iran,Mexico,Portugal,South Africa, and Sweden (1 each). This illustrates the position of FPL as a genuinely international event, with by far the largest number of submissions of any conference in this eld. As in previous years, each submitted paper was subjected to thorough reviewing. As a result, 56 regular papers and 15 posters were accepted for presentation. Another three keynote papers were invited. We thank all the authors who submitted papers, and also thank the members of the program committee and the additional referees who carefully reviewed the submissions. 686 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -This volume consists of the 42 papers presented at the International Workshop on Energy Minimization Methods in Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (EMMCVPR2001),whichwasheldatINRIA(InstitutNationaldeRechercheen Informatique et en Automatique) in Sophia Antipolis, France, from September 3 through September 5, 2001. This workshop is the third of a series, which was started with EMMCVPR¿97, held in Venice in May 1997, and continued with EMMCVR¿99, which took place in York, in July 1999. Minimization problems and optimization methods permeate computer vision (CV), pattern recognition (PR), and many other elds of machine intelligence. The aim of the EMMCVPR workshops is to bring together people with research interests in this interdisciplinary topic. Although the subject is traditionally well represented at major international conferences on CV and PR, the EMMCVPR workshops provide a forum where researchers can report their recent work and engage in more informal discussions. We received 70 submissions from 23 countries, which were reviewed by the members of the program committee. Based on the reviews, 24 papers were - cepted for oral presentation and 18 for poster presentation. In this volume, no distinction is made between papers that were presented orally or as posters. The book is organized into ve sections, whose topics coincide with the ve s- sionsoftheworkshop:¿ProbabilisticModelsandEstimation¿,¿Image Modelling and Synthesis¿, ¿Clustering, Grouping, and Segmentation¿, ¿Optimization and Graphs¿, and ¿Shapes, Curves, Surfaces, and Templates¿. 676 pp. Englisch.

Aggiungi al carrelloBuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware -This book springs from the programme Quantized Vortex Dynamics and Sup- uid Turbulence held at the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences (University of Cambridge) in August 2000. What motivated the programme was the recognition that two recent developments have moved the study of qu- tized vorticity, traditionally carried out within the low-temperature physics and condensed-matter physics communities, into a new era. The rst development is the increasing contact with classical uid dynamics and its ideas and methods. For example, some current experiments with - lium II now deal with very classical issues, such as the measurement of velocity spectra and turbulence decay rates. The evidence from these experiments and many others is that super uid turbulence and classical turbulence share many features. The challenge is now to explain these similarities and explore the time scales and length scales over which they hold true. The observed classical aspects have also attracted attention to the role played by the ow of the normal uid, which was somewhat neglected in the past because of the lack of direct ow visualization. Increased computing power is also making it possible to study the coupled motion of super uid vortices and normal uids. Another contact with classical physics arises through the interest in the study of super uid vortex - connections. Reconnections have been studied for some time in the contexts of classical uid dynamics and magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD), and it is useful to learn from the experience acquired in other elds.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 484 pp. Englisch.

Aggiungi al carrelloBuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware -Gamma-ray astronomy began in the mid-1960s with balloon satellite, and, at very high photon energies, also with ground-based instruments. However, the most significant progress was made in the last decade of the 20th century, when the tree satellite missions SIGMA, Compton, and Beppo-Sax gave a completely new picture of our Universe and made gamma-ray astronomy an integral part of astronomical research. This book, written by well-known experts, gives the first comprehensive presentation of this field of research, addressing both graduate students and researchers. Gamma-ray astronomy helps us to understand the most energetic processes and the most violent events in the Universe. After describing cosmic gamma-ray production and absorption, the instrumentation used in gamma-ray astronomy is explained. The main part of the book deals with astronomical results, including the somewhat surprising result that the gamma-ray sky is continuously changing.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 424 pp. Englisch.

This book gives a complete and up-to-date introduction to the theory and practice of the method. It reveals deficiencies of the original residual concept and discusses various measures of intergenerational redistribution based on the recent sustainability approach to generational accounting. An application using data on German public finances serves to provide an in-depth explanation and practical illustration of the technique. The study develops new procedures to evaluate the fiscal externalities of migration and the redistribution of net wealth among living generations resulting from Social Security reform. The book is an indispensable source of reference for analysts employing generational accounting and for those wishing to study intertemporal redistribution through fiscal policy.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 284 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -long to understand that the phenomena associated with the redistribution of interstitial atoms and structural vacancies in non stoichiometric compounds represent an excellent model of analogous phenomena arising in solid-state systems with mutual substitution of components. Therefore methods of analysis and description proposed and developed for nonstoichiometric compounds are applicable to a number of systems with substitutional disorder. In 1980, when we embarked on this work, ordering in nonstoichiometric compounds was assumed to be a rare and accidental effect, which hardly deserved close attention. Now many people understand that ordering represents a general regular phenomenon in all non stoichiometric compounds. Ordering effects, which were not even mentioned, or were referred to as something insignificant and negligible just 20 years ago, proved to be numerous and comparable in magnitude with the change of properties in the whole homogeneity interval of non stoichiometric compounds. Phase diagrams of binary systems of transition metals with carbon and nitrogen, which remained unchanged from the time they were plotted in 1950-60s and containing one or two nonstoichiometric compounds, were enriched with many ordered phases. Unfortunately, the accumulated experimental and theoretical knowledge has not so far been disseminated widely.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 628 pp. Englisch.
