Frontispiece is a portrait of the Reverend Samuel Smith, author of the annotations. Text is in dual columns with annotation at the foot within Scriptural text. CONDITION: Cover shows considerable wear with missing pieces of leather binding, pictured. Backstrip has eroded, yet binding is sound. Outer joints are cracked, yet boards are still well affixed with inner hinge reinforced cloth. Leaves have lightly toned with only occasional foxing or discoloration. Unmarked except for previous owner's name written on the title page in dipped ink, as well as on the front pastedown, (dated 1788) along with corresponding bookplate. Engravings and fold-out maps are beautiful. An heirloom-worthy copy, fully readable with gentle care. Containing 234 plates and three maps as called for, The plates and maps are in good+ order. Damage and loss to pp 123/124 otherwise text clean and bright and in very good order. On the reverse of the frontis piece in a seventeenth/eighteenth century hand a statistical account of the Bible - numbers of chapters, verses, words and letters (total 3,566,480) etc. etc. - a note at the end says "Three years was taken to complete this account" (probably the work of Thomas Addenbrooke) the frontis piece is by G. Freman engraved by J. Kip, the printed title page has the first or early ownership of Thomas Addenbrooke (the following page gives a list of the sculptures and discourses with the names of the patrons of same, the dedication by Richard Blome is to the Worshipful Jeffrey Jeffreys, followed by the Preface to the Reader, in all 10 pages of unpaginated front matter followed by 424 pages paginated (illustrations not included in pagination).
