Your Cat is Dead received widespread critical acclaim and near fanatical reader devotion. The stage version of the novel was equally successful and there are still over 200 new productions of it staged every year. Now, for the first time in a decade, James Kirkwood's much-loved black humor comic novel of manners and escalating disaster returns to bewitch and beguile a new generation. . .See photos for additional content. . .

Manoscritto / Collezionismo cartaceo
Draft script for the 1975 play, which premiered on April 7 at the John Golden Theatre in New York. Laid in with the script are several handwritten pages regarding promotional materials for the play. Also became the basis for the 2002 film directed by and starring Steve Guttenberg. After coming home to find a muscular Italian burglar in the process of robbing his apartment, a depressed young actor ties the burglar to his kitchen sink and attempts to torment the man, but finds himself forming an intensifying bond with his robber instead. Written by Kirkwood and published as a novel in 1972, then eventually produced for the stage in 1975 (the script on offer here), and for film in 2002. Set in New York. Red titled Studio Duplicating Service wrappers with credits for playwright James Kirkwood. Title page present, with credits for playwright James Kirkwood. 111 leaves, with last page of text numbered 2-52. Spirit duplication, rectos only. Pages Near Fine, wrapper Very Good plus, bound with a gold brad.

22 x 13 7/8"; theater broadside; modest shelfwear with a couple of short closed tears.~~Two main characters: a depressed actor (Jimmy) and a cat burglar (Vito). After a rocky start (Jimmy beats up Vito) the two find themselves attracted sexually, and ultimately run away together. The play, adopted from Kirkwood's novel of the same name, ran for only 16 performances on Broadway in 1976. The following year Kirkwood won a Tony Award for A Chorus Line and in his acceptance speech said "As A Chorus Line was previewing at the Newman Theater, I had a little diddy open on Broadway about a month before called P.S. Your Cat Is Dead. It was greeted by some of the critics as if I'd dramatized the Black Plague. It's been rewritten. It's got a whole new life on the coast, so it's alive and well."~~This poster is from the play's "whole new life on the coast" -- the West Coast premier at the Montgomery Playhouse in San Francisco. It seems that West Coast run was in a time and a place -- San Francisco, the year before Harvey Milk was elected city supervisor -- where the culture was accepting of the gay themes of Kirkwood's play.~~.
