This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Ever since the first volume appeared in 1969, this series has received good reviews in a variety of periodicals published in different corners of 'the world. It would seem that the work has fulfilled its purpose as outlined in the Preface to Volume 1. The rapidly increasing interest in surface and colloid science by people engaged in industrial research and development, and in environmental, ecological, medical, pharmaceutical, and other areas, justifies the continuation of such an effort. After nine volumes with John Wiley and Sons, this and subsequent volumes will-by mutual consent-be published by Plenum Press. The editor will do his best to maintain and, if possible, improve the quality of the contributions. While the fundamental philosophy will be preserved, some moderate graphical changes have taken place. These changes were done to enhance the readability and uniformity of the volumes. Occasionally, volumes may appear under the editorship of other scientists in the field. These volumes will be mainly devoted to techniques in surface and colloid science. For reasons of continuity a sequential numbering system will be used. 324 pp. Englisch.

The analytical chemist is under constant pressure not only from the research chemist whose sampIes he must characterize and control, but also from an ever-increasing group of governmental agencies stimulated by public concern over health and environmental problems, to determine the most sophisticated kinds of compounds as lower and lower levels. The subjects covered in these papers are wide-ranging, from the analysis of incinerator effluents to the determination of drugs in blood, but through them runs a common theme, the appli cation of the latest instrumental techniques to the problems of analysis. The authors show how successful they have been in rising to the analytical challenges pre sented by an increasingly complex world. The editors take this opportunity to thank them for their efforts in producing such excellent papers for publication in so short a time. Dur special appreciation goes to Dr. M. W. Miller, who acted as program chairman, and his team of session chairmen: P. R. Brown, L. J. Cline Love, C. Horvath, J. R. Lindsay, and T. C. Rains. 348 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The field of bacterial genetics has been restricted for many years to Escherichia coli and a few other genera of aerobic or facultatively anaerobic bacteria such as Pseudomonas, Bacillus, and Salmonella. The prevailing view up to recent times has been that anaerobic bacteria are interesting organisms but nothing is known about their genetics. To most microbiologists, anaerobic bacteria appeared as a sort of distant domain, reserved for occasional intrusions by taxonomists and medical microbiologists. By the mid-1970s, knowledge of the genetics and molecular biology of anaerobes began to emerge, and then developed rapidly. but also im This was the result of advances in molecular biology techniques, portantly because of improvements in basic techniques for culturing anaerobes and for understanding their biochemistry and other areas of in terest. Investigations in this field were also stimulated by a renewal of interest in their ecology, their role in pathology and in biotransformations, and in the search for alternative renewable sources of energy. The initial idea for this book came from Thomas D. Brock. When Dr. Brock requested my opinion about two years ago on the feasibility of publishing a book on the genetics of anaerobic bacteria, as a part of the Brock/Springer Series in Contemporary Bioscience, I answered positively but I was apprehen sive about assuming the role of editor. However, I was soon reassured by the enthusiastic commitment of those I approached to contribute. Eventually, thanks to the caring cooperation of the contributors, the task became relatively easy. 732 pp. Englisch.

For example, as a result of effective cardiac surgery in childhood, congential heart disease is now found with increasing frequency in adults and not exceptionally in persons over 65 years of age. The frequency of aortic valve replacement for calcific congenital valve stenosis in subjects around 70 years of age illustrates the intrusion of congenital heart disease into the older age range. Thus, the publica tion of Cardiology in Old Age will be especially welcome at this time. The Editors have assembled a formidable galaxy of experts to present the special problems of epidemiology, pathology, cardiovascu lar physiology and function, and of specific cardiac disorders in the elderly. The chapter on cardiac surgery is particularly appropriate to many current problems. The whole subject must be of growing concern to all clinicians and health workers who have increasingly to deal with older patients who have cardiovascular disorders. Knowledge of the effects of aging on the cardiovascular system is therefore of great interest and the information given in this book undoubtedly will be of value to general physicians and cardiologists, who may be expected in the future to work more closely with geriatricians in the care of the elderly. Continuing research into the problems of aging is clearly also of great importance especially in the field of cardiovascular medicine. 432 pp. Englisch.

