The concept of 'algorithm' is central in computer science, and 'efficiency' is central in the world of money. I have organized the material in three volumes and nine chapters. In all three volumes we present and analyse many important efficient algorithms for the fundamental computa tional problems in the area. Efficiency is measured by the running time on a realistic model of a computing machine which we present in chapter I. Most of the algorithms presented are very recent inven tions; after all computer science is a very young field. There are hardly any theorems in this book which are older than 20 years and at least fifty percent of the material is younger than 10 years.

I began by developing a model of job search. But following my previous work on the distribution of earnings, the search theory took a different form from the standard literature. A number of open questions immediately became apparent, including the relation bet ween unemployment and inequality, the nature and costs of unemployment, and the role of choice. These quickly provided sufficient material for the monograph. I began work on the project in 1980 at Miami University of Ohio. In order to achieve the desired film, optimum deposition conditions have to be found by carrying out experiments in a trial-and error fashion with varying parameters. The data obtained on one growth apparatus are often not transferable to another. This is especially true for film deposition processes using a cold plasma because of our poor under standing of the mechanisms. Relatively precise studies have been carried out on the role that physical effects play in film formation such as sputter deposition. However, there are many open questions regarding processes that involve chemical reactions, for example, reactive sputter deposition or plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition. Much further research is re quired in order to understand the fundamental deposition processes. A sys tematic collection of basic data, some of which may be readily available in other branches of science, for example, reaction cross sections for gases with energetic electrons, is also required. The need for pfasma deposition techniques is felt strongly in industrial applications because these techniques are superior to traditional thin-film deposition techniques in many ways. In fact, plasma deposition techniques have developed rapidly in the semiconductor and electronics industries. Fields of possible application are still expanding. That the en terprise ultimately produced a less integrated and complete result than expected is due to several reasons. We started from the assumption that the dimensional adjectives constitute a sufficiently rich, but nevertheless limited domain of grammatical and concep tual structure which is fairly well understood and explored in relevant aspects. Consequently we expected that summarizing, integrating, and extending the nu merous results that were available should quickly lead to a more complete picture of the interaction of the components involved. However, even had the premise of this assumption been correct, the conclusion turned out to be wrong fairly early in the project. Subsequently he held various teaching and research appointments at the University of Umea in northern Sweden, where he also served as President of the Graduate School of Social Work and Public Administration in 1966-1967. In 1971 he was appointed Professor at Stockholm University, where he headed the Institute of Applied Psychology for over a decade. Since 1980 he has been at Stockholm University's Department of Psychology, and in 1987 he received a Professorship in Perception and Psychophysics. Over the last 20 years he has held several visiting appointments abroad, particularly in the USA, and has lectured at many universi ties both in and outside Europe. The word 'techniques' is used here as a term intermediate between 'methods' and 'recipes'. One often conceives some method of solution of a problem as a general mathematical tool, while not taking much care with its computa tional realization. On the other hand, the word 'recipes' may nowadays be understood in the sense of the well-known book Numerical Recipes (Press et al. , 1992), where it means both algorithms and their specific program realiza tion in Fortran, C or Pascal. Analytical recipes imply the use of some general or specialized computer algebra system (CAS). The number of different CAS currently employed in celestial mechanics is too large to specify just a few of the most preferable systems. Besides, it seems reasonable not to mix the essence of any algorithm with its particular program implementation. For these reasons, the analytical techniques of this book are to be regarded as algorithms to be implemented in different ways depending on the hardware and software available. The book was preceded by Analytical Algorithms of Celestial Mechanics by the same author, published in Russian in 1980.
