The complexity and high technology required in manufacturing structural parts with these materials as well as the need for fundamental description of their processing and property characteristics necessitates a close col laboration between industrial and academic researchers. This col laboration has become significant not only in solving specific tech nical problems, but in providing a much needed supply of scientists with training and background focused on anticipated demand for further advances in composite usage. The fact that the transportation industry with its current international character has a vital interest in composite materials for weight savings applications has provided a strong incentive for extending these developments beyond national boundaries. An excel lent example of an established international venture is the building of the new generation commercial aircraft by the Boeing Company with composite parts manufactured by Aerita1ia in Italy. Accordingly, we organized a Joint U. S. -Italy Symposium on Composite Materials in Italy which was successfully held on June 15-19, 1981, under the primary sponsorship of NSF in the U. S. A. and CNR in Italy. The strong support we also received from industrial co-sponsors, both from Italy and the U. S. Electrooptical devices have become a challenging form of study that has penetrated both the electrical engineering and the physics departments of most major schools. A scattered particle provides a dynamical probe of the target system. The practical problem of interest here is the scattering of a low energy electron by an N-electron atom. It has been difficult in this area of study to achieve theoretical results that are even qualitatively correct, yet quantitative accuracy is often needed as an adjunct to experiment. The present book describes a quantitative theoretical method, or class of methods, that has been applied effectively to this problem. Quantum mechanical theory relevant to the scattering of an electron by an N-electron atom, which may gain or lose energy in the process, is summarized in Chapter 1. The variational theory itself is presented in Chapter 2, both as currently used and in forms that may facilitate future applications. The theory of multichannel resonance and threshold effects, which provide a rich structure to observed electron-atom scattering data, is presented in Chapter 3. Practical details of the computational implementation of the variational theory are given in Chapter 4. Chapters 5 and 6 summarize recent appli cations of the variational theory to problems of experimental interest, with many examples of the successful interpretation of complex structural fea tures observed in scattering experiments, and of the quantitative prediction of details of electron-atom scattering phenomena. 240 pp. Englisch.

Here we present in a systematic fashion half of the results found du ring this period, to wit, the results on denumerably infinite spaces (' ~O- forms') . Over the years, the increasing popularity of the unit operation of crystallization has been clearly demonstrated by the steady increase in numbers of both the papers presented and the attendances at the meetings. The 6th Symposium (1-3 September 1975) was organized jointly with the European Federation of Chemical Engineering Working Party on Crystallization, and the 44 papers presented were arranged into four sessions - A: Secondary Nucleation, B: Crystal Growth Kinetics, C: Crystal Habit Modification, D: Crystallizer Design, E: Indus trial Crystallizer Operation and Case Studies. The same groupings are preserved in this edited version of the proceedings. This is the first time that the Industrial Crystallization Symposium papers have appeared in one volume. After the 5th (1972) Symposium, authors we.re encouraged to submit their papers to an international journal specializing in crystallization. However, the results were not altogether satisfactory in that less than one third of the papers presented at the meeting were offered for consideration. This NATO Institute was a conti nuation of aseries of NATO Advanced Study Institutes of Worshops which took place at regular intervals till 1979. This is the first time, however, that charge density wave transport and electronic properties of low dimen sional organic conductors are treated on an equal footing. The program of the Institute was framed by tutorial lectures in the theories and experiments of low dimensional conductors. The bulk of the course covered two series of low-dimensional mate rials with their respective properties. 1) The I-D inorganic conductors exhibiting the phenomena of sliding charge density waves, narrow band noise, memory effects, etc .- 2) Low-dimensional crystallized organic conductors giving rise to various possibilities of ground states, spin-Peierls, spin density wave, Peierls, superconductivity and magnetic-field induced spin density wave, etc . GC-MS was mandated for the analysis of 114 compounds, yet the spectra of many of them, if they had been recorded at all, were scattered throughout the literature. Moreover, it soon became apparent that, even if a sufficient number of instruments could be made available to undertake the task of monitoring 114 substances in the effluents of 21 categories of industry, the personnel could not be trained to perform the analyses and interpret the results. The solution to this problem has been the development of highly automated mass spectrometers which can be operated by personnel without the traditional research training. The VIII International Congress of theRE Society was held in Jerusalem, Israel, June 18-23, 1978. The Congress had as its scientific objective a wide range of sub jects concerning the RE System, especially as related to macro phage function and interaction with lymphocytes. Emphasis of the Congress was placed on the nature and function of macrophages and other cells of the RE System with reference to immune responses, anti-infectious activity, tumor immunity, autoimmunity, and trans plant rejection. The secretion of soluble factors by macrophages and lymphocytes and the mode of action of these factors on other cells was stressed. During the Congress some discussion was entertained concerning the controversy as to what constitutes the 'RE System' per se. Some investigators feel that the phagocytic activity of ~~crophages is the most important aspect of the RE System playing also a major role in many parameters of immunity. Mononuclear phagocytes include tissue macrophages as well as cir culating monocytes and their precursors. On January 4, 1926 the Strong Memorial Hospital was officially opened. The first patient was admitted the next day. On January 7th Dr. John J.
