Over the past few decades, the pictorial turn in the natural sciences, prompted by the computer's capacity to produce visual representations, has generated considerable theoretical interest. Poised between their materiality and the abstract level they are meant to convey, scientific images are always intersections of form and meaning. Benoit Mandelbrot (1924-2010), one of the best-known producers of digital images in scientific and industrial research, was particularly curious about the ways in which the materiality of scientific representation was able to influence the development of the ideas and abstractions the images embodied. Using images and objects found in Mandelbrot s office, this book questions the relationship between the visual and scientific reasoning in fractal geometry and chaos theory, among the most popular fields to use digital scientific imagery in the past century. These hitherto unpublished materials offer new connections between the material world and that of mathematical ideas. NEW.

Hardcover. Orange clothboards with gold gilt lettering on spine, peach and color illustrated dust jacket, illustrated flyleaves, 416 pp. 155 color plates, numeorus bw plates. "Through a series of eleven essays, five of which are by Tamara Preaud, archivist at the Manufacture Nationale de Serves, this book explores the life and career of Alexandre Brongniart and the work produced at Serves during his tenure. Appointed director of the Sevres manufactory in 1800, Brongniart was a gifted scientist and teacher and an enlightened administrator who reorganized the factory's marketing practices. He also encouraged the development of technical innovations in many areas, from the formulation of clays and glazes to the design and construction of kilns at Sevres, and he established a workship for painting on glass and the making of stained glass. Recognizing the great debt owed by the decorative arts to past artists, he also founded a ceramics museum that would serve as both inspiration for the Sevres artists and a record of their achievements. Brongniart's books and other publications established new standards for the study and analysis of the ceramic arts. To all these ends, he traveled widely, meeting with scientists, craftsmen, and connoisseurs and promoting the Sevres accomplishments. The catalogue section of the book presents more than 100 radiant drawings from the Sevres archives, with detailed descriptions and analyses by Ms. Preaud. In addition, there are many examples of undecorated porcelain forms as well as a rich selection of finished pieces that represent the glory of Sevres production under Brongniart's discerning leadership." - dust jacket description.
