Paperback. Condizione: Good. 751 pages. Cover worn. Text tannedAstudy of the processes of discovery, invention, imagination and creativity in humor, scienc e, and the arts. It lays out Koestler's attempt to develop an ela borate general theory of human creativity. From describing and co mparing many different examples of invention and discovery, Koest ler concludes that they all share a common pattern which he terms bisociation--A blending of elements drawn from of two previously unrelated matrices of thought into a new matrix of meaning by wa y of a process involving comparison, abstraction and categorizati on, analogies and metaphors. He regards many different mental phe nomena based on comparison (such as analogies, metaphors, parable s, allegories, jokes, identification, role-playing, acting, perso nification, anthropomorphism etc.), as special cases of bisociati on.

This book has attracted a cult following since its original 1964 publication. It set the stage for much of the "New Age" literature of the following decades. Koestler draws analogies between human creativity and evolution in nature, seeing them as two different aspects of a single process. Koestler's writing is eminently readable and still highly topical three decades later. This is the first of Koestler's big three serious science books. The second is "The Sleepwalkers", on the contribution of Copernicus, Kepler and Galileo. The third is "The Ghost in the Machine", which contains a critique of behaviorist psychology and Koestler's theory to account for the apparent self-destructiveness of human nature. "The Act of Creation" offers a theory to account for creative synthesis. The model is fleshed out with a great deal of information ranging from the religions of the world to a theory about the nervous system to account for the build-up of tension and its discharge at the puchline of a joke. A fascinating read; it gives glimpses and answers through an integrated body of research and a graceful and insightful fireside chat about it all. One of my all-time favourite books. First Edition Thus (1967), First Printing, so stated.

Libro
Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 4th Printing. 4th Printing. Hardcover. Bound in quarter blue buckram with black cloth boards. Copper foil lettering on the spine. The Act of Creation begins where this view ceases to be true. Koestler affirms that all creatures have the capacity for creative activity, frequently suppressed by the automatic routines of thought and behavior that dominate their lives. The study of psychology has offered little in the way of an explanation of the creative process, and Koestler suggests that we are at our most creative when rational thought is suspended - for example in dreams and trance-like states. Then the mind is capable of receiving inspiration and insight.Taking humor as his starting point, Koestler examines what he terms 'bisociative' thinking - the creative leap made by the mind that gives rise to new and startling perceptions and glimpses of reality. From here he assesses the workings of the mind of the scientific or artistic genius. The general reader as well as the reader with a deeper knowledge of the topics covered will find this richly documented study of creativity both illuminating and compelling. 751pp. Blue dustjacket with white spine and black and white text.CONDITION: Light shelf wear. Previous owner name on flyleaf. Pages are crisp and clean. Binding and text block are tight. Dustjacket has moderate rubbing and heavy edge wear. Full refund if not satisfied.