Coupled with speculation about the magnitude and extent of the problem is discussion of needs for predictive testing and regulatory control measures. The first international seminar on the immunological system as a target for toxic damage was held in Luxembourg in 1984. It was organized by the International Programme on Chemical Safety (United Nations Environment Programme-International Labour Office World Health Organization) and the Commission of the European Communities with the support of the US Environmental Protection Agency and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (USA) and the participation of the International Society of Immunopharmacology. In view of the perceived importance of imrnunotoxicity, it was considered necessary to organize a follow-up meeting. Thus, an international workshop on the immunotoxicity of metals and immuno toxicology was held in Hanover, Federal Republic of Germany, on 6-10 November 1989. 332 pp. Englisch.

The study of ion chan nels has now reached a stage at which a quantum jump in progress is antici pated. There are many good reasons for this. Patch clamp techniques origi nally developed by Neher and Sakmann 12 years ago have made it possible to study the function of ion channels in a variety of cells. Membrane ionic currents can now be recorded practically from many types of cells using the whole-cell patch clamp technique. The opening and closing of individual ion channels can be analyzed using the single-channel patch clamp method. Techniques have also been developed to incorporate purified ion channels into lipid bilayers to reconstitute an 'excitable membrane. ' Advanced tech niques developed in molecular biology, genetics, and immunology, such as gene cloning and the use of monoclonal antibodies, are now being applied to the study of ion channels. A variety of drugs have now been found or are suspected to interact with ion channels to exert therapeutic effects. In addition to the classical exam ples, as represented by local anesthetics, many other drugs, including cal cium antagonists, psychoactive drugs, cardiac drugs, and anticonvulsants, shown to alter ion channel function. For certain pesticides such as have been pyrethroids and DDT, sodium channels are clearly the major target site. 352 pp. Englisch.

The subject of the Fourth Course, which was co-sponsored by national and international agencies, was 'Structure and Function of the Genetic 'Appara tus. ' Participants from 15 countries around the world attended the course. The study of the genetic apparatus is one of humanity's most challeng ing problems, and it has been approached in the tradition of the School from many different points of view, among them biochemistry, genetic eng ineering, cell biology, oncology, biophysics and other fields. It has been most difficult to confine such diverse points of view, as well as their pro ponents, within the four walls of one room, in front of one audience - es pecially since the heterogeneity of background and the inherent difficul ties encountered in communication could overshadow the true spirit of sci entific exchange. We are once again pleased to say the outcome of the 1983 Course has matched the success of the previous course held in Erice on the same subject five years ago. This book is the result of the 1983 Advanced Study Institute, and aims to present a cohesive, interdisciplinary view of the current knowledge on the structure and fuction of the genetic apparatus. 236 pp. Englisch.

Its members span virtually all disciplines, extending from various branches of clinical medicine such as anesthesiology, ophthalmology and surgery through the basic medical sciences of physiology and'biochemistry to most branches of the physical sciences and engineering. The seventeenth annual meeting of ISOTT was held in 1989 for four days, from July 21 to 24, at the Max Planck Institute for Experimental Medicine and the adjoining University Hospital (Klinikum), in Goettingen, Federal Republic of Germany. It attracted 147 active registrants and approximately 40 accompanying persons. The very successful format originated by Dr. Ian Longmuir in 1985, consisting of posters accompanied by an abbreviated oral summary, was continued with slight modification. Virtually all of the presentations utilized this format, with each poster session preceded by a formal discussion during which the presenter briefly reviewed the poster aided by a few slides. All posters remained in place for the entire four days of the meeting. 960 pp. Englisch.

New specialties and 'sub-specialization' are occurring at approximately an equal rate. Historically, established journals have not been able either to absorb this increase in publishable material or to extend their readership to the new specialists. International and national meetings, symposia and seminars, workshops and newsletters, successfully bring to the attention of physi cians within developing specialties what is occurring, but generally only in demonstration form without providing historical perspective, patho anatomical correlates, or extensive discussion. Page and time limitations oblige the authors to present only the essence of their material. Pediatric neurosurgery is an example of a specialty that has developed during the past 15 years and over this period, neurosurgeons have ob tained special training in pediatric neurosurgery and then dedicated them selves primarily to its practice. Centers, Chairs, and educational pro grams have been established as groups of neurosurgeons in different countries throughout the world organized themselves respectively into national and international societies for pediatric neurosurgery. These events were both preceded and followed by specialized courses, national and international journals, and ever-increasing clinical and investigative studies into all aspects of surgically treatable diseases of the child's ner vous system. 308 pp. Englisch.

