Force, kann sie doch als Sinnbild für das Wahrwerden des amerikanischen Traums gelten: Geboren als Tochter eines Lebesmittelhändlers (Taufname: Julianna Reiser), erzogen in einer christlichen Mädchenschule, arbeitete sie ab 1914 als Privatsekretärin von Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, die sie mit der Organisation der von ihr veranstalteten Kunstausstellungen beauftragte. 1930 wurde "Juliana", wie sie in New York genannt wurde, Direktorin des von Vanderbilt Whitney gegründeten Whitney Museum of American Art.

Diese Position nutzte er aus, um die Idee des Yosemite National Park zu propagieren. Als Herausgeber überzeugte er Präseident Ulysses S. Grant, seine Memoiren niederzuschreiben. Auch setzte er sich für ein Urheberrecht der Autoren ein. 1920-1921 war er Botschafter der U.S.A. in Italien.
