It meant: 'Ifsomething should, against all odds, func tion properly, then do not touch it, you might make things worse!' But then, the re-engineering fashion emerged, and somebody whom I used to deeply admire as one of the most brilliant teachers I ever saw at work, when he was still an Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering at the Massachusetts In stitute of Technology (MIT), coined the phrase:'Ifit is not broken: break it!' Now that is obvious non-sense on a logical level, but is it on a social level Society, and thus business, is driven by fashions. Some of us call it fads. There have been more of those than I care to list here. The more colorful, the moreattention it gets.Attention translates more exuberant the statement, the into book salesand lecture fees. But it does not stop there.Very obviously, the more you pay for a speaker, the higher the distribution numbers for his book, the 'truer' his message must be! Wewill revisit the 'strange loops' caused by recursion often in this book. Let's start with one example. Did I pay a lot for this lecture because it is good, or is it good because it is expensive One can very easily see a mechanism here that will make us gravitate towards ever louder and shallower truths.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 300 pp. Englisch.

My recent books, Capital and Knowledge (Zhang, 1999) and A TheoryofInternational Trade (Zhang, 2000) show how separate economic theories such as the Marxian economics, the Keynesian economics, the general equilibrium theory, the neoclassical growth theory, and the neoclassical trade theory can be examined within a single theoretical framework. This book isto further expand the frameworkproposed in the previous studies. This book is a part of my economic theory with endogenous population, capital, knowledge, preferences, sexual division of labor and consumption, institutions, economic structures and exchange values over time and space (Zhang, 1996a). As an extension of the Capital and Knowledge, which is focused on the dynamics of national economies, this book is to construct a theory of urban economies. We are concerned with dynamic relations between division of labor, division ofconsumption and determination of prices structure over space. We examine dynamic interdependence between capital accumulation, knowledge creation and utilization, economicgrowth, price structuresand urban pattern formation under free competition. The theory is constructed on the basisofa few concepts within a compact framework. The comparative advantage of our theory is that in providing rich insights into complex of spatial economies it uses only a few concepts and simplified functional forms and accepts a few assumptions about behavior of consumers, producers, and institutionalstructures.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 244 pp. Englisch.

Starting with Asiacrypt 2000, the conference is now one of three annual conferences organized by the Inter- tional Association for Cryptologic Research (IACR). The continuing success of Asiacrypt is in no small part due to the e orts of the Asiacrypt Steering C- mittee (ASC) and the strong support of the IACR Board of Directors. There were 153 papers submitted to Asiacrypt 2001 and 33 of these were accepted for inclusion in these proceedings. The authors of every paper, whether accepted or not, made a valued contribution to the success of the conference. Sending out rejection noti cations to so many hard working authors is one of the most unpleasant tasks of the Program Chair. The review process lasted some 10 weeks and consisted of an initial refe- eing phase followed by an extensive discussion period. My heartfelt thanks go to all members of the Program Committee who put in extreme amounts of time to give their expert analysis and opinions on the submissions. All papers were reviewed by at least three committee members; in many cases, particularly for those papers submitted by committee members, additional reviews were obt- ned. Specialist reviews were provided by an army of external reviewers without whom our decisions would have been much more di cult. 616 pp. Englisch.

Camion, organized the rst conference. Originally the acronym AAECC meant ¿Applied Algebra and Error-Correcting Codes¿. Over the years its meaning has shifted to ¿Applied Algebra, Algebraic Algorithms, and Error-Correcting Codes¿, re ecting the growing importance of complexity in both decoding algorithms and computational algebra. AAECC aims to encourage cross-fertilization between algebraic methods and their applications in computing and communications. The algebraic orientation is towards nite elds, complexity, polynomials, and graphs. The applications orientation is towards both theoretical and practical error-correction coding, and, since AAECC 13 (Hawaii, 1999), towards cryptography. AAECC was the rst symposium with papers connecting Gr¿obner bases with E-C codes. The balance between theoretical and practical is intended to shift regularly; at AAECC-14 the focus was on the theoretical side. The main subjects covered were: ¿ Codes: iterative decoding, decoding methods, block codes, code construction. ¿ Codes and algebra: algebraic curves, Gr¿obner bases, and AG codes. ¿ Algebra: rings and elds, polynomials. ¿ Codes and combinatorics: graphs and matrices, designs, arithmetic. ¿ Cryptography. ¿ Computational algebra: algebraic algorithms. ¿ Sequences for communications.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 416 pp. Englisch.

