The knowledge of how they rotate is important in understanding the formation and evolution of stars and their structure. The closest star to our Earth, the Sun, is a good laboratory to study in detail the rotation of a G star and allows to test new ideas and develop new techniques to study stellar rotation. More or less massive, more or lessevolved objects, however, can have averydi erent rotation rate, structure and history. In recent years our understanding of the rotation of the Sun has greatly improved. The Sun has a well-known large-scale rotation, which can be m- sured thanks to visible features across the solar disk, such as sunspots, or via spectroscopy. In addition, several studies cast light on di erential rotation in the convective zone and on meridional circulation in the radiative zone of the Sun. Even the rotation of the core of the Sun can now be studied thanks to various methods, such as dynamics of the gravitational moments and of course, helioseismology, through g-modes analysis. Moreover, the magnetic eld is strongly linked to the matter motions in the solar plasma. The solar magnetic eld can be measured only at the surface or in theupperlayers.Itistheproductoftheinternaldynamoorofthelocaldynamos if they exist ¿ in any case magnetic eld and rotation cannot thus be separated.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 276 pp. Englisch.

Other important, and less controllable, factors include the complexity of m- ern networked software systems, the unpredictability of practical development lifecycles, the intertwining of and trade-o between functionality, security and other qualities, the di culty of dealing with human factors, and so forth. Over the last few years, an entire research domain has been building up around these problems. And although some battles have been won, the jury is still out on the nal verdict. Semantic Web technologies like RDF, OWL and other W3C standards aim to extend the Web¿s capability through increased availability of machine-processable information.Davies, Grobelnik and Mladenic have grouped contributions from renowned researchers into four parts: technology; integration aspects of knowledge management; knowledge discovery and human language technologies; and case studies. Together, they offer a concise vision of semantic knowledge management, ranging from knowledge acquisition to ontology management to knowledge integration, and their applications in domains such as telecommunications, social networks and legal information processing. This book is an excellent combination of fundamental research, tools and applications in Semantic Web technologies. In order for compounds to be studied¿be it as drugs, materials, or because of their physical properties¿ they have to be prepared, often in multistep synthetic sequences. Thus, the target compound is at the outset of synthesis planning. Synthesis involves creating the target compound from smaller, readily available building blocks. Immediately, questions arise: From which bui- ing blocks In which sequence By which reactions Nature creates many highly complex ¿natural products¿ via reaction cascades, in which an asso- ment of starting compounds present within the cell is transformed by speci c (for each target structure) combinations of modular enzymes in speci c - quences into the target compounds [1, 2]. To mimic this ef ciency is the dream of an ideal synthesis [2]. However, we are at present so far from - alising such a ¿one-pot¿ operation that actual synthesis has to be achieved via a sequence of individual discrete steps. Thus, we are left with the task of planning each synthesis individually in an optimal fashion. Synthesis planning must be conducted with regard for certain speci - tions, some of which are due to the structure of the target molecule, and some of which relate to external parameters such as costs, environmental compatibility, or novelty. We will not consider these external aspects in this context. Planning of a synthesis is based on a pool of information regarding chemical reactions that can be executed reliably and in high chemical yield.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 240 pp. Englisch.

While keeping to the spirit of the book I wrote originally, I have reorganised the chapters of Fokker-Planck equations and those on approximation methods, and introduced new material on the white noise limit of driven stochastic systems, and on applications and validity of simulation methods based on the Poisson representation. Further, in response to the revolution in financial markets following from the discovery by Fischer Black and Myron Scholes of a reliable option pricing formula, I have written a chapter on the application of stochastic methods to financial markets. In doing this, I have not restricted myself to the geometric Brownian motion model, but have also attempted to give some favour of the kinds of methods used to take account of the realities of financial markets. This means that I have also given a treatment of Levy processes and their applications to finance, since these are central to most current thinking. Since this book was written the rigorous mathematical formulation of stochastic processes has developed considerably, most particularly towards greater precision and generality, and this has been reflected in the way the subject is presented in modern applications, particularly in finance.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 468 pp. Englisch.

