Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. xi+184 pages with frontispiece map, facsimiles, plates, tables, appendixes, bibliography and index. Royal octavo (9 1/2" x 6 1.4") bound in original publisher's red cloth with gilt lettering to spine and pictorial map to cover. First edition. In six chapters, Burkholder examines Baquíjano's family ties; economic and social positions; law studies; early academic successes; first trip to Madrid (and its miserable outcome); and attempts to earn merit as a university professor, as lawyer to various corporations, and as interim crown attorney, all of which came close to failure because of over ambitiousness and goals too highly set. Burkholder seeks to connect personal circumstances and enterprises of Baquíjano with general political developments and to contrast the personal strategy with the particular legal norms and political conceptions of the crown. Drawing on substantial new sources, Burkholder succeeds in illuminating the mechanisms and problems that a pretender to an audiencia post had to face if he, a native son, strove for a position in as important a tribunal as that of Lima, avoiding the career schedule. Condition: Remainder mark at heal end pages else near fine.

The rock art of Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, northern Mexico, and West Texas surveyed here constitutes an incomparable visual record of southwest Indian culture, religion, and society. Rock art has an arresting complexity captured here in 32 color plates and nearly 250 photographs, plus numerous line drawings. The illustrations include detailed depictions of abstract elements and of such life~forms as human figures, anthropomorphic supernatural beings, quadrupeds, birds, and snakes. This abundant photographic record brings together in one volume petroglyphs and rock paintings that are scattered over thousands of miles of desert and mesa, giving the reader an overview of Indian rock art that would be nearly impossible to achieve in the field. Rock carvings and paintings are important sources in the archaeological and historical interpretation of southwest Indians. Rock art reflects the cosmic and mythic orientation of the culture that produced it, and understanding its function and meaning offers insight into the daily and ceremonial lives of prehistoric peoples~both hunters and gatherers and the Hohokam, Anasazi, Mogollon, and Fremont cultures~and the Pueblo, Navajo, and Apache Indians. Culturally significant events such as the shift in prehistoric times from spear and atlatl to the bow, or, in the historic period, the introduction of the horse into the Southwest, are recorded in rock art. Indian Rock Art of the Southwest examines from an archaeological perspective the rich legacy of stone drawings and carvings preserved throughout the Southwest. Professional and amateur archaeologists and historians, as well aso the genaral reader with an interest in Indian art, will find this volume a valuable resource.