This was the 28th annual conference in the SOFSEM series organized either in the Slovak or the Czech Republic. SOFSEM has a well-established tradition. Currently it is a broad, multid- ciplinary conference, devoted to the theory and practice of software systems. Its aim is to foster cooperation among professionals from academia and industry working in various areas of informatics. The scienti c program of SOFSEM consists of invited talks, which determine the topics of the conference, and short contributed talks presenting original - sults. The topics of the invited talks are chosen so as to cover the whole range from theory to practice and to bring interesting research areas to the attention of conference participants. For the year 2001, the following three directions were chosen for presentation by the SOFSEM Steering Committee: ¿ Trends in Informatics ¿ Enabling Technologies for Global Computing ¿ Practical Systems Engineering and Applications The above directions were covered through 12 invited talks presented by pro- nent researchers. There were 18 contributed talks, selected by the international Program Committee from among 46 submitted papers. The conference was also accompanied by workshops on Electronic Commerce Systems (coordinated by H. D. Zimmermann) and Soft Computing (coordinated by P. Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware -The term 'grid computing' is based on an analogy with the electrical power grid: computing capabilities should be ubiquitous and easy to use. While the development of what we now call grid computing is, in many ways, part of a natural progression of work done in the last decade, what's special about it is that all of its enabling technologies are converging at once: (1) a widely - ployed, network infrastructure will connect virtually every device in the world, (2) an interface technology is widely understood and embraced by virtually every segment of science, technology, commerce, and society, and (3) there is a wi- spread, and growing, understanding of the properties, capabilities, and services that are necessary and possible to utilize this infrastructure. Information services and resource brokers will allow the dynamic sharing of resources for applications large and small and enable virtual organizations. These properties, capabilities, and services will be used in different contexts to enable different styles of c- puting such as Internet computing and Peer-to-Peer computing. To facilitate the adoption of standard practices, the Global Grid Forum ( gridforum. org) was formed to identify common requirements and push for eventual standardization. The phenomenal growth of grid computing and related topics has created the need for this workshop as a venue to present the latest research. This year's workshop builds on the success of last year's.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 204 pp. Englisch.

On the one hand, it is changing qualitatively since new experim- tal developments allow us to direct radioactive and other exotic probes to target nuclei as well as to sparko extremely energetic nuclear collisions. In parallel, detector systems are of an impressive sophistication. It is di cult to envisage all the discoveries that will be made in the near future. On the other hand, the app- cations of nuclear science and technology are broadening the limits in medicine, industry, art, archaeology, and the environmental sciences, etc. This implies that the public perception of our eld is changing, smoothly but drastically, in c- trast to former times where nuclear weapons and nuclear power plants were the dominant applications perceived by citizens. Both aspects, scienti c dynamism and popular recognition, should lead the eld to an unexpected revival. One of the consequences of the former could be that many brilliant students consider nuclear physics as an excellent eld in which to acquire professional expertise. Therefore, one of the challenges of the international nuclear physics community is to try to make the eld attractive. That means simply being pedagogic and enthusiastic. Thus, as organisers of an already established summer school, our contribution was to put an emphasis in this session on pedagogy and enthusiasm.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 364 pp. Englisch.

It is absolutely unexpected and surprising, whether one studies equilibrium statistical me chanics, or quantum field theory, or solid state physics, or celestial mechanics, harmonic analysis, elasticity, general relativity or fluid mechanics and chaos in turbulence. So when in 1988 I was made chair of Fluid Mechanics at the Universita La Sapienza, not out of recognition of work I did on the subject (there was none) but, rather, to avoid my teaching mechanics, from which I could have a strong cultural influence on mathematical physics in Rome, I was not excessively worried, although I was clearly in the wrong place. The subject is wide, hence in the last decade I could do nothing else but go through books and libraries looking for something that was within the range of the methods and experiences of my past work. The first great surprise was to realize that the mathematical theory of fluids is in an even more primitive state than I was aware of. Nevertheless it still seems to me that a detailed analysis of the mathematical problems is essential for anyone who wishes to do research into fluids. Therefore, I dedicated (Chap. 3) all the space necessary to a complete exposition of the theories of Leray, of Scheffer and of Caffarelli, Kohn and Nirenberg, taken directly from the original works.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 548 pp. Englisch.

