In-8, reliure articulée en Pollopas bordeaux, plats biseautés, premier plat orné d'une incrustation d'une plaque en acier poli portant le titre de l'ouvrage; nom de l'auteur et titre de l'ouvrage gravés sur une plaque de même acier poli incrustée sur le dos; doublures et gardes de papier coloré dans des tons vifs, tête dorée, non rogné, couverture imprimée (Reliure Jotau, breveté S.G.D.G.).Nouvelle édition. Très rare spécimen de ces reliures qui furent inventées et réalisées entre les années 1933 et 1955 par Joseph Taupin, sous le pseudonyme de Jotau. Les plats et le dos sont entièrement moulés en Pollopas (matière plastique proche de la galalithe mise au point par Kuhlmann), et s'articulent autour de deux charnières mécaniques de type piano. Le second plat porte à côté de la signature Reliure Jotau, la mention breveté S.G.D.G. qui laisse croire que le procédé fit l'objet d'un brevet déposé, ce qui est faux. Ce type de reliure fut abandonné, en raison du coût de fabrication et de la fragilité de la matière utilisée particulièrement cassante. Notre reliure, parfaitement conservée, est un extraordinaire témoin d'une recherche très avant-gardiste pour l'époque, et dont la conception peut être comparée à certaines créations contemporaines.

In-12, 360 pp., veau glacé bordeaux de Champs, double filet à froid en encadrement sur les plats, dos à nerfs orné de filets à froid, bordure intérieure de même peau orné de filets et fleurons dorés, couverture conservée (dos insolé, petites taches). Édition en partie originale pour 2 poèmes : "Bon pauvre, ton vêtement est léger ." et "L'amour de la Patrie est le premier amour ." publiés dans la dernière section de l'ouvrage intitulée "Bonheur". Un des 30 exemplaires sur vergé de Hollande, seul grand papier annoncé. Il comporte en frontispice un portrait de l'auteur en noir d'après Eugène Carrère. L'artiste est par ailleurs le dédicataire du poème "Les Sages d'autrefois .". Belle édition en grand papier parfaitement établie par Champs. Vicaire, VII, 997. Voir photographie(s) / See picture(s).

Uniformly bound in a pleasant quarter morocco binding with gilt stamped detailing to the spines. In the original French. The work present by Maurice Maeterlinck are two of his poplar essays, La Sagesse et La Destinee (Wisdom and Destiny) and La Vie des Abeilles (The Life of the Bee). This set also has Marguerite Adoux's influential and incredibly successful novel Marie-Claire. This novel evokes the author's adolescence and discusses difficult periods in Adoux' life. There is also a collection of Paul Verlaine's poetry, with a preface by Francois Coppee. Paul Verlaine was a symbolist poet, He is considered one of the greatest representatives of the fin de siecle in international poetry. Marguerite Audoux wrote four novels in total, but is best known for her semi-autobiographical Marie-Claire. Maurice Maeterlinck was a Belgian playwright, poet and essayist. He wrote in French. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1911 for his many literary achievements. In uniform quarter morocco bindings with paper covered boards and gilt stamped roses to spines. Externally, smart with some very minor rubbing to the extremities and to the head and tail of spines. Small loss to spine label of Marie Claire. Prior owner's inscription to the recto of front endpaper to Marie Claire, dated 10 July 1925. Bookseller's label to front pastedown of La vie Des Abeilles 'De Moderne Boekhandel Kalverstraat Amsterdam. Ink inscription to verso of front free endpaper to La Sagesse, dated 1923. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound. Pages are severely age toned, particularly to edges, due to paper used. Instances of scattered spots to endpapers and the odd spots throughout. Very Good Indeed. book.
