Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. Jacket illustration by john Dawson (illustratore). Signed by author (name only) to the title page. NO ISBN found to copyright page nor to jacket. And we don't have the slightest idea what printing we have here. "Scribners" to bottom of spine of both book and jacket. Book bound in sky-blue cloth with a black fabric spine; NO book-club deboss found. Top corner of jacket front flap clipped, which would USUALLY indicate a "price-clipped" trade edition. NO "book club edition" statement found. Copyright 1992 with no later dates found. There is NO stand-alone capital letter "A" to copyright page. There is NO number line to copyright page. Copyright page does NOT state any edition or printing. Copyright page states "Printed in the United States of America," but also states "Macmillan Publishing Company is part of the Maxwell Communications Group of Companies," while jacket REAR flap states "Copyright 1992 Macmillan Publishing Company, a division of Macmillan, Inc. (New York.)" Could this be the Canadian edition, released by Maxwell Macmillan Canada, Inc., Toronto? Dunning, who ran a bookstore in Denver, writes a murder mystery set among bookstores and bookmen. This one worked pretty well, condemning him to write sequels, most of which felt considerably more contrived. 321 pp., here reduced from $70. Signed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Fourth edition. This fourth printing is signed by John Dunning on the title page. Tough, book-loving Denver homicide detective Cliff Janeway wants to nail Jackie Newton--a suspected psychopath who just barely beat the rap for a series of vagrant killings. Janeway is certain his sleazy, sadistic nemesis is to blame for the recent murder of a down-and-out rare book hunter--and treats Newton to a rather brutal helping of off-duty justice that ultimately costs the overzealous cop his badge. A civilian once more, Janeway now has time to pursue his true passion--the buying and selling of valuable first editions--and to get to the bottom of the unfortunate bookscourts still-unsolved slaying. For somewhere undercover, in the bizarre, cutthroat world of bookmen and collectors, someone is dealing death along with vintage Chandlers and Twains. A fine copy in a near fine price-clipped dust jacket.

Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st printing. Cloth and boards. 321pp. Signed. When this, the first of Dunning's five Cliff Janeway detective novels was published, it was praised far and wide as a superb "bibliomystery," a murder mystery set in the world of collecting and selling rare books. It has stood the test of time in this bookseller's opinion and belongs in the top echelon of what is now a raft of modern bibliomysteries. The succeeding Janeway novels also satisfy the bibliomaniac. The dj for this title is one of my personal all-time favorites. Fine in fine dj. PLUS signed, limited copies of the booklets Dunning wrote for antiquarian book fairs: BOOKSCOUT (19pp, signed, fine, for Midwestern Book Fair in Chicago) and THE BOOKMAN'S LIMERICKS (20pp, signed, fine, for Seattle Antiquarian Bookfair). Both have on the back page the bookseller's label of Dinkytown Books, Minneapolis.