The new generation of robots is expected to safely and dependably co-habitat with humans in homes, workplaces, and c- munities, providing support in services, entertainment, education, healthcare, manufacturing, and assistance. Beyond its impact on physical robots, the body of knowledge robotics has produced is revealing a much wider rangeof applications reaching across diverse research areas and scienti c disciplines, such as: biomechanics, haptics, n- rosciences, virtual simulation, animation, surgery, and sensor networks among others. In return, the challenges of the new emerging areas are proving an ab- dant source of stimulation and insights for the eld of robotics. According to the taxonomy of Web mining, there are three sub-fields of Web-mining research: Web usage mining, Web content mining and Web structure mining. These three research fields cover most content and activities on the Web. With the rapid growth of the World Wide Web, Web mining has become a hot topic and is now part of the mainstream of Web - search, such as Web information systems and Web intelligence. Among all of the possible applications in Web research, e-commerce and e-services have been iden- fied as important domains for Web-mining techniques. Web-mining techniques also play an important role in e-commerce and e-services, proving to be useful tools for understanding how e-commerce and e-service Web sites and services are used, e- bling the provision of better services for customers and users. Aggiungi al carrelloBuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware -What is combinatorial optimization Traditionally, a problem is considered to be c- binatorial if its set of feasible solutions is both nite and discrete, i. e. , enumerable. For example, the traveling salesman problem asks in what order a salesman should visit the cities in his territory if he wants to minimize his total mileage (see Sect. 2. 2. 2). The traveling salesman problem¿s feasible solutions - permutations of city labels - c- prise a nite, discrete set. By contrast, Differential Evolution was originally designed to optimize functions de ned on real spaces. Unlike combinatorial problems, the set of feasible solutions for real parameter optimization is continuous. Although Differential Evolution operates internally with oating-point precision, it has been applied with success to many numerical optimization problems that have t- ditionally been classi ed as combinatorial because their feasible sets are discrete. For example, the knapsack problem¿s goal is to pack objects of differing weight and value so that the knapsack¿s total weight is less than a given maximum and the value of the items inside is maximized (see Sect. 2. 2. 1). The set of feasible solutions - vectors whose components are nonnegative integers - is both numerical and discrete. To handle such problems while retaining full precision, Differential Evolution copies oating-point - lutions to a temporary vector that, prior to being evaluated, is truncated to the nearest feasible solution, e. g. , by rounding the temporary parameters to the nearest nonnegative integer.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 232 pp. Englisch.

We begin with astroglia because of their known presence and significance in early embryonic stages. Some of Åström' s unpublished evidence is included in this section. After consideration of oligodendroglia, microglia and ependymal cells, we describe the development of Schwann cells, the glia found in the PNS. In general, morphological observations of developing mammalian nervous tissues (mostly rodent) are emphasized; we have also tried to include findings relevant to cytodifferentiation, interactions, functions and regulation of developing glia. They are among the waves naturally - served by people on the sea surface that represent an inseparable feature of the Ocean. Rogue waves appear from nowhere, cause danger, and disappear at once. They may occur on the surface of a relatively calm sea and not reach very high amplitudes, but still be fatal for ships and crew due to their unexpectedness and abnormal features. Seamen are known to be unsurpassed authors of exciting and horrifying stories about the sea and sea waves. This could explain why, despite the increasing number of documented cases, that sailors¿ observations of ¿walls of - ter¿ have been considered ctitious for a while. A prototypical example is Student's t-statistic introduced in 1908 by Gosset, whose portrait is on the front cover. In recent years there have been a number of important advances in the theory and applications of self-normalized processes. Some of these developments are closely linked to the study of central limit theorems, which imply that self-normalized processes are approximate pivots for statistical inference. The present volume covers recent developments in the area, including self-normalized large and moderate deviations, and laws of the iterated logarithms for self-normalized martingales. This is the first book that systematically treats the theory and applications of self-normalization.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 292 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Approximately 60% of all hospital-associated infections, over one million cases per year, are due to biofilms that have formed on indwelling medical devices. Device-related biofilm infections increase hospital stays and add over one billion dollars/year to U.S. hospitalization costs. Since the use and the types of indwelling medical devices commonly used in modern healthcare are continuously expanding, especially with an aging population, the incidence of biofilm infections will also continue to rise. The central problem with microbial biofilm infections of foreign bodies is their propensity to resist clearance by the host immune system and all antimicrobial agents tested to date. In fact, compared to their free floating, planktonic counterparts, microbes within a biofilm are 50 ¿ 500 times more resistant to antimicrobial agents. Therefore, achieving therapeutic and non-lethal dosing regimens within the human host is impossible. The end result is a conversion from an acute infection to one that is persistent, chronic, and recurrent, most often requiring device removal in order to eliminate the infection. This text will describe the major types of device-related infections, and will explain the host, pathogen, and the unique properties of their interactions in order to gain a better understanding of these recalcitrant infections.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 284 pp. Englisch.

Aggiungi al carrelloBuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware -The eld of applied nonlinear dynamics has attracted scientists and engineers across many different disciplines to develop innovative ideas and methods to study c- plex behavior exhibited by relatively simple systems. Examples include: population dynamics, uidization processes, applied optics, stochastic resonance, ocking and ightformations, lasers, andmechanicalandelectricaloscillators. Acommontheme among these and many other examples is the underlying universal laws of nonl- ear science that govern the behavior, in space and time, of a given system. These laws are universal in the sense that they transcend the model-speci c features of a system and so they can be readily applied to explain and predict the behavior of a wide ranging phenomena, natural and arti cial ones. Thus the emphasis in the past decades has been in explaining nonlinear phenomena with signi cantly less att- tion paid to exploiting the rich behavior of nonlinear systems to design and fabricate new devices that can operate more ef ciently. Recently, there has been a series of meetings on topics such as Experimental Chaos, Neural Coding, and Stochastic Resonance, which have brought together many researchers in the eld of nonlinear dynamics to discuss, mainly, theoretical ideas that may have the potential for further implementation. In contrast, the goal of the 2007 ICAND (International Conference on Applied Nonlinear Dynamics) was focused more sharply on the implementation of theoretical ideas into actual - vices and systems.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 492 pp. Englisch.

