Condizione: 6. in-12, broché, 189 pp. Rare édition originale de ce roman, situé en Oubangui-Chari, une des quatre colonies relevant du Gouvernement Général de l'Afrique Équatoriale Française. Couronné du prix Goncourt 1921, Batouala place René Maran, premier auteur français noir récompensé, au centre d'une polémique que renforce la préface dénonciatrice du colonialisme : "Civilisation, civilisation, orgueil des Européens et leur charnier d'innocents (.) Tu bâtis ton royaume sur des cadavres". Un des 30 exemplaires numérotés sur vergé pur fil Lafuma, seul tirage en grand papier, enrichi d'un important envoi autographe signé de l'auteur à une "chère amie", [Berthe Dété] : « Lorsque j'ai commencé à écrire ce livre, je ne pensais qu'à Bernerette. Plus tard, pendant des mois, afin d'oublier Bernerette qui avait voulu qu'il en fût ainsi, je me suis appliqué à le polir. Depuis, j'ai à tout jamais oublié Bernerette. Mais le fidèle ami que j'ai toujours été pour vous, n'a jamais oublié l'amie à éclipses que vous avez parfois été pour moi". René Maran s'adresse ici à la soeur aînée de son premier amour, Bernerette Dété, fille du graveur Eugène Dété, qui rompit leurs fiançailles, épisode qui est aussi à l'origine d'un autre roman, Un homme pareil aux autres (1944). On joint du même auteur Djouma, chien de brousse (Paris, Albin Michel, 1927, broché, 253 pp.), édition originale également enrichie d'un envoi autographe signé de l'auteur à Berthe Dété, "en témoignage de ma vieille et sincère amitié".
