Prima edizione
First edition and printing in English, translated by Lysander Kemp. With two decorations in a native Mexican motif. 8vo, in the original red cloth, the upper cover with central decorative device repeated from one of those in the book embossed in purple, the spine lettered in purple and green, in the pink paper dustjacket decorated in a similar style. 74pp. A very fine copy, with only the most trivial evidence of shelving or age, both jacket and book beautifully preserved. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH AND AN OUTSTANDING COPY of Fuentes novel known for its remarkable "dreamlike" themes and complex character carried out entirely in second-person narration. This second person point of view and and use of "you" brings the reader directly into the story. Since its initial publication AURA has been an ongoing source of controversy in Mexico and Latin America. *Aura* is preoccupied with the place and persistence of the sacred in modern Mexico rather than simply the secret abuses of institutional Catholicism. In 2001 a former Mexican interior secretary objected to the book being on the reading list at his daughter's private school, leading to the teacher's dismissal. It was also banned from public high school curricula in Puerto Rico in 2009. These controversies rekindle interest in the story, thus leading to first editions becoming increasingly difficult to find.

Octavo. 74pp. Top of boards a bit sunned else fine in very good price-clipped dust jacket with panel modestly rubbed, spine lightly sunned with short nicks on ends. Briefly Inscribed by Fuentes on the second leaf. A short novel banned from the Puerto Rican school curriculum in the early 2000s due to it containing lewd language.
Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. First American edition. Translated by Lysander Kemp. Octavo. 74pp. Top of boards a bit sunned else fine in very good or better dust jacket with the lower panel moderately soiled and a tiny stray ink mark on the cover. Briefly Inscribed by Fuentes on the second leaf.

[Chicano Literature] FUENTES, Carlos. Aura. New York: Farrar, Straus, and Giroux. 1975. Stated first bi-lingual edition, first printing. Translated by Lysander Kemp. 8vo; 145 pp. Original black cloth board with purple title on spine. Pictorial dust jacket with black and white photograph of Fuentes on back. Mylar wrapping. This magical realism novel was first published in Spanish in 1962 and was a source of much controversy in Mexico at the time due to it's sexual themes. Carlos Fuentes became an acclaimed author in the Latin American Boom literary movement of the 1960s-1970s, he challenged the conventions and expectations of traditional Latin American literature. The Boom generation gained unprecedented popularity in Western Europe and, from there, became globally renowned. The trend is most often characterized by experimental forms and politically engaged content. Fuentes embodies in a marvelous way the myth and the plot, the search, the encounter and the separation, life and death. The story follows the historian, Felipe Montero, as reads a classified ad that makes him relive the story of the dead and, without knowing it, makes him find again his own life story. An integral piece of Latin American magical realist literature. Dust jacket has minor chips to spine and back, not price clipped, covered in mylar. Some minor staining to top edge of a few of the back pages, does not affect text. Text and pages are overall crisp and clear, overall very good condition.
