Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Working in New York one hot summer, Esther Greenwood is on the brink of her future. Yet she is also on the edge of a darkness that makes her world both increasingly unreal and more sharply felt. Plath describes Esther's experience with a searing clarity: the wide-eyed country girls; her sharp-as-nails friend Doreen and her crazed men-friends; hot dinner dances and nights in New York. But it is a vision coloured by breakdown, making this one of the most vivid, troubled novels about the struggle to grow up. A student from Boston wins a guest editorship on a national magazine, and finds a new world at her feet. Her New York life is crowded with possibilities, so the choice of future is overwhelming. She is faced with the perennial problems of morality, behaviour and identity. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. 244pp. Octavo [20.5cm]; illustrated wraps. The Bell Jar chronicles the crack-up of Esther Greenwood: brilliant, beautiful, enormously talented, and successful, but slowly going under -- maybe for the last time. Sylvia Plath masterfully draws the reader into Esther's breakdown with such intensity that Esther's insanity becomes completely real and even rational, as probable and accessible an experience as going to the movies. Such deep penetration into the dark and harrowing corners of the psyche is an extraordinary accomplishment and has made The Bell Jar a haunting American classic. Aggiungi al carrelloCloth. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. SYLVIA PLATH (illustratore). 1st edition, 7th printing. 1st edition, 7th printing, 1971. A Very Good book in a Good dust jacket. 8vo., 296 pp., bound in publishers purple cloth with illustrated black dust jacket, price clipped. Jacket has rubbing & chipping to edges and tips. Previous owners name inside front cover. End papers faded at extreme edges. Dust jacket now protected in mylar sleeve. The Bell Jar is the only novel written by the American writer and poet Sylvia Plath. Originally published under the pseudonym "Victoria Lucas" in 1963, the novel is supposedly semi-autobiographical with the names of places and people changed. The book is often regarded as a roman à clef because the protagonist's descent into mental illness parallels Plath's experiences with what may have been clinical depression or bipolar II disorder. Plath died by suicide a month after its first United Kingdom publication. It was not published in the United States until 1971, in accordance with the wishes of both Plath's ex-husband Ted Hughes and her mother.
