For over 20 years visitors to the Gallery have enjoyed the best of English cooking in these surroundings. In the early years the substantial traditions of roast beef, steak and kidney pudding, trifle and roly poly dominated the menu, but as tastes changed the restaurant extended its range to include more fish and vegetarian dishes. The old favourites are still much requested by visitors and several hearty recipes dating back to Elizabethan times are included in this selection. Mondrian's style changed dramatically in his forties, after his encounter between 1908 and 1911 with van Gogh, Pointillism and then Cubism. A central feature in the exhibition and catalogue will be the group of drawings and paintings of trees. These show the impact of Cubism on Mondrian's work after 1911 and exemplify the transition from naturalism to a more abstract depiction based on a linear scaffold of arcs and straight lines. A group of later works made during an entirely abstract style based on planes of primary colours and linear grids. By the early 1920s all naturalistic references are removed. This new abstract reality, based on Mondrian's writings on "neo-plasticism", was refined throughout the 1920s and 1930s. The final images in the exhibition coincide with the artist's departure from Europe to America. Beginning as a child prodigy, he entered the Royal Academy Schools aged 11, and along with Holman Hunt and Rossetti was a founding member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. The first Pre-Raphaelite picture he produced, The Carpenter's Shop, had a dramatic effect on the critics; Charles Dickens described his portrayal of the child Christ as a 'hideous, wry-necked, blubbering, red-haired boy in a night-gown.' Millais later became the quintessential English gentleman artist, a Baronet and president of the Royal Academy, producing some of the most famous images of the age. At the time of his death, however, there were some who believed that Millais had betrayed his extraordinary talent and vision by pandering to popular taste for the false rewards of money, status and Victorian respectability. In more recent times, Millais's career, after the disbanding of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, has been presented largely as an anti-climax. Yet it is these imbalances and diverse viewpoints that make a study of Millais so compelling. Author Christine Riding analyses his artistic career, his critics and his audience, exploring the broader issues which preoccupied Victorian Britain on the subject of art itself.
