Defining androgyny as fully realized humanity, or humankindness, Robert Kimbrough first addresses myths of androgyny and locates the androgynous vision in sixteenth-century thought. Then, ranging widely throughout the Shakespearean canon, Kimbrough discusses the androgynous stirrings of youth found in the boy-girl disguises of the comedies, including As You Like It and Twelfth Night, and the attempts of more mature protagonists to cross gender barriers in Julius Caesar, Othello, and especially Macbeth. Finally, Kimbrough explores Shakespeare's presentation of the problems of parenthood and old age in King Lear, and concludes with a discussion of The Tempest as a play of final androgynous synthesis in humankindness.
