Octavo, red cloth (hardcover), black spine label, gilt letters, xvi, 235 pp. Fine in a Good dust jacket with edgewear that has been reinforced. From dust jacket: Beyond dispute the finest and noblest city in the world was Marco Polo's description of Hanchow in China, and some other early travellers shared his enthusiasm. Other favourable verdicts came from Jesuit missionaries in the seventeenth century, and from Deists in the eighteenth who saw Confucianism as akin to the Enlightenment. Chinoiserie came into vogue, not always accompanied by real knowledge. But other opinions were voiced: Defoe put a low view of the Chinese into Robinson Crusoe's mouth, and in the nineteenth century the unchanging cycle of Cathay was adversely contrasted with European progress, and the heathen Chinee seemed devoid of Christian virtues. Politics, culminating in the victory of Chinese Communism, entered increasingly into the picture. Mr. Dawson has combined first-hand knowledge of China with a study of the writings of travellers and Western scholars to produce a fascinating survey in which the varying opinions are correlated with the observers' individual standpoints and prejudices as well as the facts about China. Besides the quotations in the text, loner extracts from fifteen authors are given in an appendix and there are 29 illustrations closely related to the theme. Travel, Asian History, China, Chinese History, Chinese Culture, European History, European Culture. aslic.
