Libro Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. Jacket by Karsh and the Barcelona Museum (illustratore). 1st Edition. First edition, first impression. Some edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, corners very slightly rubbed, spine faded, not price clipped (£6.95), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy. 511pp. A scholarly, passionate and brilliantly written biography of Pablo Picasso by Patrick O'Brian (1914-2000), the famous author of the much loved Aubrey-Maturin series of historic naval stories. Patrick O'Brian's outstanding biography of Picasso explores comprehensively the life of this awe inspiring artist. Enormously productive and hugely successful, Picasso continues to attract avid, insatiable public interest. O'Brian was a close friend and a neighbour of Picasso's, and the book reflects the closeness of their friendship and the immense erudition and warm wit of Patrick O'Brian. The man that emerges from the pages is full of contradictions, hard yet tender, mean yet generous, affectionate but cold, professing communism but retaining an essentially Catholic mentality, private despite his relish of fame. Critically, O'Brian's is the only biography to fully appreciate the distinctly Mediterranean origins of Picasso's character and art. Sex and money, eating and drinking, friends and quarrels, comedies and tragedies, suicides and wars tumble over each other in the vast chaos of Picasso's experience, He was 'a man almost as lonely as the sun, but one who glowed with much the same fierce, burning life'. Quite a scarce book, a classic.

Original Wraps. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. An Uncorrected Proof Copy of the true first edition, published in plain red paper covers. Illustrated with eight pages of black and white photographs as in the published version of the book. ***Very good in red paper covers, with a plain spine and a paper title label on the front cover. The covers are clean and largely undamaged - just inevitably creased at the edges. No tears to the thin paper covers. With the initials 'W.S.Y' in ink on the front cover. There are some marks to the bottom edge of the page block. Internally also very good with no inscriptions. Pages clean, but with some creasing, especially at the bottom edge near the spine. No spine lean. Spine tight. No dustwrapper - it is unclear whether this proof copy would have had one. ***230mm x 147mm. 511 pages including a very detailed 19-page Index at the back of the book. ***'This is the first complete life to appear in English of the most famous painter of the twentieth century, indeed one of the most famous in the history of European art. Yet, as Patrick O'Brian shows in this masterly biography, Picasso was a very private person ---- Besides a lifetimes' gratitude and admiration for the painter's work, he is equipped with a first-hand knowledge of the life of the north western Mediterranean in which Picasso was bred, and with a rare familiarity with the language and culture, Spanish, French and Catalan, in which he was rooted. It is characteristic of his perceptions that he traces one source of Picasso's secretiveness and deviousness to the rules of self-preservation learned the hard way under the savagely repressive regime of the late nineteenth century Spain.' (Quote taken from the dustwrapper of the published first edition) ***A very uncommon Uncorrected Proof Copy of the true first edition in the original plain red paper covers. Of interest to collectors of Patrick O'Brian first editions and of the life and work of Pablo Picasso. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.***.
