This text develops some of the ideas and techniques involved in the optimization methods using calculus, leading to the study of convexity. This is followed by material on basic numerical methods, least squares, the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker theorem, penalty functions, and Lagrange multipliers. The authors have aimed their presentation at the student who has a working knowledge of matrix algebra and advanced calculus, but has had no previous exposure to optimization. 292 pp. Englisch.

The issue of control emerges as a central theme. Control plays a keyrole, firstly, in organizing the victim's thoughts with regard to the batterer, and, secondly, in cases of repeated acts of violence over a length of time. The study shows acts of violence to be both 'impulsive' and 'instrumental' and thereby refutes competing explanations in the literature that violence is either 'impulsive' or 'instrumental.' 180 pp. Englisch.

It so happens that the first professor of psychology in Norway had the middle name Krabbe ('Crab') His full name was Harald Krabbe Schjelderup. Hence, the crab became our symbol for the psychologist. For many years a 'crab feast' was held every autumn in Oslo in order to celebrate the material union of crabs and psychologists and ponder (symbolically and metaphorically) their shared fate. A comparison between the predicament of the crab and that of the modern psychologist may indeed be illuminating, once we make certain assumptions about their unique epistemic missions and systematically explore the severe constraints on their heroic search for knowledge. The crab is ordained to unravel the mysteries of the ocean, yet doomed to crawl sidewise on the is most of the time mollusks and bottom. His catch, alas, cadavers of sea creatures, and he cannot help envying the fish swimming freely above him. The psychologist's mission is to unravel the mysteries of His obligation to seek insight into essential the human soul. 372 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -A first approximation to the idea of a foliation is a dynamical system, and the resulting decomposition of a domain by its trajectories. This is an idea that dates back to the beginning of the theory of differential equations, i.e. the seventeenth century. Towards the end of the nineteenth century, Poincare developed methods for the study of global, qualitative properties of solutions of dynamical systems in situations where explicit solution methods had failed: He discovered that the study of the geometry of the space of trajectories of a dynamical system reveals complex phenomena. He emphasized the qualitative nature of these phenomena, thereby giving strong impetus to topological methods. A second approximation is the idea of a foliation as a decomposition of a manifold into submanifolds, all being of the same dimension. Here the presence of singular submanifolds, corresponding to the singularities in the case of a dynamical system, is excluded. This is the case we treat in this text, but it is by no means a comprehensive analysis. On the contrary, many situations in mathematical physics most definitely require singular foliations for a proper modeling. The global study of foliations in the spirit of Poincare was begun only in the 1940's, by Ehresmann and Reeb. 260 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -In 1885 Herman Ebbinghaus showed the world how the scientific method could be applied to the elusive phenomena of memory. But what of work on memory before Ebbinghaus The long ascendance of the Ebbinghaus tradition has eclipsed the contributions of scholars before Ebbinghaus. Memory in Historical Perspective draws together for the first time a collection of writings that figured prominently in scholarly thought about memory from the 8th century B. C. until the scientific investigation of memory began in the late 19th century. Memory in Historical Perspective will be of value to students, researchers, teachers, and writers who wish to place the study of memory in its historical context. The writings are thought-provoking; they deal with a wide range of basic issues in memory in a direct and refreshing way. A study of these writings will stimulate insights into current issues about memory in psychology, philosophy, artificial intelligence, anthropology, and education. 272 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Well suited to medium-scale general purpose computing, the Unix time sharing operating system is deservedly popular with academic institutions, research laboratories, and commercial establishments alike. Its user com munity, until recently a brotherhood of experienced computer profes sionals, it now attracting many people concerned with computer appli cations rather than the computer systems themselves. This book is intended for that new audience, people who have never encountered the Unix system before but who do have some acquaintance with computing. While helping beginning users get started is the primary aim of this book, it is also intended to serve as a handy reference subsequently. However, it is not designed to replace the definitive Unix system docu mentation. Unix operating systems now installed in computing centers, offices, and personal computers come in three related but distinct breeds: Seventh Edition Unix, Berkeley 4.2 BSD, and System V. These differ from each other in details, even though their family resemblance is strong. This book emphasizes System V, while paying heed to its two popular cousins. It also includes a few facilities in wide use, but not included in the normal system releases. Individual details, of course, must be found in the manuals supplied with each system. 352 pp. Englisch.
