'Dr. Snodgrass traces the development of arms and armour in Greece from Mycenae to Macedon. From the earliest times of which we have any knowledge, the most important part in Hellenic warfare was played by the hoplite. This book deals with two types of armour, the bronze armour of the elite (the hoplite and officers), and the quilted arbor of the light infantry. (?) The author devotes practically his entire attention to the bronze armour and the weapons that accompanied it, since no actual examples of the quilted armour have survived. (?) The book is well organised, well illustrated and documented, and it is an informative study. Dr. Snodgrass gives an up-to-date account of the armaments that have survived, and he interprets the part that they played in military activities during some twelve centuries.? (STEPHEN V. GRANSCAY in Archaeology, 1969, p.155). Antiquarian.