They are found in physiologically and phylogenetically diverse groups of bacteria and archaea. By definition, megaplasmids are not essential for the viability of their hosts under all growth conditions, but paradoxically many megaplasmids carry the genetic information for the defining and characteristic traits of the organism in which they reside.Microbial Megaplasmids reviews our knowledge of the extensively studied representatives, such as the catabolic plasmids of the pseudomonads, the rhizobial Sym plasmids, the Ti plasmids of the genus Agrobacterium and the giant enterobacterial virulence plasmids. It also presents snapshots of more recently discovered megaplasmids. The contribution of megaplasmids to the biology of their hosts is described, highlighting the interactions between megaplasmid and chromosomal genes.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 360 pp. Englisch.

This expansion has been brought about bythematurityofthe eldandtheadvancesinitsrelatedtechnologies. From a largely dominant industrial focus, robotics has been rapidly expanding into the challenges of the human world. The new generation of robots is expected to safely and dependably co-habitat with humans in homes, workplaces, and communities,providingsupportinservices,entertainment,education,heal- care, manufacturing, and assistance. Beyond its impact on physical robots, the body of knowledge robotics has produced is revealing a much wider range of applications reaching across - verse researchareas and scienti c disciplines, such as: biomechanics, haptics, neurosciences, virtual simulation, animation, surgery, and sensor networks among others. In return, the challenges of the new emerging areas are pr- ing an abundant source of stimulation and insights for the eld of robotics. It is indeed at the intersection of disciplines that the most striking advances happen. The goal of the series of Springer Tracts in Advanced Robotics (STAR) is to bring, in a timely fashion, the latest advances and developments in robotics on the basis of their signi cance and quality. It is our hope that the wider dissemination of research developments will stimulate more exchanges and collaborations among the research community and contribute to further advancement of this rapidly growing eld.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 228 pp. Englisch.

Wefocusouratt- tion both on the innovative concepts and implementations in order to model self-organizations, but also on the relevant applicative domains in which they can be used e ciently. First part deals with general modelling and methodology as conceptual - proaches for complex systems description. An introductive chapter by Michel Cotsaftis entitled ¿A Passage to Complex Systems¿, treats the notion of ¿Complex Systems¿ in opposition to that of a ¿Complicated System¿. This can be, he claims, comprehended immediately from the latin roots as ¿C- plex¿ comes from ¿cum plexus¿ (tied up with) whereas ¿complicated¿ ori- natesfrom¿cumpliare¿(piledupwith). Thepaperisawideandrichdisser- tion with elements of history (of the technical developement of mankind) with its recents steps : mechanist, quantum and relativistic points of view. Then, the need for a ¿passage¿ is illustrated by the discussion, with tools borrowed from functional analysis, of a typical parametric di erential system. The last and conclusive parts give tracks for the study of Complex Systems, in parti- lar one can hope to pass to quantitative study and control of complex systems even if one has to consent a ¿larger intelligence delegation¿ to them (as - nounced in the introduction) by using and developing tools already present in dissipative Physics and in Mathematical functional analysis and xed point theorems, for instance. This ¿passage¿ is followed by a wide bibliography of more than 90 entries. Neuware -The tremendous growth in the availability of inexpensive computing power and easy availability of computers have generated tremendous interest in the design and imp- mentation of Complex Systems. Computer-based solutions offer great support in the design of Complex Systems. Furthermore, Complex Systems are becoming incre- ingly complex themselves. This research book comprises a selection of state-of-the-art contributions to topics dealing with Complex Systems in a Knowledge-based En- ronment. Complex systems are ubiquitous. Examples comprise, but are not limited to System of Systems, Service-oriented Approaches, Agent-based Systems, and Complex Distributed Virtual Systems. These are application domains that require knowledge of engineering and management methods and are beyond the scope of traditional systems. The chapters in this book deal with a selection of topics which range from unc- tainty representation, management and the use of ontological means which support and are large-scale business integration. All contributions were invited and are based on the recognition of the expertise of the contributing authors in the field. By colle- ing these sources together in one volume, the intention was to present a variety of tools to the reader to assist in both study and work. The second intention was to show how the different facets presented in the chapters are complementary and contribute towards this emerging discipline designed to aid in the analysis of complex systems.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 284 pp. Englisch.
