Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware -Early one morning in April of 1987, the Chinese mathematician J. -Q. Zhong died unexpectedly of a heart attack in New York. He was then near the end of a one-year visit in the United States. When news of his death reached his Chinese-American friends, it was immediately decided by one and all that something should be done to preserve his memory. The present volume is an outgrowth of this sentiment. His friends in China have also established a Zhong Jia-Qing Memorial Fund, which has since twice awarded the Zhong Jia-Qing prizes for Chinese mathematics graduate students. It is hoped that at least part of the reasons for the esteem and affection in which he was held by all who knew him would come through in the succeeding pages of this volume. The three survey chapters by Li and Treibergs, Lu, and Siu (Chapters 1-3) all center around the areas of mathematics in which Zhong made noteworthy contributions. In addition to putting Zhong's mathematical contributions in perspective, these articles should be useful also to a large segment of the mathematical community; together they give a coherent picture of a sizable portion of contemporary geometry. The survey of Lu differs from the other two in that it gives a firsthand account of the work done in the People's Republic of China in several complex variables in the last four decades.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 500 pp. Englisch.

In the work accom plished since that time, research has been greatly expanded on fission products and has been extended to many nuclides formed in the fission of various nu clei induced by neutrons, gamma rays, charged particles, and in spontaneous fission. Amassing of experimental results is an important task not only for nu clear engineering but also for an understanding of the fission process itself, for bringing into existence a finished theory on the unique and intriguing physi cal phenomenon which plays such a decisive role in the practical utilization of nuclear energy. In this reference manual, an attempt is made to collect and generalize upon the results of experimental research work over the period spanning 1939 to 1962, on yields of fission products and on the mass distribution of fission fragments. Various instances of the fission of nuclei induced by neutrons, gamma rays, charged particles, and spontaneous fission of nuclei are discussed.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - As the demand for environmental quality is increasing and as the current GATT rules monitored by the WTO are not very suitable for environmental protection, either a new international environmental organization may be formed soon or new environmental regulations may be added to GATT. In either case, understanding of the interactions between trade and the environment will be vital. Trade and the Environment presents both the theoretical and empirical exposition of (i) the impact of trade liberalization on environmental quality; (ii) the impact of environmental regulations on international competitiveness; and (iii) strategic trade and environmental policies. An important feature of Trade and the Environment as compared to earlier books is that it brings together the reciprocal interactions between trade and the environment. It can be used as the main or complementary textbook for a course on trade and the environment.

Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Stress is a feature of all of our lives. The business of working in the health professions means that we are constantly being exposed to stress. That stress can sometimes be enriching and motivating. It has often been pointed out that stress can be positive or nega tive. When stress is positive, it rarely needs any further attention. When it is negative, it is a problem. The first aim of this book is to discuss the various sorts of stress that may be experienced by a variety of health professionals, including social workers, nurses, doctors, physiotherapists, occu pational therapists and others. What they all have in common is that they work closely with other people - people who often have emotional problems or problems in living. Working with other people who are troubled in this way is indeed stressful. For too long it has been assumed that health professionals should 'get on with it' and put up with any stress that is involved in caring for others. The second aim of this book is to offer practical ways of coping with negative stress. These methods range from simple relaxation techniques, through meditation to methods that involve discussing stress with others: counselling, co-counselling and group work. All the methods described in this book have been used with a variety of health professionals, and not all of these methods will necessarily appeal to you. One of the fundamental points about stress is that it tends to affect each individual idiosyncratically.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Among seismic waves generated by widely dilferent types of sources, the waves that are the most interest ing and of the longest duration are usually surface waves (which are also called normal waves, interference and channel waves, natural vibrations of layers, etc. ). These waves are distinguished by their dispersion and reso nance, and are used in many investigations - in the determination of the structure of the medium (the existence of surface layers and waveguides), in the determination of the coordinates and properties of the source (in par ticular its energy and mechanism), in the identification of subterranean exploSions, in the mapping of micro- seisms, in the tracing of storms, etc. Outlines of the wide literature concerning surface waves can be found in [2, 9, 40J. Surface waves can be classed as Rayleigh or Love waves, depending on their velocity and polarization: the displacements of particles in Rayleigh waves are parallel, and the displacements in Love waves perpendicular, to the vertical plane containing the direction of propagation (some variation from this polarization is possible close to the source or in the presence of horizontal inhomogeneities in the medium). The present work is devoted to the calculation and investigation of Love waves in a vertically layered medium. The method used is based on the spectral theory of linear differential operators. ' This method is much more effective than previously applied methods based on the approximation of the medium by a set of homogeneous layers.

Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - March 10, 1964 The problem of friction and wear between solid bodies is about as old as the human race. The early Egyptians and Romans had discovered the utility of lubricants in reducing friction and wear during a period many years B. C. From the fall of the Roman Empire until the Renaissance, I ittle new information appeared. A major break-through occurred in establ ishing the laws of friction (friction independent of area and proportional to load) through the work of Leonardo da Vinci (1452 - 1519), Amontons (1699) and Coulomb (1785). While most of the studies until this time were based largely on a mechanistic approach, a new trend was initiated in the 1930's by F. P. Bowden and D. Tabor wherein the physics and chemistry of the problem were treated as well. Since then, a large I iterature has been buil t up deal ing with such problems as metal transfer, molecular theories to explain wear, local welding between contacting surfaces, interlocking theories, wear-rate studies, the development of various test methods, effects of surface films, fretting phenomena, effects of temperature and environmental conditions, abrasion, surface energy relations, etc. The I ist of contributors in this field is indeed too long to cite here in any detail. Among those that might be mentioned, however, are R. Holm, G. A. Tomlinson, H. Ernst, M. E. Merchant, 10M. Feng, J. K. Lancaster, W. Hirst, F. T. Burwell, D. W. Baker, F. D. Brailey, E. R.

Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - In this collection of essays, M. Dane (`Duke') Picard takes the reader on journeys across deserts, mountains, canyons, and rivers from the American Southwest to Italy and France. His blend of vivid description and humor evokes the rugged days of field petroleum geology in the Great Plains and pastel Badlands of Utah and Wyoming in the 1950s and later days unlocking the geological secrets of sandstone in the Rockies. Along the way, he pokes gentle fun at the academic life in stories that will make anyone smile who's ever sat on a faculty committee or chaired a professional meeting. The final essays on his travels through Provence and Italy are rich with details of the beauty and the history - both human and geological - of the regions. M.D. Picard is the author of numerous professional articles and books, and has served as president of the National Association of Geology Teachers, the Society of Sedimentary Geology, and the Rocky Mountain section of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. He is well known to the geological community for the essays and book reviews he has published over the last ten years in geoscience journals and magazines.

Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - In recent years many research workers have turned their attention to the quantitative characterization of complex compounds and reactions of complex-formation in solution. Instability constants characterize quantitatively the equili bria in solutions of complex compounds and are extensively used by chemists of widely-varying specialities, in analytical chemistry, electrochemistry, the technology of non-ferrous and rare metals, etc., for calculations of various kinds. Despite the wealth of numerical data, no reasonably full coliection of instability constants of complex compounds has been made until now. The various individual collections of data are far from complete and in most cases omit references to the source materials. Moreover, the present state of the chemistry of complex compounds most urgently demands the complete systematization of data on instability constants and an extension of work in this field which would take advantage of the latest physico-chemical methods. The present work contains instability constants for 1,381 complex compounds. We have considered it convenient to preface the summary of the instability constants with an introductory section of a general theoretical character. This section deals with methods for the calculation of instability constants from experimental data, the influence of external conditions, such as temperature and ionic strength, on the stability of com plexes, and the principal factors determining the stability of complex compounds in aqueous solution. (vii) PREFACE In compiling the summary we have used the original litera ture and abstracts for the most part up to 1954, and some work published in 1955-1956.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Recent scientific and industrial developments have demon strated the major effects (advantageous or otherwise) of trace components in compounds, which in commercial products may substantially affect the properties and the course of reactions, especially catalytic ones. Some of these problems (e.g., the pur ity of natural waters and air) have attracted the attention not only of specialists but also of society generally. It would be impossible to do research on trace components and contaminants if we did not have reliable rapid and sensitive methods of determining substances present in mixtures in minute concentrations. Gas chromatography is an effective method of purity testing. This book deals with analysis for trace components, together with the basic methods of gas chromatography that are used for the purpose. We have tried to reflect here the principal papers in this area appearing in the foreign literature and in Rus sian. Weare indebted to Plenum Pre~'B for the opportunity of pre senting this edition. Moscow September 1972 v Preface Gas -chromatographic analysis for impurities is presently a rapidly developing area in gas chromatography, because many practical topics give considerable importance to impurity analy sis. Progress in this analysis bas been such for volatile com pounds (and also for nonvolatile ones, when reactive gas chroma tography is used) that one can now be confident of solving most practical problems in this way. Commercial ionization detectors of high sensitivity and selectivity often allow one to detect impuri ties down to levels of parts in 109.

Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - In the ten years since the first publication on PCR (Saiki et al. , 1985), this in vitro method of nucleic acid replication and modification has grown to rival in popularity traditional microbiological, genetical und technical procedures for cloning, sequencing, gene detecting and related procedures. To date the PCR literature has emphasized six main areas of application: genetic mapping, detection of mutations, genetic polymorphism, transcriptional splicing and regulation, molecular virology and quantitative procedures. The overwhelming focus of quantification of DNA or RNA by PCR has been on human microbiology and oncological problems. The exquisite sensitivity of PCR gives this method the ability to detect extremely rare DNAs, mRNAs, mRNAs in small numbers of cells or in small amounts of tissue, and mRNAs expressed in mixed-cell populations. However, the exact and accurate quantification of specific nucleic acids in biological samples is in spite of numerous publications in that field still a general problem: during the peR process, an unknown initial number of target sequences are used as a template from which a large quantity of specific product can be obtained. Although the amount of product formed is easy to determine, it is difficult to deduce the initial copy number of the target molecule because the efficiency of the peR is largely unknown.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This translation from Russian into English of the monograph Hematopoi etic and Lymphoid Tissue in Culture by E. A. Luriya provides us for the first time with a comprehensive review of the massive amount of work carried out in the USSR in this important area of biological research. Historically, the pioneering tissue culture studies of Maksimov, Popov, Chasovnikov, and their colleagues working in Russia in the early part of this century provided much of the impetus for subsequent studies on lymphopoiesis and hematopoiesis in vitro and much of the basic information used subsequently to achieve immune responses in vitro and to develop the methodology for cloning hematopoietic stem cells. Particularly welcome in this translation is the addition of the Appendix, in which Drs. Luriya and Fridenshtein describe in some detail the methodology that has been developed in their laboratories for the study of a variety of cell types in cell and tissue culture. For many of us, this description provides information that had previously not been accessible to us: porosity of millipore fIlters in relation to growth properties; colony-forming cell adhesiveness; pro liferation kinetics of stromal cells; differential effectiveness of various media used for culture of liver cells; details of washing procedures for fIlter substrates used in culture.

Accordingly, most investigators are not aware of the work of their Chinese colleagues in this field. Yet the field has been an active if small one in China, and has covered a variety of topics that include electrophysiology, neurochemistry, neuropharmacology, neuropsychology, and in strumentation. Standard techniques and instruments, a number of Chinese manufacture, have been employed. Moreover, Chinese workers have been quite familiar with the publications of other investigators, as is readily apparent from the bibliographies of the papers (see Index).

