In zwei unterschiedlich nummerierten, alternierenden Kapitelfolgen, die am Ende des Buches konvergieren, werden Oswalds Leben und die Planungen einiger CIA-Agenten und ihrer Verschwörung erzählt, mit der sie Oswald zur Teilnahme am Attentat manipulieren. DeLillo entwirft ein differenziertes Charakterbild von Oswald: Der zwar eigenbrötlerische, aber geistig gesunde und durchaus belesene Außenseiter aus der Bronx habe sich mit seinen Sympathien für den Sowjetkommunismus außerhalb der amerikanischen Gesellschaft gestellt.
