It is the story of Eduard Schulte, the man who first passed on to the outside world the unbelievable news that Hitler's extermination of the Jews had begun~and in so doing, tried to prevent the murder of millions of people. Eduard Schulte was one of Germany's top industrial leaders, but he was passionately opposed to Hitler and everything the Nazis represented. He decided to pass on information to the Allies in the hope that this might hasten Hitler's defeat and restore decency in a postwar German government. Traveling frequently from Germany to Switzerland, he brought the Allies news of German troop movements and of the muchfeared V~2 rocket program. But his outstanding contribution was his effort in July 1942 to alert the British and American governments to the Nazi plan for genocide. Breaking the Silence reveals the full story of how Allied government officials ignored Schulte's valuable information. In 1943 Schulte became the subject of a Gestapo investigation. Alerted by friends in German Military Intelligence, he fled to Switzerland in a dramatic and dangerous escape. While living out the war in Switzerland he worked with Allen Dulles and a small group of pro~Allied Germans to help gather and analyze intelligence. Despite his efforts on behalf of the Allies, Schulte was denied a major role in rebuilding his country by the postwar U.S. Army of Occupation bureaucracy. This book contains important new information about the efforts Schulte and others made to prevent the Holocaust, and about intelligence activities during World War II. A fascinating account of personal heroism, this is also a moving story of a man caught up in the ancient struggle between patriotism and conscience.
