Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good+. Illustrated by Constance Fogler (illustratore). 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Cover Art; This book is in Near Fine condition and has a Very Good+ dust jacket. The book and its contents are in mostly clean, bright condition. The text pages are clean and bright. The dust jacket is generally clean and brigh, but has some rubbing and nicking to the spine ends and corners, along with some beginning toning to the white portions. This is a book of essays, including: On Paul Goodman, Approaching Artaud, Fascinating Fascism, Under the Sign of Saturn, Syberberg's Hitler, Remembering Barthes, and, Mind as Passion. This particular book was printed in a small initial run. "Susan Sontag (January 16, 1933 December 28, 2004) was an American writer, film-maker, teacher, and political activist. She published her first major work, the essay "Notes on 'Camp'", in 1964. Her best-known works include On Photography, Against Interpretation, Styles of Radical Will, The Way We Live Now, Illness as Metaphor, Regarding the Pain of Others, The Volcano Lover, and In America. Sontag was active in writing and speaking about, or travelling to, areas of conflict, including during the Vietnam War and the Siege of Sarajevo. She wrote extensively about photography, culture and media, AIDS and illness, human rights, and communism and leftist ideology. Although her essays and speeches sometimes drew controversy, she has been described as "one of the most influential critics of her generation." " (from Wikipedia).

Libro Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First printing, 1980. Bright, clean & tight copy, unread, in Fine condition. "Susan Sontag's essays have, in one form or another, been commentaries on the relation between moral and aesthetic ideas--that great question of modern culture, that hardest of hard cases. But, as Sontag has said, she is interested only in hard cases. And they abound in this new collection of essays, the first since Styles of Radical Will in 1969, which brings together her most important critical writing of the last decade. [] Sontag has always been mistrustful of the reigning beliefs, whether they be aesthetic or political. 'The most interesting ideas,' she writes in 'Women, the Arts, and the Politics of Culture,' 'are heresies.' In a period in which the avant-garde taste which she championed in the 1960's has become dominant, Sontag takes a critical, tough-minded look at our culture that may surprise some people. Writing on Antonin Artaud, she confronts the case of a great modernist whose work, by virtue of having become 'a classic,' has been neutralized. In her famous essay on Leni Riefenstahl, Sontag brilliantly examines fascist aesthetics. The subject is taken up again in Sontag's discussion of Hans-Jurgen Syberberg's film Hitler, and of the work of Elias Canetti. The famous exchange on fascism and feminism is also included here. [] Susan Sontag is the most important and interesting critic of our times. It is particularly fitting that the title essay of this collection, 'Under the Sign of Saturn,' should be a discussion of Walter Benjamin, the most important critic of the pre-war period and the writer to whom Sontag can be most relevantly compared. Whether Sontag is treating the arts, politics, film, or feminism, she is always essential reading." [jacket copy] "In this collection, Sontag masters all she chooses to survey. She is a noble appreciator. Integrity, wholeness, large-sighted vision are intrinsic to Sontag's care for the intellectual life. UNDER THE SIGN OF SATURN includes two long articles that belong together: the famed, polemical, whipping of Leni Riefenstahl's laundered reputation and camp cult of fascist art, and her stunning analysis of Hans-Jürgen Syberberg's Hitler, a Film from Germany. After this feast, I am eager for her thoughts on anything."--Chicago Sun-Times. "No one has written more passionately about Antonin Artaud . . . Nor has anyone before Sontag taken the pains to demolish so thoroughly Hitler's favorite moviemaker, Leni Riefenstahl. This is one of the crack essays in the book."--Chicago Tribune. Fine hardcover w/brilliant corners & crisp pages, a square & tight binding, shows minor shelfwear & slightly foxed edges, o/w unmarked, wrapped in an intact NF jacket. Quite presentable.
