First Trade Edition. Tall Octavo. 120 pages, 39 pages of black and white illustrations situated at the rear, with an introduction by Dard Hunter, tipped-in printed paper sample as frontispiece, ancient Mesoamerican papers. Von Hagen confronts some important issues while unraveling the history and use of paper in Mesoamerica. One of his most prominent concerns involves the identification of fibers used in the manufacture of these ancient papers; he offers a series of documentary and scientific arguments to conclude that these papers were produced from various species of fig trees (Ficus) rather than the sometimes mentioned maguey plant. The limited edition of this book was chosen by the American Institute of Graphic Art as one of the fifty best books of 1944. A near fine copy bound in pale green-gray clotjh centrally stamped in brown, spine lettering brown, in a near fine pictorial dust jacket lettered in red and black, light rubbing to sdpine ends. A very nice copy.
