For this purpose he has chosen the primordial image of The Great Mother~an image at work within the human psyche, which finds outward expression in the ritual, mythology, and art of early man and in the dreams, fantasies, and creative works of both the sound and the sick man of our own day. The text is allusive in the tradition of The Golden Bough, deriving material from many cultures and periods. The illustrations range from the stone carvings of the Palaeolithic cave man to the sculptures of Epstein and Moore. The book will interest and help the general reader as well as the psychologist and student of art and symbolism. "Neumann's creative intuition has enabled him to read in these records of the past a content and meaning that throws a beam of light on the psychological history of mankind. They are illumined by his exposition so that not only do they become comprehensible, but, what is more important, they furnish a most valuable means of understanding the significance of the developmental stages through which every individual must pass in the course of his life, if he is to achieve separation from the maternal unconscious and attain a truly self~conscious individuality. While the whole book is enormously interesting and valuable for the general reader, it carries an especial value for the student and practitioner of depth psychology. Anyone who takes the trouble to read it will find his conception of psychic life broadened and his grasp of history clarified, in a way that is both stimulating and enlightening."~M. Esther Harding, Journal of Analytical Psychology. "For palaeolithic man, every day was Mother's Day."~Aldous Huxley, Esquire.

Trade Paperback. Condizione: Fine. Braun, Andor - Design (illustratore). 1974 Second Printing. 379 Pages of Text plus 185 black and white plates. Previous owner's name on the front endpaper. The first Princeton paperback edition was released in 1972. This edition is the 1974 Second Printing. Neumann examines how the Feminine has been experienced and expressed in many cultures from prehistory to our own time. Appearing as goddess and demon, gate and pillar, garden and tree, hovering sky and containing vessel, the Feminine is seen as an essential factor in the dialectical relation of individual consciousness, symbolized by the child, to the ungraspable matrix, symbolized by the Great Mother.
