[From the dust jacket] How can anthropology, with its emphasis on local knowledge and local meaning, contribute to the understanding of politics in complex, modern societies? This book employs vivid ethnographic data from one village in an effort to understand broader problems in the troubled politics of Sri Lanka. In particular it investigates two related phenomena which lie behind the growing crisis of Sri Lanka's democratic institutions: the high degree of political participation in rural areas and the tenacious hold of Sinhala Buddhist nationalism among the country's majority population. A compelling account of village politics in the early 1980s is complemented by a description of village Buddhism and the attempted re-creation of a local sense of community through the rituals and symbols of Buddhist nationalism. These events are then interpreted in the context of the broad processes of material and cultural change in the colonial and post-colonial era. Nationalism, so often represented as the working out of old, primordial forces, is instead seen as a product of recent change, while party politics are to some extent a continuation of a much older pattern, which can be discerned in local relations with the colonial and pre-colonial State. The book provides a rare account of the local roots of nationalist feeling, as well as challenging received ideas in the ethnography of politics. It will be of interest to anthropologists, political scientists, and anyone concerned with problems of politics, history, culture, and identity both in South Asia and in all post-colonial societies. Jonathan Spencer has taught at the University of Sussex and the London School of Economics. He is now a lecturer in Social Anthropology at the University of Edinburgh.
