London 1938, Victor Gollancz. Red boards, 286p., very bright & clean example, map, [note: map NOT American edition], for Left Book Club, 13 x 19 cm. FIRST BRITISH EDITION . *** *** *** . . . A PRIMARY RESOURCE BY AN AMERICAN WOMAN & REPORTER . . . TRAVELING WITH MAO TSE TUNG & THE RED ARMY . * AGNES SMEDLEY [1892-1950]: Smedley was an American journalist and writer, known for her sympathetic chronicling of the Communist forces in the Chinese Civil War. . She went to China, where she is suspected of acting as a spy for the Comintern. As the lover of Soviet super spy Richard Sorge in Shanghai in the early 1930s, she helped get him established for his final and greatest work as spymaster in Tokyo. Note: inquire at our website for books by and about Sorge. . *** CHINA FIGHTS BACK: An American woman's personal report & observations while on march with the Communist army in the 1930's. Her first hand account is quite rare, for she was the confidant to Mao Tse-Tung, and Chu Teh, and participated on the "Long March" and other famous battles, journeys and early origins of the Communist Party in China. Superb primary resource. . * Ms. Smedley first went to China in 1929 and spent most of the time with the 8th Route Army. In spite of her bias, her works are the most important and valuable of narratives by an American of life in the Chinese Communist Army. Sympathetic insight to the Chinese Revolution by an American woman with Mao on the march and in Yenan. . * A fascinating & reliable biography of Red Army leaders, it is also the story of the Chinese Red Army. Agnes Smedley gives a rare insight to this dynamic & unorthodox leader, through her travels with the Red Army and talks with Chu Teh over two years. Her tenure as an American reporter in China in 1929 when the Japanese invaded gave her a front seat view of the war. A unique documentary source for the Revolution. . * Introduction by Anna Louise Strong [1885-1970]: Strong was a 20th-century American journalist and activist, best known for her reporting on and support for communist movements in the Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China. Strong was an early supporter of communism in China and also of Mao Tse-tung. . She became friends with Soong Ching-ling and Zhou Enlai. In great part because of her overtly pro-Chinese Communist sympathies, she settled in China until her death. . *** Per the notes on the dust jacket: "For months Agnes Smedley traveled with the roving Field Headquarters of China's Eight Route Army, the most famous of that country's fighting forces. She witnessed battles, guerrilla raids, raced for dugouts or trees at Japanese planes roared overhead dropping bombs, wrote dispatches while shells burst near-by.a living picture of the whole Chinese life, the peasants, the students, the women and children behind the lines of battle as well as fighters at the front. CHINA FIGHTS BACK might well be considered a sequel to RED STAR OVER CHINA .it gives the most up-to-the-minute details of the former Red Army and their tactics leading to recent Chinese victories.with vivid personalities described by Mr. Edgar Snow's book appear here-Chu Teh, Lin Biao, Chou [Zhou] En-lai and of course Mao Tse-tung." . * With very early photographs of Mao Tse-tung, Lin Biao, Zhou En-lai and other important Communist leaders. . * Other titles by the Smedley: Battle Hymn of China China's Red Army Marches Daughter of Earth Chinese Destinies China's China Fights Back The Great Road The Life & Times of Chu Teh Portraits of Chinese Women in Revolution Red Flood Over China. . *** LEFT BOOK CLUB example was NOT for sale to the general public in the UK. It was a "not-for-profit" organization, supported entirely by the LEFT [communist] membership and patrons. They published radical literature. . This edition came with a frontispiece map by J.G. Cloth. Condizione: Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fair. Uncommon in hardcover. This is an early reprint of the 1938 Vanguard edition. Heavily edgeworn & chipped, price clipped jacket. Rear flap is separated at fold but present and accounted for within the safety of Brodart. Clean, bright red cloth with black lettering on spine. Much darkened end pages, especially along the gutters front & back. This is a classic account in the form of a diary by Smedley who was what we would now call embedded with the Chinese Communist Eighth Route Army (lead by Zhu De) during the so called 2nd Sino-Japanese War. The communist used guerrilla tactics against the Japanese invaders during their war against the Republic of China.
