Cambridge, Mass. : MIT Press, 1990, xiv, 223pp., very good dust-jacket, minor tear at top edge, very good gray cloth, but front endpaper and half-title cut 3cm at top to remove previous owner's name. FROM THE DUST-JACKET : "Ranging all the way from the secrets of life to the mythological significance of one big, dark bird, from a children's hospital in Africa to German concentration camps, from the mysteries of biochemistry to the paradoxes of human sexuality and eroticism, from experimental immunology to the elusive tranquility of a Jerusalem evening, this book is facinating, challenging, deep, and sometimes fun reading" (Amos Oz). 9780262111553 ISBN 0262111551.

badly stained soiled and damaged dust-jacket (probably damaged while separated from the book), very good gray cloth, a few minor small bubbles on rear cover. HABERMAS, JÜRGEN. Moral consciousness and communicative action. Translated by Christian Lenhardt and Shierry Weber Nicholsen ; introduction by Thomas McCarthy. Cambridge, Mass: MIT Press, 1990, xiii, 225pp., . Studies in contemporary German social thought. - This long-awaited book sets out the implications of Habermas's theory of communicative action for moral theory. "Discourse ethics" attempts to reconstruct a moral point of view from which normative claims can be impartially judged. The theory of justice it develops replaces Kant's categorical imperative with a procedure of justification based on reasoned agreement among participants in practical discourse. Habermas connects communicative ethics to the theory of social action via an examination of research in the social psychology of moral and interpersonal development. He aims to show that our basic moral intuitions spring from something deeper and more universal than contingent features of our tradition, namely from normative presuppositions of social interaction that belong to the repertoire of competent agents in any society. - CONTENTS: Introduction -- Philosophy As Stand-In And Interpreter -- Reconstruction And Interpretation In The Social Sciences -- Discourse Ethics: Notes On A Program Of Philosophical Justification -- Moral Consciousness And Communicative Action -- Morality And Ethical Life: Does Hegel's Critique Of Kant Apply To Discourse Ethics? 9780262081924 ISBN 026208192X.

Trade Paperback. Condizione: Used - Very Good. Ernest Cormier (1885-1980) has long been regarded in Canada as the mostoutstanding architect of his generation. This fully illustrated, detailed analysisof his pavilion at the Universit? de Montr?al is the first to clearly establishCormier's work as a significant part of an international movement in which NorthAmerican and European influences converge.Among Cormier's major buildings whichinclude the Montr?al Criminal Courthouse Annex, the Supreme Court of Canada, and hisown house, the main pavilion at the Universit? de Montr?al pioneered modeminstitutional building in Qu?bec. Today it stands as a landmark work of 1920sarchitecture whose vast scale was influenced by the Chicago Tribune Competitionrather than by European issues of rationalist form. The essays also discuss Cormier'searly training as an engineer and his elegant and skillful use of such modemmaterials as reinforced concrete and of yellow American-made glazed brick in thecreation of a personal monumental vocabulary that ushered Canadian architecture intoa new era. Included in the more than 100 illustrations is a magnificent currentphotographic survey of the main pavilion by Gabor Szilasi.Isabelle Gournay is agraduate of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Hardcover. Condizione: Used - Very Good. The Independent Group, or the IG, as it was called, is best known for having launched Pop Art. But the young artists, architects, and critics who met informally at London's Institute of Contemporary Arts in the early 1950s were actually embarked on a far more subversive and constructive mission than the founding of an art movement. Street-smart, anti-academic, and iconoclastic, they embraced Hollywood and Madison Avenue and rejected the traditional dichotomies between high and low culture, British and American values. They used their meetings and exhibitions to challenge the official modernist assumptions of British aesthetics and to advocate instead a media-based, consumer-based aesthetics of change and inclusiveness - an aesthetics of plenty. In doing so they drew upon Dadaist, Futurist, and Surrealist strategies to invigorate their alternative version of modernism - a version that today can be said to have insinuated the terms of postmodernism. This book provides the first comprehensive view of the IG's aims and significance. The texts and illustrations fully represent the achievements of its leaders, including artists Richard Hamilton and Eduardo Paolozzi, architects Alison and Peter Smithson, and critics Lawrence Alloway and Reyner Banham. The historic exhibitions that publicized the ideas of IG members are also documented - 'Parallel of Life and Art,' 'Man, Machine and Motions,' 'This Is Tomorrow,' and 'An Exhibit.' Above all, the book emphasizes the interaction between the exhibitions, discussions, art and writings of IG members, showing the ways in which they established a new aesthetic horizon.David Robbins is a freelance writer and editor in Berkeley, California.