We hope that the book will be interesting and useful to students of the biological sciences and medicine, and to those in the teaching professions who do not have ready access to research papers. Since space is at a premium, we have denied ourselves the luxury of a philosophical discussion of the problems of defining organelles. Rather we have chosen to include all those intracellular structures which have limiting membranes and definable compartments. The separate chapters consider nuclei, plastids, mitochondria, microbodies, endoplasmic and sarcoplasmic reticulum; Golgi bodies, lysosomes and various secretory vesicles, including chromaffin granules and synaptic vesicles. Nucleoli, ribosomes, and centrioles are included in the chapter on nuclei. New and exciting informatioIi about all these structures has emerged in recent years-for example; the nUcleosome, interrupted genes, signal sequences on proteins destined. for the bioenergetic organelles, mapping and sequencing of organelle genes, and consolidation of chemiosmosis as a unifying principle in energy transduction. We have outlined as many of these developments as possible and pointed out some areas of controversy. The literature on subcellular biology is so extensive that it would have been easier to have written a separate book on each organelle. 188 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -We try in this book to provide a detailed but readable, technical but accessible monograph on energy in the United States. We treat energy as a multidisciplinary challenge and apply the standard tools of economists, physicists, engineers, policy analysts, and, some might claim, fortune tellers. We hope that it will be used in classrooms of various types, and read by the general reader as well. That increased energy efficiency should be the first priority of energy policymakers is a conclusion, not an assumption, of our analysis. Many analysts have arrived at this conclusion while working separately on energy supply problems. The magnitude and scope of supply problems, primarily problems of high prices and environmental costs, lead one inexorably back to reducing demand growth as the first, most important step in any plausible energy future. We examine, in some depth, why much of the past literature on energy still points, fallaciously in our opinion, to high energy c- v Preface vi sumption futures. This is in Part I (called 'A Short History of the Future'). We devote one-third of the book (Part II) to energy resources, their internal and external costs, and the quantities of energy to be derived from these resources. This analysis provides a context within which the economic and social value of energy conservation options can be assessed. 276 pp. Englisch.

This has brought the concept of neurohormonal control of adenohypophyseal function into precise biochemical and chemical terms. The relative ease of synthesis of TRH (thyrotropin-releasing hormone), LH-RH (luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone), somatostatin and their analogues has opened a new era in the field of endocri nology and has led to a rapid expansion of our knowl- ge of the control of anterior pituitary function. The rapid evolution of fundamental and clinical research on hypothalamic hormones and the many potential clinical applications indicate the importance of inte grating the knowledge gained in recent years. Recent advances in our understanding of the functional role of dopamine, its mechanism of action and the pharmacology of dopaminergic agents have occurred on a broad front. The last few years have witnessed significant progress in the identification and classification of central and peripheral dopamine receptors and the factors that affect their responsiveness to inhibitory and stimulatory ligands. These advances have been paralleled by new insights into the contribution of alterations in dopaminergic reg ulation in causing disease and the utility of dopamine agonists and an tagonists as therapeutic modalities. This volume, the first in a series of publications arising from the annual Smith Kline and French Research Symposium on New Horizons in Therapeutics, provides a comprehensive survey of current research on peripheral dopamine receptors and the physiologic and therapeutic con sequences of stimulating pre-and postsynaptic dopamine receptors. There are two major reasons. First, there are several possible applications of most building materials; and there is an even larger number of different problems that can occur after products are installed in a building. Thus, it is difficult to produce recommendations that cover every eventuality. Second, it is not always in a building construction product producer's best interest to publish data that will help building owners repair their product. Producers, whose income derives from selling new products, do not necessarily applaud when their associations spend their money telling architects and building owners how to avoid buying their products. Finally, in the Building Renovation and Restoration Series we have a reference that recognizes that problems frequently occur with materials used in building projects. In this book and in the other books in this series, xv xvi Series Foreword Simmons goes beyond the promotional hyperbole found in most product literature and explains how to identify common problems. He then offers informed 'inside' recommendations on how to deal with each of the problems. Each chapter covers certain materials, or family of materials, in a way that can be understood by building owners and managers, as well as construction and design professionals. 436 pp. Englisch.

