Gontarski. notes to the introduction. translator's note. french literature. theatrics. english literature. stage & screen. ~ Just before he wrote the classic Waiting for Godot, Samuel Beckett wrote another play, entitled ELEUTHERIA. The legend runs that Suzanne Descheveaux~Dumesnil, Beckett's wife, presented the great French director Roger Blin with his choice of two plays: one, Waiting for Godot and the other~ELEUTHERIA. The play with five actors and two acts won won out over the one with seventeen characters and elaborate, and numerous, scene changes. ELEUTHERIA then disappeared for some forty years, until the day Samuel Beckett placed a manuscript into the hands of his old friend and original American publisher, Barney Rossel, and told him it was his. As Beckett scholars, among them James Knowlson and John Spurling, have noted, elements in ELEUTHERIA prefigure many of the themes and characters of Beckett's most important works. Beyond the historical interest of this "lost" work by one of the century's great writers, there is the mesmerizing quality of the master playwright's language. His unmatched Gaelic wit and grace is evident even in this, perhaps the least~known of his completed works. The Beckett Estate~represented by Jerome Lindon, also publisher of Editions de Minuit, maintained ELEUTHERIA should never be published or produced, and so only a very few scholars had access to the work in manuscript form. In January of 1995 Barney Rossel, together with the publishers of Four Walls Eight Windows, finally received the Estate's permission to publish the play. Lindon, who to this day maintains he was "forced" into doing so, then promptly published the play in its orginal French version. SAMUEL BECKETT was born in Foxrock, near Dublin, in 1906. He moved to Paris as a young man, where he began writing both prose and poetry. During the war he participated in the Resistance. Until 1945 Beckett wrote in English, but thereafter began to write directly in French, and most of his major work was written in his adopted tongue. In 1969 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. His major works include Waiting for Godot, which has sold over a million copies and is generally acknowledged as one of the most important plays ever written. Beckett's last work, Stirrings Still, published shortly before his death in 1989, was dedicated to Barney Rossel.

Hardcover. Condizione: As New. Condizione sovraccoperta: As New. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing May 1995. Translated by Michael Brodsky. "Samuel Beckett's ELEUTHERIA was written in French from January to March 1947 (almost two years before Waiting for Godot) and has never been published, performed, or translated into English. [circa 1980] It is one of the 'trunk manuscripts that Beckett once said almost outnumber the published works. However, it differs from other unpublished dramatic writing---at least that about which anything is known---in being complete, and having been released for circulation among Paris theater producers. An experimental work in its own right and a forerunner of the later plays."---Knowlson & Pilling. "ELEUTHERIA disappeared for some forty years, until the day Samuel Beckett placed a manuscript into the hands of his old friend and original American publisher, Barney Rosset, and told him it was his. Beyond the historical interest of this 'lost' work by one of the century's great writers, there is the mesmerizing quality of the master playwright's language. His unmatched Gaelic wit and grace is evident even in this, perhaps the least-known of his completed works. In January of 1995 Barney Rosset, together with the publishers of Four Walls Eight Windows, finally received the Beckett Estate's permission to publish the play [in this Foxrock edition]."
