This book chronicles his family's return to the East, with stories of important persons of the day, literary and others, and a partial account of a trip to England with his daughters. Black cover with red, gold & blue ltg & illus. 5.5'x7.5' 379 pgs. Remnants of library card slot on back endpaper and board, very faint Dewey Decimal lettering on spine, no other library markings, faded spine with dulled gilt lettering, rubbing, wear, and soil. Front hinge a bit weak.

Book condition: the top edge is dyed green, the other two edges have darkened somewhat, the bottom edge only very slightly; front cover illustration and the lettering are fresh and have nice color, and cover is quite clean; dj is labeled Grosset & Dunlap ( don't know how this happened?) and is in nice condition except for a circa 2 inch tear in the front panel upper corner.

First edition, hardcover, has a faint skew to the binding, a tiny hint of bowing to boards, very slight bumps to spine ends, and a touch of shelfwear to cover corners, otherwise a solid, clean VG+ copy in a Near VG dust jacket, which is clipped at the head of the front flap w/price still present at tail, has bumps with shallow chips to spine ends and corners, some edgewear with a few short tears and small chips, slight sunning to spine, and a touch of rubbing. Jacket is wrapped in a removable Mylar cover.

This is the fourth and final volume of a series of autobiographic chronicles dealing with a group of migratory families. This work is preceded by A Son of the Middle Border (1917), A Daughter of the Middle Border (1921; Winner of the 1922 Pulitzer Prize for Biography), and Trail-Makers of the Middle Border (1926).