Despite much propaganda to the contrary, there can never be any serious question that pest-control chemicals and food-additive chemicals are essential to adequate food production, manufacture, marketing, and storage, yet without continuing surveillance and intelligent control some of those that persist in our foodstuffs could at times conceivably endanger the public health. Ensuring safety-in-use of these many chemicals is a dynamic challenge, for established ones are continually being dis placed by newly developed ones more acceptable to food tech nologists, pharmacologists, toxicologists, and changing pest-control requirements in progressive food-producing economies. These matters are of genuine concern to increasing numbers of governmental agencies and legislative bodies around the world, for some of these chemicals have resulted in a few mishaps from improper use. Adequate safety-in-use evaluations of any of these chemicals per sisting into our foodstuffs are not simple matters, and they incorporate the considered judgments of many individuals highly trained in a variety of complex biologrcal, chemical, food technological, medical, pharmacological, and toxicological disciplines. 156 pp. Englisch.

BARUCH AND JEANNE BROOKS-GUNN To describe the middle years-that relatively long span when one is neither young nor old-as a neglected period may no longer be accurate, given current scientific and popular interest in adult development and aging. But midlife is still too often seen merely as a kind of staging area on the way to old age, when one gathers one's forces and tries to stock up on assets-health, money, relationships-that will be needed for the rigors of the last phase of life. The middle years have been characterized more as a transition period than as a time of growth, satisfaction, and creativity. As this volume will show, although midlife is not without its difficulties, it is, for many women, a time of unexpected pleasure, even power. MAJOR THEMES A central theme of this volume is the impact of social change. The influence of economic conditions, of ideology, of the normative timing of such life events as age of marriage and childbearing, are addressed in many chapters from hlany different perspectives. Social changes are shown to have both negative and positive consequences. On the nega tive side, for example, the sex differential in life expectancy is a biosocial phenomenon that greatly restricts the availability of sexual partners-or, more precisely, heterosexual partners-for older women. 420 pp. Englisch.

We were fortunate to have with us in Oak Ridge Dr. Niyogi and Dr. Mitra from Indian universities. Their close ties with the Bose Institute in Calcutta and the resultant correspondence with the Institute Director, Dr. S. M. Sircar, provided the stimulus for organization of this first Indian symposium, which was held in Calcutta. Under the direction of Dr. Sircar, Dr. B. B. Biswas did an outstandingjob of organizing this conference. Financial support was arranged through Dr. R. R. Ronkin of the United States National Science Foundation, who smoothed the way for the use of PL 480 funds which were approved by the Indian Government for the organization and running of this most valuable symposium. The many Indian scientists who contributed papers and enthusiastically and vigorously entered into the discussions demonstrated the strength of modern science in India. The topic, Control of Transcription, is a timely one, and considerable activity in this area is going on all over the world. The success of this symposium speaks well for the future of these Indian conferences and workshops being planned for the next few years. Again, the worldwide 'community of science' is clearly manifested by the close cooperation we have observed in this fruitful and successful symposium. 448 pp. Englisch.

The inside of the black boxes the nuclear chemist uses daily is explained in simple electronic terms. Knowledge of the inside not only satisfies curiosity but helps one 'get the most out of the available equipment.' Likewise, this book tries to give sufficient understanding for not 'over buying,' that is to say, for buying the equipment which just serves the purpose, instead of buying the best so at least it will serve the purpose. The first three chapters give a concise understanding of what the area of applied nuclear chemistry is concerned with and what kind of equipment is generally used. Chapter 1 gives a theoretical background, while Chapter 3 deals with the practical implementations. Thus, these chapters provide the background to determine what one can expect from the experiments. The remainder of the book is devoted to the practical instrumentation of the experiments. Each chapter deals with specific types of instruments and devices, discusses briefly the electronics involved, considers the limitations, and investigates how and to what extent they can be circumvented. The advantage of having different contributors, each with his own practical experience, shows clearly in this latter aspect. Detailed practical knowledge and experience can be explained best by the person who has long been con cerned with the subject theoretically and practically. 400 pp. Englisch.

For many years such computer networks have played an indirect role in our daily lives as the hidden servants of banks, airlines, and stores. Now they are becoming more visible as they enter our offices and homes and directly become part of our work, entertainment, and daily living. The study of how computer networks function is a combined study of communication theory and computer science, two disciplines appearing to have very little in common. The modern communication scientist wishing to work in this area soon finds that solving the traditional problems of transmission, modulation, noise immunity, and error bounds in getting the signal from one point to another is just the beginning of the challenge. The communication must be in the right form to be routed properly, to be handled without congestion, and to be understood at various points in the network. As for the computer scientist, he finds that his discipline has also changed. The fraction of computers that belong to networks is increasing all the time. And for a typical single computer, the fraction of its execution load, storage occupancy, and system management problems that are in volved with being part of a network is also growing. 560 pp. Englisch.