The special feature of these proceedings was two systematic series of lectures, one by F. Pham of C.E.N., Saclay and CERN, Geneva and the other by G. Rickayzen of the University of Kent, Canterbury. Pham dwelt at length on the applications of the methods of alge braic topology and differential forms to the study of the analytic properties of S-matrix theory, in particular, with reference to the location of singularities of the multiple scattering processes. This exposition was a natural sequel to the lectures of V. L. Teplitz, pub lished in an earlier volume of this series. Rickayzen discus.sed in detail the latest theory of superconductivity. Other lectures were those of Scadron, who dealt with some formal features of potential scattering theory, and B. M. Udgaonkar and A. N. Mitra, who spoke on certain aspects of bootstraps and quark models, respectively. The contributions in pure mathematics in this volume include two lectures by S. K. Singh, one on the field of Mikusinski operators and another on Riemann mapping theorem, and a lecture on cosine func tionals by P. L. Kannappan. One of the highlights of the symposium was a lecture by S. K. Srinivasan who is keeping alive the interest of the Madras group in the theory of stochastic processes and who, in particular, has enlarged the domain of the application of the theory of product densities.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The first time that we, the editors of this volume, met, a chance remark by one of us, newly returned from fieldwork in Fiji, quickly led to an animated discussion of our experiences doing anthropological research with children. Following that occasion, we began to seek each other out in order to continue such conversations, because we had found no other opportunity to discuss these significant events. We knew our experiences were rich sources of cross-cultural data and stimuli to rethinking anthro pological theory and methods. A cursory review of the literature on fieldwork revealed, to our surprise, that fieldworker's experiences with children were rarely and only briefly mentioned (Hostetler and Huntington, 1970, are an early exception). In order to learn more about research that included the ethnographers' children, we organized a conference on the topic at Michigan State University on May 1, 1982. This volume includes papers from that conference, as well as insights and ideas from the formal and informal discussions among the conference participants and audience. This volume, like the conference which preceded it, is intended to be the effects of accompanying children on anthropological an exploration of field research and on the effects of fieldwork on the children themselves. Additionally, we see this book as part of an anthropological inquiry into research as a cultural process, by which is meant the effects of the researchers' cultural identity--class, gender, age, ethnicity, and other characteristics--on fieldwork.

The conference, held Oct. 26-27, 1989, at Loews Anatole Hotel in Dallas, Texas, brought together more than 250 interested individuals and speakers for anexchangeofinformationand ideas. Topics rangedfrom the currentcondition of the Southwest economy to the factors shaping the future. Theinfluences on the Southwest economy are diverse but interrelated. For example, the Southwest faces a complex dilemma in reforming its educational system. As conference speakers illustrated many times, education reform and the quality ofour schools are closely linked to the region's, if not the nation's, ability to compete in future world markets. These proceedings follow the basic organizational pattern of the confer ence. Keynote and luncheon addresses appear in the first section, General Meetings-The 1990s: ADifferent Decade, which includes speeches by Bobby R. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The motivation and inspiration for this book come directly from expe- ences with clients during the years that I practiced HIV-related law at the Legal Aid Society of San Diego, Inc. The issues discussed in this work reflect issues that arose on a recurring basis with clients participating in HIV research studies, with investigators calling for guidance on the legal implications of particular aspects of their proposed studies, and with research institutions and health care facilities struggling to make sense of legal maneuvers aimed at obtaining the records of their HIV-infected patients. It is impossible to thank each of these persons individually for their provocative questions and their insights. The discussion of ethical and legal issues relating to the design of clinical trials reflects questions raised during discussions with Donald J. Slymen, Ph.D. Don was one of the first researchers, in my realm of experience, to pay close attention to ethical concerns, and I am greatly appreciative of his contribution to both my professional growth and the development of various scenarios discussed in this text. The portions of this text dealing with confidentiality are the result of many hours of thoughtful discussion and analysis with Penn Lerblance, J.D., now deceased and still missed. Penn and I often participated together as presenters of in-service training programs for health prof- sionals. Penn addressed discrimination, and I focused on confidentiality.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This set of lectures is the outgrowth of a new course in the Department of Materials Science at Stanford University. It was taught collectively by the authors of the various sections and represents an attempt to increase the awareness of students in the materials area of computer simulation techniques and potentialities. The topics often ranged far afield from the materials area; however, the total package served the intended purpose of being an initiation into the world of computer simulation and, as such, made a useful first iteration to the intended purpose. The second iteration, which is in process, deals exclusively with the materials area. The course was designed to teach students a new way to wrestle with 'systems' problems in the materials science work area that require the synthesis and interactions of several disciplines of knowledge. This course was a response to the realization that effective handling of real problems, which are essentially systems problems, is one of the most important at tributes of a graduate materials scientist. About a third of the course was devoted to the student's selected problem, in the materials area, which he simulated using the digital computer.

Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The development of an effective method of drilling oil and gas wells to depths of 3-5 km and more is a complex problem of great practical interest. 'Deep Hole Drilling With Explosives' is a distinctive and very interesting work of the engineer A. P. Ostrovskii, who more than twenty years ago, by his original suggestions, made a start in investigating the field of so-called non-bit processes of shattering rocks when drilling holes, a.nd, with his co-workers, developed a fundamentally new explosive method of drilling deep holes. This book discusses the new trend in worldwide a.pplication of explosives in technology and the national economy; it presents considerable experimental material on the effect of explosions in solid media, material that is not only interesting to specialists in mining but also to physicists. Many phenomena discussed by the author and cited in the book still await explanation, but the fact that these phenomena have been already subjected to experimental study undoubtedly adds to our knowledge of one of the most meagerly investigated areas of the science of explosions-concerning the shattering effect of explo sions on solid media. July 29, 1960 Professor M. A. Sadovskii Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR 1 INTRODUCTION Together with the perfection of turbine drilling and the introduction of electrical drills in the USSR, new methods have been developed for shattering rock and drilling deep oil and gas wells without the use of a bit.

Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This volume explores in detail the four interrelated branches of the study of surface phenomena-surface thermodynamics, nucleation, diffusion, and fine-particles technology-providing an unusual and comprehensive body of knowledge that will be of interest and practical value to both materials researchers and practising engineers. The growing awareness-since the advent of the space age-among solid-state physicists, metallurgists, ceramists, chemical engineers, and mechanical engineers of the need for a broad interdisciplinary under standing of the fundamental phenomena common to all matedals has led in recent years to the development of a new field of scientific investigation, Materials Science. To help promote interest in and con tributions to this new technology, annual symposia on 'Fundamental Phenomena in the Materials Sciences' have been organized by the Ilikon Corporation. The first symposium, reported in Volume 1 of this series, was held in Boston, Massachusetts, on February 1 and 2, 1963; sintering and plastic deformation were the main topics of discussion. The second meeting, also held in Boston, on January 27 and 28, 1964, was exclusively concerned with the general interdisciplinary problems related to surface phenomena, that is, all of those physical and chemical areas that are pertinent to the surface of a solid, or to the interface between a solid and a gas, a solid and a liquid, or a solid and a solid.

Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The second volume of this series is devoted to the Proceedings of the Second Anniversary Symposium under the chairmanship of the Niels Bohr Visiting Professor of the year - Professor L. Rosenfeld, Deputy Director of NORDIT A, Copenhagen, and the Editor of Nuclear Physics. With particular appropriateness, the Symposium was inaugu rated by the Honorable C. Subramaniam, Union Cabinet Minister, the founding father of the Institute. The meeting was characterized by two features: (1) the enlargement of the scope of the discussions in theoretical physics, with the inclusion of many-body problems and statistical mechanics! (2) Seminars on pure mathematics, stimulated by the prdence and participation of Professor Marshall H. Stone of Chicago as the First Ramanujan Visit ing Professor at the Institute. The year 1963 marked a new stage in the development of high energy physics - the first successes of SU (3) symmetry and the eight fold way had such an impact on the scientific world that the hard, unyielding domain of strong interactions was now again open to ex ploration. The volume opens with two significant lectures by Sudarshan and O'Raifeartaigh on fundamental problems relating to internal sym metries. The theory of Regge poles, after its initial triumph, met with rough weather, the nature and intensity of which can be realized from the series of discussions in this volume.

Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Mobile Channel Characteristics introduces the principal transmission phenomena of mobile and personal communication - the ones that affect design of modems, channel simulators, smart antennas, and other system components at the physical level. It is designed to be accessible to senior undergraduates, as well as graduate students and working engineers. The treatment parallels mathematical derivations with intuitive explanations and simple approximations in order to develop the reader's understanding of the phenomena. Because of this strong tutorial flavor, the text is also suitable for those entering the area from a different academic discipline. Mobile Channel Characteristics was conceived and written as an interactive text to be viewed on a computer screen. It includes many features not found in conventional texts: The entire text resides on your hard drive. It is always ready, just a mouse-click away; It is a live document. Try different parameter values, and the equations, tables and graphs recalculate as you watch. Animated graphics illustrate dynamics of the channel. Explore propagation, modulation or system models interactively to gain additional insight; The examples and appendices are `tear-off design sheets'. You can use their programs on the job or in your thesis to speed up your work; It links you to the world. Hyperlinks connect you to websites of cited authors, to online research journals, and to employers and graduate schools, all through the Internet. Mobile Channel Characteristics includes working programs for three different methods of channel gain generation for fading channel simulation, as well as working programs to illustrate their use. Mobile Channel Characteristics is an essential reference tool for practising engineers, researchers, academics, and students. It is a self-study text equally suited for classroomuse.

Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The development of contemporary molecular biology with its growing tendency toward in-depth study of the mechanisms of biological processes, structure, function, and identification of biopolymers requires application of accurate physicochemical methods. Electrophoresis occupies a key position among such methods. A wide range of phenomena fall un der the designation of electrophoresis in the literature at the present time. One common characteristic of all such phenomena is transport by an elec tric field of a substance whose particles take on a net charge as a result of interaction with the solution. The most important mechanisms for charge generation are dissociation of the substance into ions in solution and for mation of electrical double layers with uncompensated charges on particles of dispersed medium in the liquid. As applied to the problem of separation, purification, and analysis of cells, cell organelles, and biopolymers, there is a broad classification of electrophoretic methods primarily according to the methodological charac teristics of the process, the types of supporting media, etc. An extensive literature describes the use of these methods for the investigation of differ ent systems. A number of papers are theoretical in nature. Thus, the mi croscopic theory has been developed rather completely [13] by considering electrophoresis within the framework of electrokinetic phenomena based on the concept of the electrical double layer.

Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Properties of alloys are determined to a considerable extent by the form. the dispersity. the composition, and the quantitative relationships of the structural components. This monograph is an attempt to present the mechanism of the formation of the structure of alloys from the viewpoint of the most modern theory of phase transformations. The metastable state is treated at length be cause there are few data in the literature up to the present time. The book concerns the conditions determining the creation of the different phases in alloys. The forma tion of crystals of different compositions and dispersities is described. The cause of different degrees of metasta bility of alloys, the mechanism of the transformation of metastable systems into the stable state, and other problems are analyzed. The most widely used alloys were investigated. The authors tend to avoid demonstrations based on cumbersome calculations and whenever possible replace them with conceptual models. Some of the problems described here resulted from discussions during the seminar of the Metal Science Faculty of the Dnepropetrovsk Metallurgical Institute, directed by K. P. Bunin. The basic experiments were made by the author in the laboratory of the Department of Metal Physics of Dnepropetrovsk State University in collaboration with E. V. Finagin, A. N. Shul'diner, E. Z. Graifer, E.! Psarev. ! I. Pesetskii, V. 1. L'nyanyi and I. S. Miroshnichenko.
