His formal higher educa tion did not extend beyond a semester of study at the Uni versity of Virginia. In 1942 he joined the faculty of the Tulane College of Arts and Sciences as a lecturer in English, and soon thereafter transferred to Philosophy. Appointed full professor of philoso phy in 1945, he became head of the Arts and Sciences depart ment in 1951, and university chairman in 1957. He has also served as special lecturer in the Department of Psychiatry at Louisiana State University Medical School from 1958 to 6 19 7. In 1969, upon his retirement from the department chairman ship, Professor Feibleman was appointed in the W.R. Irby Chair in Philosophy. In 1974 he was appointed Andrew W. Mellon Professor in the Humanities, having the honor of being not only the first occupant of this newly established chair but also perhaps the only person ever selected from the university faculty for this honor. In 1975, upon his final retirement from the university, the faculty approved his appointment as Emer itus Professor of Philosophy. 132 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -of A first attempt to formulate the phenomenological problem identity was originally made in my doctoral dissertation, 'The Identity of the Logical Proposition,' (Graduate Faculty, New School for Social Research, 1969). Further development of the problem, both direct and indirect, as well as extensive revision, has found expression in 'The Foundation of Predicative Experience and the Spontaneity of Consciousness' (Life-World and Consciousness. Essays for Aron Gurwitsch, 1972), 'Gurwitsch's Concept of Per ceptual Unity as the Basic Form of Rational Consciousness,' (Social Research, April, 1975), and 'The Refinement of the Concept of Constitution' (Research in Phenomenology, Vol. IV, 1974). These studies, in turn, formed the springboard for the present study of the problem of identity. No more than the other studies, this study far from claiming finality, is rather an ever-widening beginning of a phenomenological inquiry into the constitution of identity. I am enormously indebted to my friend and colleague, Professor Fred Kersten of the University of Wisconsin at Green Bay. No tribute is sufficient to acknowledge his invaluable assistance and counsel in the preparation of this work for publication. I would also like to thank Professor Werner Marx of the University of Freiburg for his sustaining encouragement in the later phase of this work. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this essay is to investigate the meaning of the concept of identity within a framework of the phenomenological theory of consciousness. 112 pp. Englisch.

The Symposium was sponsored jointly by CaSPAR, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) and the International Union of Radio Science CURSI). caSPAR is an interdisciplinary scientific organization, established by the International Council of Scientific Unions in 1958, to, in the words of its charter, 'provide the world scientific community with the means whereby it may exploit the possibilities of satellites and space probes of all kinds for scientific purposes and exchange the resulting data on a co operative basis.' The purpose of this particular CaSPAR Sympo sium was to present new results in infrared and submillimeter astronomy obtained by observations on aircraft, high altitude balloons, rockets, satellites, and space probes. Topics dis cussed included the Sun, the solar system, galactic and extra galactic objects as well as the cosmic background radiation. Instrumentation for observations in infrared and submillimeter astronomy was also discussed, with particular emphasis on future programs from space observatories. 244 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -No discipline has been more praised or more criticized than the writing of history. Cioero claimed that history teaches men how to live. Aris totle denied it the very name of science and regwded poetry as the higher wisdom. At various times history has been assigned a command ing or a demeaning statIUs in the hierarchy of sciences. Today one can admire the increasing precision and sophistication of the methods used by historia:ns. On the other hand, Thucydides' History of the PeZo ponesian War still serves as the ideal model of how to reconstruct the historical past. Even those who deny the possibility of an objective reconstruction of the past would themselves likie to be recorded by historians, 'objectively' or not. Dislike of history and fear of its verdict are not incompatible with reverence and awe for its practitioners, the historians. So man's attitude to history is ambiguous. The controversy about history continues. Widely differing issues are at stake. Historians themselves, however, are the least engaged in the struggle. Rarely does a historian decide to open the door of his study and join in the melee about the meaning of history. More often he slams it shut and returns to his studies, oblivious of the fact that with the passage of thne the gap between his scientific work and its audience might widen. The historian does not shun the battle, he merely chooses his own battleground. 704 pp. Englisch.

554 pp. Deutsch.

244 pp. Deutsch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Most of the problems posed by Physics to Mathematical Analysis are boundary value problems for partial differential equations and systems. Among them, the problems concerning linear evolution equations have an outstanding position in the study of the physical world, namely in fluid dynamics, elastodynamics, electromagnetism, plasma physics and so on. This Institute was devoted to these problems. It developed essentially the new methods inspired by Functional Analysis and specially by the theories of Hilbert spaces, distributions and ultradistributions. The lectures brought a detailed exposition of the novelties in this field by world known specialists. We held the Institute at the Sart Tilman Campus of the University of Liege from September 6 to 17, 1976. It was attended by 99 participants, 79 from NATO Countries [Belgium (30), Canada (2), Denmark (I), France (15), West Germany (9), Italy (5), Turkey (3), USA (14)] and 20 from non NATO Countries [Algeria (2), Australia (3), Austria (I), Finland (1), Iran (3), Ireland (I), Japan (6), Poland (1), Sweden (I), Zair (1)].