The first chapter gives an account on flow injection analysis. Thi~ technique has gained considerable interest in the recent past and offers many facets of the use of chemistry in automated analysis procedures. One of these facets is certainly also the use of ion-pairing reactions, and we have been fortunate to get two well-known experts to treat this subject. The use of ion-pairing techniques is being discussed from a batch extraction (sample handling) point of view as well as for flow injection and chromato graphic purposes. Immobilized enzymes are another area of major attention and their multidirectional use in analytical chemistry is illuminated in Chapter 3 with special emphasis on their use in connection with liquid chromatography. Needless to say, similar techniques have also found their way into con tinuous-flow methodology (Auto-Analyzers) and many of the aspects dis cussed in Chapter 3 are adaptable to this end. The need and recent urgency for separation of optical isomers in many areas, particularly pharmaceutical and clinical analysis, has spurred a flurry of activity in this special section of chromatography. The current status of the field of optical isomer separation is competently reviewed in Chapter 4. Again this is a typical area wherein it is the proper use of chemistry that finally delivers a solution. The last two chapters deal with precolumn or prechromatographic derivatization techniques. 316 pp. Englisch.

Thus, some two million years ago, it seems to have harbored an important phase of human evolu tion, when the descendants of the African Australopithecus migrated north wards, attempting to become Homo sapiens. Two thousand years ago, this very place was a germinal center for a new religion which determined some of the most important components of the history of western civilization. This may have been the first significant contribution of the people of the Lake of Galilee area to the world of ideas and values. More recently, some 70 years ago, this very place was a germinal center for a great ex periment aimed at the translation into actual reality of ethical and social values, by the establishment of the first kibbutz in Israel on this shore. We, therefore, hoped that by selecting this place for the Fifth Germinal Centers Meeting we could expect the inspiration of the site to generate new concepts and views. 756 pp. Englisch.

William Osler, The Student Life What follows is a collection of cases-or more aptly, the stories of our patients and friends who have been seen at The Ohio State University Hospitals where our faculty have provided their care and about whom this volume is written. Today many fear that our patients are being moved from center stage while we are being distracted by the technology of medicine. This volume was written with patients in mind. The idea is that the most intriguing questions and the most rewarding answers begin and end at the bedside. This is a story of our patients, told by expert clinicians and spiced with commentary along the way. This volume in no way at tempts to be comprehensive. Instead, it is like the practice of medicine, scattered, somewhat disjointed, while at the same time intensely personal and focused upon whatever problem the patient brings to us. The discussions are not so much about disease entities as they are about patients with problem'. The two are uniquely dif ferent. For instance, when the physician suspects hepatitis, not every imaginable cause can be actively investigated. Instead, tests and procedures are discriminate ly chosen, a part of medicine that is still more art than science. 336 pp. Englisch.

One goal was to present clinical information to support the belief that many of society's allegedly unh'eatable people could be helped to change their de structive patterns of living. A second purpose was to present a clear and simple primer for two groups of workers in the field. Most treatment institutions depend upon the services of nurses, aides, guards, and corrections officers. These people, who are the least prepared, do the hulk of the treatment. Because impulsive people learn much from their daily interactions out side of formal therapy, the understanding and the training of this 'front-line' working staff are crucial. These staff members may find the second part of the book more helpful because of its use of clinical examples and techniques. The other group for whom this book is written includes those who are beginning in the mental health or corrections field. The concept of useful treatment of impulse-ridden people has only begun to be introduced into professional training pro grams. The assumption that these individuals were untreatable has kept many professionals at the fringes of this field. For this reason, I hope that the book will find its way into the hands of psychiatric residents, psychologists, social workers, nurses, pro bation officers, prison guards, youth workers, policemen, judges, etc. 232 pp. Englisch.

