While the pedagogical and computational advantages of this approach are not to be underestimated, there are, in my opinion, some disadvantages. Among these disadvantages is the narrow viewpoint that arises from the amputation of the finite dimensional time-invariant case from the much more general theory that had been developed using frequency domain methods. The frequency domain, which occupied center stage for most of the develop ments of HOC control theory, presents a natural context for analysis and controller synthesis for time-invariant linear systems, whether of finite or infinite dimen sions. A fundamental role was played in this theory by operator theoretic methods, especially the theory of Toeplitz and skew-Toeplitz operators. The recent lecture notes of Foias, Ozbay, and Tannenbaum [3] display the power of this theory by constructing robust controllers for the problem of a flexible beam. Although controller synthesis depends heavily on the special computational ad vantages of time-invariant systems and the relationship between HOC optimization and classical interpolation methods, it turns out that the analysis is possible without the assumption that the systems are time-invariant.

The origin of the great relief was work I had done earlier on renormalization group properties of homogeneous, isotropic fluid turbulence. At the time I worked on that, it was customary to ascribe the apparently stochastic nature of turbulent flows to some kind of stochastic driving of the fluid at large scales. It was simply not imagined that with purely deterministic driving the fluid could be turbulent from its own chaotic motion. I recall a colleague remarking that there was something fundamentally unsettling about requiring a fluid to be driven stochastically to have even the semblance of complex motion in the velocity and pressure fields. I certainly agreed with him, but neither of us were able to provide any other reasonable suggestion for the observed, apparently stochastic motions of the turbulent fluid. So it was with relief that chaos in nonlinear systems, namely, complex evolution, indistinguish able from stochastic motions using standard tools such as Fourier analysis, appeared in my bag of physics notions. It enabled me to have a physi cally reasonable conceptual framework in which to expect deterministic, yet stochastic looking, motions. Since then, a modest number of - searchers have developed our knowledge of this kind of activity, using a variety of methods, and addressing some quite fundamental questions about age changes, sex diff- ences, nature and function of behaviour. In this chapter I will review work on this topic, mentioning particularly the interest in comparing results from different informants and different methods of investigation. Briefly, rough-and-tumble play (or R&T for short) refers to a cluster of behaviours whose core is rough but playful wrestling and tumbling on the ground; and whose general characteristic is that the behaviours seem to be agonistic but in a non-serious, playful c- text. The varieties of R&T, and the detailed differences between rough-and-tumble play and real fighting, will be discussed later. 2. A BRIEF HISTORY OF RESEARCH ON R&T In his pioneering work on human play, Groos (1901) described many kinds of rough-and-tumble play.
