That fact alone should ensure that neuroscience will eventually receive top priority in the list of human endeavors. The brain represents the pinnacle of sophistication in the realm of living systems. Yet it is an imperfect organ, whose failures in disease processes lead to the occupation of more than half of all hospital beds and whose variable performance in the healthy state contributes in undetermined degree to the world's social problems. Every significant advance in or understanding of the brain has yielded enormous practical dividends. There is every reason to believe the future holds even greater promise. In the preface to our first edition, we drew attention to the establishment of graduate programs in dozens of universities around the world and the emergence of numerous international journals devoted to interdisciplinary work on the brain. The discoveries that have flowed from this activity have required extensive updating of the details of this book, which is a testimony to the fruitfulness of neuroscience research. Yet the basics remain the same. It is more important than ever that the neuroscientist be presented with the fundamental subdisciplines that together make up the total of brain research in an integrated manner. 804 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This book is designed to usher the reader into the realm of semiotic studies. It analyzes the most important approaches to semiotics as they have developed over the last hundred years out of philosophy, linguistics, psychology, and biology. As a science of sign processes, semiotics investigates all types of com munication and information exchange among human beings, animals, plants, internal systems of organisms, and machines. Thus it encompasses most of the subject areas of the arts and the social sciences, as well as those of biology and medicine. Semiotic inquiry into the conditions, functions, and structures of sign processes is older than anyone scientific discipline. As a result, it is able to make the underlying unity of these disciplines apparent once again without impairing their function as specializations. Semiotics is, above all, research into the theoretical foundations of sign oriented disciplines: that is, it is General Semiotics. Under the name of Zei chenlehre, it has been pursued in the German-speaking countries since the age of the Enlightenment. During the nineteenth century, the systematic inquiry into the functioning of signs was superseded by historical investigations into the origins of signs. This opposition was overcome in the first half of the twentieth century by American Semiotic as well as by various directions of European structuralism working in the tradition of Semiology. Present-day General Semiot ics builds on all these developments. 292 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -As our population continues to age, health professionals are being called on to care for an ever-increasing number of elderly patients. A thorough understanding of what constitutes normal aging versus age-prevalent illness is essential. In addition, the atypical and nonspecific presentation of illness commonly encountered when caring for an older patient must be expected and watched for carefully. In recent years, the health professional has been exposed to an exponentially increasing number of publications attempting to teach geriatric principles. To date, few publications lend themselves to use by the busy practitioner, student, or nurse in search of immediate facts, flow sheets, and clinically applicable data. It was felt that the health professional would benefit greatly from a book based on the concept of a ready-reference 'hand book,' with chapters filled with tables, flow sheets, and listings similar in scope to those in a well-presented lecture series. Our goal was to create a geriatrics handbook that would have value at the bedside as well as in the classroom. It is to this end that the contributors dedicated their efforts. 424 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Something instructive occurred in the process of entitling the present collection. Both editor and publisher sought a simple and succinct rubric for the various pieces of work. But they rapidly and reluctantly reached the consensus that, by either intellectual or marketing criteria, the inser tion of the adjective 'psychological' to qualify the noun 'development' was a communicative necessity. Much to the chagrin of the develop mental psychologist, the term development still connotes-to the world at large as well as the general community of publishers, librarians, and computer archivists-the modernization of nation states. Inside and outside the university, I find that, when asked, 'What are you in terested in ' I am not at liberty to reply, 'The concept of development,' without being absorbed immediately into a discussion of Third World studies. The approach of the present volume should be taken as an exhortation to psychologists to take the genealogy of 'development'' seriously. The history of the discipline is not so different from the histo ry of the word and, as we shall discover, the concern with developmen tal progress cannot easily be separated from the urge for dominion. This volume presents a selection from the recent critical scholarship on psychological development. The emphasis is on rethinking the field of developmental psychology at the level of theory. 340 pp. Englisch.

Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research lnstitut~ on the campus of the University of South Florida, an international symposium, 'The First Annual H. Lee Moffitt Symposium on Cancer Biology and Therapeutics' was held in Tampa, Florida on January 20-22, 1986. In this first symposium we decided to present a broad-based series of topics dealing with the major issues in the field of cancer. These topics ranged from the biochemistry of the cancer cell to the design of antineoplastic agents, through tumor cell heterogeneity, treatment of ltuman neoplasms to immunological aspects of cancer biology and tr~atment. The speakers chosen represented individuals of international acclaim who are very active in the area of cancer research and treatment. The symposium brought together scien tists/physicians from six nations including Austria, Canada, France, Hungary, West Germany, and of course, the United States. The congeniality of the participants promoted the friendly exchange of knowledge which, it is hoped, will greatly hasten the time when successful management of human cancer will become routine. Future symposia in this series will be highly focused and will deal with a single facet of this vast field of cancer research and treatment. Joseph G. Cory, Editor Andor Szentivanyi, Editor University of South Florida, 1986 V ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This volume presents the Proceedings of the H. Lee Moffitt International Syn~osium on Cancer Biology and Therapeutics which was held in Tampa, Florida on January 20, 21, and 22, 1986. 292 pp. Englisch.