We must produce constructive contact between our visions of hope and our scientific knowledge of the physical and social environment. This work is an effort to further that contact. We seek to focus upon the future relationship between man and his environment. Specifically, we attempt to synthesize two distinct approaches to this issue: environmental theory and utopian speculation. These two perspectives have rarely, if ever, been deliberately focused upon one an other. We believe that each suggests new questions and hopefully new an swers that would not normally be revealed through the separate insights of the other discipline. Both perspectives have existed in one form or another for centuries. Yet today, there is an increased urgency for their mutual development and interaction. This century, to its loss, has tended to abandon utopian specu lation. We witness 'a retreat from constructive thinking about the future in order to dig oneself into the trenches of the present. It is a ruthless elim ination of future-centered idealism by today-centered realism. We have lost the ability to see any further than the end of our collective nose. ' 2 At the same time, contemporary research on the environment suggests an urgent need for change in basic patterns of human behavior, for the for mation of new institutions and social structure. 296 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This century has been characterized by a strong and pervasive belief in 'certainty through science. ' It is a belief that has been nurtured by philosophers, scientists, and governing bodies alike. And, where vocal reassurance has failed to convince, modem technology has more than compensated. It has, in effect, been a century in at last to be making significant headway toward objective which humankind seemed and enduring truth. Yet, as the century winds toward its conclusion, this optimistic belief has begun to confront a challenging array of attacks. Widespread signals of concern are increasingly evident, and in the philosophy of science little but remnants remain of the bold rationale that once promised truth through method. One now senses a profound alteration taking place in both the concept of knowledge and of science-an alteration that may prove to be as significant as the Copernican revolution, the emergence of Darwinism, or the development of Freudian theory. As a result of the latter transformations, humans are no longer seen as the center of the universe, as essentially different from animals, or as fully conscious of the wellsprings of their activity. In the present case, however, we confront the loss of the human capacity for objective knowledge. 276 pp. Englisch.

The papers which resulted from this effort not only reflect a recent intensity of research in this area, but also highlight a mounting need for ask ing questions across disciplines and for integrating theories. The sponsor of the workshop was the Developmental Psychobiology Research Group (DPRG) of the Department of Psychiatry, University of Colorado Medical School, a group which itself is interdisciplinary and which has met regularly since 1969 to criticize research, ask questions, and discuss findings. In 1974, the Group was awarded an endowment fund by the Grant Foundation after a request for a proposal initiated by Philip Sapir and Douglas Bond. The aims of this fund are to facilitate the research of young investigators, to encourage new research, and to provide seed money for collaborative ventures. Much of what is reported here results from that support. Thus, happily, not only are the contributions timely by virtue of converging on an important topic, but they also commemorate more than five years of Grant Foundation support. Once the topic was chosen, a small number of guests were invited to participate. The papers of Timiras, Sackett, Konner, and Lamb represent dif fering perspectives from neurobiology, primatology, cultural anthropology, and social psychology. 336 pp. Englisch.

Over the years the Center has acted as a communica tions link and coordination point for interdisciplinary dis cussions and research. Several years ago, we discovered that there was a renewed interest among psychoanalysts, anthro pologists, and developmental psychologists in the investiga tion of the self, and the reason for this groundswell of ac tivity was the discovery of the importance of problems of meaning and interpretation in each discipline. Since inves tigators in each of these disciplines were relatively ignor ant of developments in the other approaches, we felt that a conference would be a timely catalyst. Each of the authors gave a presentation at the conference, and it is a mark of the success of the interdisciplinary effort that almost all the papers were extensively revised in response to the dis cussions. The first three papers by Arnold Goldberg, Ernest Wolf, and Robert LeVine all use Heinz Kohut's psychoanalytic self psychology as their starting point. Goldberg places the self within a broader framework of philosophical and psychoana lytic theories, finally locating it in the types of communi cative relationships a person constructs in his interactions with others. Wolf's paper explicates the basic ideas and innovations of Kohut's self psychology. 232 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The study of infant memory has flourished in the past decade for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the tremendous growth of interest in normal and pathological adult memory that began in the late fifties. Despite its common lineage to other areas of memory research, however, infant memory has perhaps been the least integrated into the mainstream. In reading the literature, one gets a sense of discontinuity between the study of infant memory and memory at all other stages of development from childhood to old age. The reasons for this are not hard to find. The techniques used to study memory in infants are usually very different from those typically used even in children. These techniques often limit the kind of inferences one can draw about the nature of the memory systems under investigation. Even when terms, concepts, and theories from the adult literature are applied to infants, they often bear only a loose relationship to their original usage. For example, an infant who stares longer at a new pattern than an old one is said to 'recognize' the old one and to have a memory system that shares many characteristics with a memory system that makes recognition possible in adults. Simi larly, an infant who emits a previously learned response, such as a leg kick, to an old stimulus is said to 'recall' that response and to be engaged in processes similar to those of adults who are recalling past events. 236 pp. Englisch.