Although discovery is naturally ubiquitous in s- ence, and scientific discovery itself has been subject to scientific investigation for centuries, the term Discovery Science is comparably new. It came up in conn- tion with the Japanese Discovery Science project (cf. Arikawa's invited lecture on The Discovery Science Project in Japan in the present volume) some time during the last few years. Setsuo Arikawa is the father in spirit of the Discovery Science conference series. He led the above mentioned project, and he is currently serving as the chairman of the international steering committee for the Discovery Science c- ference series. The other members of this board are currently (in alphabetical order) Klaus P. Jantke, Masahiko Sato, Ayumi Shinohara, Carl H. Smith, and Thomas Zeugmann. Colleagues and friends from all over the world took the opportunity of me- ing for this conference to celebrate Arikawa's 60th birthday and to pay tribute to his manifold contributions to science, in general, and to Learning Theory and Discovery Science, in particular. Algorithmic Learning Theory (ALT, for short) is another conference series initiated by Setsuo Arikawa in Japan in 1990. In 1994, it amalgamated with the conference series on Analogical and Inductive Inference (AII), when ALT was held outside of Japan for the first time.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 512 pp. Englisch.

However,it has become increasingly obvious in recent years that this area is now an indispensable, even unavoidable, language and provides a fundamental methodology for modern probability theory, stochas tic analysis and their applications, especially in financial mathematics. Our aim in writing this book is to provide a smooth and fast introduction to the language and basic results ofmodern probability theory and stochastic differential equations with help ofthe computer manipulator software package MAPLE. It is intended for advanced undergraduate students or graduates, not necessarily in mathematics, to provide an overviewand intuitive background for more advanced studies as wellas somepractical skillsin the use of MAPLE software in the context of probability and its applications. This book is not a conventional mathematics book. Like such books it provides precise definitions and mathematical statements, particularly those based on measure and integration theory, but instead ofmathematical proofs it uses numerous MAPLE experiments and examples to help the reader un derstand intuitively the ideas under discussion. The pace increases from ex tensive and detailed explanations in the first chapters to a more advanced presentation in the latter part of the book. The MAPLE is handled in a sim ilar way, at first with simple commands, then some simple procedures are gardually developed and, finally, the stochastic package is introduced.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 332 pp. Englisch.

Condizione: Neu. Neuware -The wntmgs by Japanese and Gennan economists presented here originated against the backdrop of ongoing globalization processes and notable fluctuations in regional economic dynamics observable at the same time, primarily in the East and South East Asian area. They provided the occasion for these writers to come to tenns with globalization processes, and in particular with the stabilizing and destabilizing elements at work in them. This is the basis for their investigation of the options provided by economics and economic policy for stabilizing an ever more tightly interwoven world economy. The regional focal points of the contributions are the East Asian realm and the European Union, and the points of view are in every case both from the Japanese and the Gennan side. Questions of international competition and mechanisms of the spread of the crisis in the wake of globalization processes lie at the centre of the analyses by Hisashi Watanabe and Willy Kraus. Hisashi Watanabe focusses on the relationship, an especially important one from the Japanese perspective, between Japan and South Korea and takes up the problem of South Korea's demand that Japan should energetically promote its own transition to a service-sector-oriented society and withdraw from certain areas of manufacturing. This, it is argued, will grant Japan's Asian neighbours better chances for development and make a positive contribution to the economic stabilization of the region.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 268 pp. Englisch.

With the help of new spectroscopic methods it is now possible to study the structure and function of such systems under extreme pressures and temperatures. This book described the resulting theory and applications of these pressure and temperature effects. The subjects covered include the use of high pressure in food processing and even the theory of the origin and evolution of life. Readers exploring the world of biology in extreme environments will find this book particularly useful. 296 pp. Englisch.

Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware -The concept of CAST as Computer Aided Systems Theory, was introduced by F. Pichler in the late 1980s to include those computer theoretical and practical developments as tools to solve problems in System Science. It was considered as the third component (the other two being CAD and CAM) necessary to build the path from Computer and Systems Sciences to practical developments in Science and Engineering. The University of Linz organized the first CAST workshop in April 1988, which demonstrated the acceptance of the concepts by the scientific and technical community. Next, the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria joined the University of Linz to organize the first international meeting on CAST, (Las Palmas, February 1989), under the name EUROCAST¿89. This was a very successful gathering of systems theorists, computer scientists, and engineers from most European countries, North America, and Japan. It was agreed that EUROCAST international conferences would be organized every two years, alternating between Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and a continental European location. Thus, successive EUROCAST meetings have taken place in Krems (1991), Las Palmas (1993), Innsbruck (1995), Las Palmas (1997), and Vienna (1999), in addition to an extra-European CAST Conference in Ottawa in 1994.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 688 pp. Englisch.

Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware -The first international symposium on mathematical foundations of the finite element method was held at the University of Maryland in 1973. During the last three decades there has been great progress in the theory and practice of solving partial differential equations, and research has extended in various directions. Full-scale nonlinear problems have come within the range of nu merical simulation. The importance of mathematical modeling and analysis in science and engineering is steadily increasing. In addition, new possibili ties of analysing the reliability of computations have appeared. Many other developments have occurred: these are only the most noteworthy. This book is the record of the proceedings of the International Sympo sium on Mathematical Modeling and Numerical Simulation in Continuum Mechanics, held in Yamaguchi, Japan from 29 September to 3 October 2000. The topics covered by the symposium ranged from solids to fluids, and in cluded both mathematical and computational analysis of phenomena and algorithms. Twenty-one invited talks were delivered at the symposium. This volume includes almost all of them, and expresses aspects of the progress mentioned above. All the papers were individually refereed. We hope that this volume will be a stepping-stone for further developments in this field.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 316 pp. Englisch.

Aggiungi al carrelloBuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware -Solving efficiently the wave equations involved in modeling acoustic, elastic or electromagnetic wave propagation remains a challenge both for research and industry. To attack the problems coming from the propagative character of the solution, the author constructs higher-order numerical methods to reduce the size of the meshes, and consequently the time and space stepping, dramatically improving storage and computing times. This book surveys higher-order finite difference methods and develops various mass-lumped finite (also called spectral) element methods for the transient wave equations, and presents the most efficient methods, respecting both accuracy and stability for each sort of problem. A central role is played by the notion of the dispersion relation for analyzing the methods. The last chapter is devoted to unbounded domains which are modeled using perfectly matched layer (PML) techniques. Numerical examples are given.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 372 pp. Englisch.

Aggiungi al carrelloBuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware -Classical boundary integral equations arising from the potential theory and acoustics (Laplace and Helmholtz equations) are derived. Using the parametrization of the boundary these equations take a form of periodic pseudodifferential equations. A general theory of periodic pseudodifferential equations and methods of solving are developed, including trigonometric Galerkin and collocation methods, their fully discrete versions with fast solvers, quadrature and spline based methods. The theory of periodic pseudodifferential operators is presented in details, with preliminaries (Fredholm operators, periodic distributions, periodic Sobolev spaces) and full proofs. This self-contained monograph can be used as a textbook by graduate/postgraduate students. It also contains a lot of carefully chosen exercises.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 468 pp. Englisch.

Aggiungi al carrelloBuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware -This book grew out of a course which I gave during the winter term 1997/98 at the Universitat Munster. The course covered the material which here is presented in the first three chapters. The fourth more advanced chapter was added to give the reader a rather complete tour through all the important aspects of the theory of locally convex vector spaces over nonarchimedean fields. There is one serious restriction, though, which seemed inevitable to me in the interest of a clear presentation. In its deeper aspects the theory depends very much on the field being spherically complete or not. To give a drastic example, if the field is not spherically complete then there exist nonzero locally convex vector spaces which do not have a single nonzero continuous linear form. Although much progress has been made to overcome this problem a really nice and complete theory which to a large extent is analogous to classical functional analysis can only exist over spherically complete field8. I therefore allowed myself to restrict to this case whenever a conceptual clarity resulted. Although I hope that thi8 text will also be useful to the experts as a reference my own motivation for giving that course and writing this book was different. I had the reader in mind who wants to use locally convex vector spaces in the applications and needs a text to quickly gra8p this theory.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 172 pp. Englisch.

Born during the gravitational collapse of luminous stars - a birth heralded by spectacular supernova explosions - they open a window on a world where the state of the matter and the strengths of the fields are anything but ordinary. This book is a collection of pedagogical lectures on the theory of neutron stars, and especially their interiors, at the forefront of current research. It addresses graduate students and researchers alike, and should be particularly suitable as a text bridging the gap between standard textbook material and the research literature.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 532 pp. Englisch.
