Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Very Good. The Tate Gallery Restaurant was opened in 1972 in the room decorated by Rex Whistler with the legendary murals "In Pursuit of Rare Meats". For over 20 years visitors to the Gallery have enjoyed the best of English cooking in these surroundings. In the early years the substantial traditions of roast beef, steak and kidney pudding, trifle and roly poly dominated the menu, but as tastes changed the restaurant extended its range to include more fish and vegetarian dishes. The old favourites are still much requested by visitors and several hearty recipes dating back to Elizabethan times are included in this selection. Recipes have been tested and adapted for home cooking by food writer Jenny Lindford. The illustrations cover 500 years of mainly British painting on themes of food and entertaining. Recipes include: prawn mousse with smoked salmon; monkfish and avocado roulade with chilli salsa; steak, kidney and mushroom pie; venison pate en croute with cumberland sauce; poached pear with stilton and walnut stuffing; eight layer chocolate torte; and old English sherry trifle. Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Very Good. One of a series introducing major movements in modern art to general readers, students and gallery visitors, this text looks at Cubism, perhaps the seminal movement for the arts of the 20th century, and certainly one of the most complex. Divided between the annual public exhibitions or the emerging network of private galleries, between French and immigrant artists, it was also the product of the decade before the outbreak of war in 1914. Behind the cliched image of "la belle epoque" France was torn by inter-class and international tensions, caught between excitement over the experience of modernity and anxiety about its consequences. The book describes how the artistic avant-garde, and Cubism within it, were formed by that turbulent and complex period. Analyzing paintings by Picasso, Braque, Robert and Sonia Delaunay and their associates, the author traces their exploration of the conventions of pictorial representation in the interests both of reflection on the experience of modernity, and of critical resistance to its seductions. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Very Good. The diverse and complex development of the art museum is nowhere more richly illustrated than through the architectural evolution of the four Tate galleries. Markedly different in location and appearance, Tate Britain, Tate Liverpool, Tate St Ives and Tate Modern nevertheless share certain features: their waterside settings, their distance from fashionable centres and their role in the regeneration of their neighbourhoods. In this illustrated book Helen Searing traces the architectural history of each site, not only focusing on the buildings themselves but also illuminating the artistic, political and cultural context of their conception and growth. They were known for controversially rebelling against the classical academic painting conventions of the day in favour of a meeting of medieval romanticism and a new realism, and were inspired by theories of John Ruskin who urged artists to 'go to nature', resulting in subject matter predominantly dealing with religious themes, love, death, and subjects from literature and poetry. The principal members of the group were William Holman Hunt, John Everett Millais, and Dante Gabriel Rossetti who all produced seminal and well-loved paintings such as "The Awakening Conscience" (1853), "Ophelia" (1851-2) and "The Beloved" (1855-6) respectively. Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Very Good. Surrealism was one of the most interesting and influential at movements of the 20th century. A collective adventure begun by a small group of intellectuals in Paris in the early 1920s, amongst them Max Ernst, Rene Magritte and Salvador Dali, its influence was felt through the rest of continental Europe and in Britain, the Americas, Mexico and Japan. This volume offers insights into the complexities of the surrealist imagination. It documents how the artists met, the relationship of surrealism to dada, and the influences that informed the movement, particularly the work of Sigmund Freud. The position of the women, as surrealist subject-matter as well as artists in their own right, is examined. There is close analysis of individual works, many of them found from the Tate Gallery collection. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

The Mondrian collection in the Gemeentenmuseum is particularly strong on the early works, when the artist painted in the style of the Hague school. Mondrian's style changed dramatically in his forties, after his encounter between 1908 and 1911 with van Gogh, Pointillism and then Cubism. A central feature in the exhibition and catalogue will be the group of drawings and paintings of trees. These show the impact of Cubism on Mondrian's work after 1911 and exemplify the transition from naturalism to a more abstract depiction based on a linear scaffold of arcs and straight lines. A group of later works made during an entirely abstract style based on planes of primary colours and linear grids. By the early 1920s all naturalistic references are removed. This new abstract reality, based on Mondrian's writings on "neo-plasticism", was refined throughout the 1920s and 1930s. The final images in the exhibition coincide with the artist's departure from Europe to America. This exhibition catalogue opens with essays from the selectors of the exhibition, the artist Bridget Riley, Sean Rainbird of the Tate Gallery and Hans Janssen from the Gemeentemuseum. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Very Good. Judged by the standards of his own time, the career of John Everett Millais (1829-96) was an unqualified success. Beginning as a child prodigy, he entered the Royal Academy Schools aged 11, and along with Holman Hunt and Rossetti was a founding member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. The first Pre-Raphaelite picture he produced, The Carpenter's Shop, had a dramatic effect on the critics; Charles Dickens described his portrayal of the child Christ as a 'hideous, wry-necked, blubbering, red-haired boy in a night-gown.' Millais later became the quintessential English gentleman artist, a Baronet and president of the Royal Academy, producing some of the most famous images of the age. At the time of his death, however, there were some who believed that Millais had betrayed his extraordinary talent and vision by pandering to popular taste for the false rewards of money, status and Victorian respectability. In more recent times, Millais's career, after the disbanding of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, has been presented largely as an anti-climax. Yet it is these imbalances and diverse viewpoints that make a study of Millais so compelling. Author Christine Riding analyses his artistic career, his critics and his audience, exploring the broader issues which preoccupied Victorian Britain on the subject of art itself. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
