In the real applications of process calculus, specification and implementation are described as two agents, correctness of programs is treated as a certain behavior equivalence between specification and implementation, and then the proof of correctness of programs is a task to establish some behavior equivalence between them. The goal of this book is to provide some suitable and useful concepts and tools for the understanding and analysis of approximate correctness of programs in concurrent systems. The main goal is to present a detailed analysis of their mathematical and physical properties. Wave equations are time dependent. However, use of the Fourier trans form reduces their study to that of harmonic systems: the harmonic Helmholtz equation, in the case of the acoustic equation, or the har monic Maxwell system. This book concentrates on the study of these harmonic problems, which are a first step toward the study of more general time-dependent problems. In each case, we give a mathematical setting that allows us to prove existence and uniqueness theorems. We have systematically chosen the use of variational formulations related to considerations of physical energy. We study the integral representations of the solutions. These representa tions yield several integral equations. We analyze their essential properties. We introduce variational formulations for these integral equations, which are the basis of most numerical approximations. Different parts of this book were taught for at least ten years by the author at the post-graduate level at Ecole Poly technique and the University of Paris 6, to students in applied mathematics. The actual presentation has been tested on them. When Dr. Donald Meichenbaum first suggested it and I approached my coauthor Lasse Nurmi, it did not seem to be as formidable a task as it has become. Interviewing the centers in this book has taken years-to get responses, to summarize those responses, and to return the summaries for further comment. Many centers have been created in that time; others have suspended operation. This volume does not claim to present even a majority of those centers. However, the ones contained herein are representative of 'what is out there. ' The idea to create a comprehensive trauma center is not new. The initial section of this forward examines thoughts I proposed as part of my compre hensive examination for my doctorate. Many of the ideas proposed then (1989) seem to fit now. The method of iterative aggregation in large-scale problems is studied. For fixed weights, successively simpler aggregated problems are solved and the convergence of their solution to that of the original problem is analyzed. An introduction to block integer programming is considered. Duality theory, which is widely used in continuous block programming, does not work for the integer problem. A survey of alternative methods is presented and special attention is given to combined methods of decomposition. With respect to modeling and analysis, the response to interconnect dom inance is evolutionary. Atomistic- and grain-level models of interconnect structure, and performance models at multi-gigahertz operating frequencies, together guide the selection of improved materials and process technologies (e. g. , damascene copper wires, low-permittivity dielectrics). Previously in significant effects (e. g. , mutual inductance) are added into performance mod els, as older approximations (e. g. , lumped-capacitance gate load models) are discarded. However, at the system-level and chip planning level, the necessary response to interconnect dominance is revolutionary. Convergent design flows do not require only distributed RLC line models, repeater awareness, unifi cations with extraction and analysis, etc. Rather, issues such as wiring layer assignment, and early prediction of the resource and performance envelope for the system interconnect (in particular, based on statistical models of the system interconnect structure), also become critical. The conference was held in Copper Mountain, CO from July 11-16, 1999. It was a an extension of a New York Academy of Sciences meeting entitled 'Primordial Immunity: Foundations for the Vertebrate Immune System' held on May 2-5,1993 at the Marine Biological Laboratories in Woods Hole, MA. The proceedings of that meeting were published in The Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences (volume 712). At that meeting all the attendes agreed that this type of conference (a relatively small focused gathering) allowed for participation by investigators at all levels of their careers. We further agreed that we should search for a forum that would allow this meeting to continue. The FASEB Summer Research Conference was an excellent vehicle for this type of meeting. Furthermore, this year's participants decided to continue this meeting as a regularly scheduled FASEB sponsored event. This was a unique conference in the sense that it focused upon mechanisms of development and defense in protostome and deuterostome invertebrates and lower vertebrates.
