This book studies properties of logical systems having some of the classical connectives and implication in the neighbourhood of Heyt ing's implication. I have not included anything on entailment, al though it belongs to this neighbourhood, mainly because of the appearance of the Anderson-Belnap book on entailment. In the later chapters of this book, I have included material that might be of interest to the intuitionist mathematician. Originally, I intended to include more material in that spirit but I decided against it. There is no coherent body of material to include that builds naturally on the present book. There are some serious results on topological models, second order Beth and Kripke models, theories of types, etc., but it would require further research to be able to present a general theory, possibly using sheaves. That would have postponed pUblication for too long. I would like to dedicate this book to my colleagues, Professors G. Kreisel, M.O. Rabin and D. Scott. I have benefited greatly from Professor Kreisel's criticism and suggestions. Professor Rabin's fun damental results on decidability and undecidability provided the powerful tools used in obtaining the majority of the results reported in this book. The Symposium upon which this treatise is based was organized to bring members from these communities together to explore problems of mutual interest. The biomaterials which are used in medical or dental prostheses must not only exhibit structural stability and provide the desired function, but they must also perform over extended periods of time in the environment of the body. The latter is a very stringent requirement. The oral and other physiological environments are designed by nature to break down many organic substances. Also of importance is the requirement that materials used in the prosthesis not have a deleterious effect on body tissues. Most foreign (to the body) substances are somewhat toxic to human tissues; in fact, few factors are more limiting in the medical prosthesis field than the biocompatibility problem. Some of these problems and the attempts to solve them are discussed in this volume.

By contrast, certain recent studies on 'constitutive functions', or preoperatory functional schemes, have convinced us of the existence of a sort of logic of functions (springing from the schemes of actions) which is prior to the logic of operations (drawn from the general and reversible coordinations between actions). This preoperatory 'logic' accounts for the very general, and until now unexplained, primacy of order relations between 4 and 7 years of age, which is natural since functions are ordered dependences and result from oriented 'applications'. And while this 'logic' ends up in a positive manner in formalizable structures, it has gaps or limitations. Psychologically, we are interested in understanding the system atic errors due to this primacy of order, such as the undifferentiation of 'longer' and 'farther', or the non-conservations caused by ordinal estimations (of levels, etc. ), as opposed to extensive or metric evaluations. In a sense which is psychologically very real, this preoperatory logic of constitutive functions represents only the first half of operatory logic, if this can be said, and it is reversibility which allows the construction of the other half by completing the initial one-way structures. 232 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -In the past decennia nonhuman primates have been increasingly used for research purposes in various scientific fields. Much interest has been focused on this group of animals in general and on the rhesus monkey in particular because of its close phylo genetic relationship with man. In some fields of research, however, such as embryology and microscopic anatomy, much less attention has been paid to nonhuman primates, probably because of the expense involved in the collection of the extensive material needed. On the other hand, teratological and experimental embryologic studies must be based upon a thorough knowledge of the normal ontogenesis since only in that way can a reliable distinction be made between normal and abnormal or induced develop ment. Each ontogenetic study essentially consists of a comparison of different deve lopmental stages. In most reports dealing with the development of individual organs or their subunits the material used is classified according to the estimated age or the length of the embryos. These criteria, however, are not valid, since considerable varia tion in developmental stage occurs between animals of the same age even between littermates and between animals of the same length. Therefore a method is needed for assigning embryos to successive developmental stages that are defmed on the basis of extemal and internal characteristics. The introduction of regional administra tion of vasoactive drugs through percutaneously placed angiographic catheters was soon followed by methods of transcatheter vessel occlusion using temporary or permanent embolic materials. At the same time methods of opening up nar rowed or completely obstructed blood vessels with percutaneously introduced balloon catheters were being perfected. Thus, regional blood flow reduction or regional blood flow increase can now be accomplished with percutaneous angiographic methods in lieu of major surgical interventions.
