Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. Sherman, Cindy (illustratore). First Edition. First US edition, folio size, 240 pp. Cindy Sherman (b. 1954), photographer and filmmaker, is known for self-portraits which "offer critiques of gender and identity. What made Sherman famous is the use of her own body in roles or personas in her work, with her seminal series Untitled Film Stills (1977-1980) being particularly important. These black-and-white photographs feature the artist herself as a model in various costumes and poses, and are her portrayals of female stereotypes found in film, television, and advertising. Similar to Barbara Kruger, Sherman examines and distorts femininity as a social construct. 'I like making images that from a distance seem kind of seductive, colorful, luscious and engaging, and then you realize what you're looking at is something totally opposite,' she reflected. 'It seems boring to me to pursue the typical idea of beauty, because that is the easiest and the most obvious way to see the world. It's more challenging to look at the other side' " (n.b., from the web site of ArtNet). This work was the first presentation of her complete work up through 1993, with reviews by contemporary art historian Rosalind Krauss which highlight the "enormous influence these works have had on feminist thinking and on current dialogues about the strategies of contemporary art in general" (n.b., from dust jacket flap). ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full tan glossy paper over boards, dark green lettering on the front and spine, blue-green endpapers, replete with both black-and-white and colour photographs; folio size (12.25" by 9.25"), pagination: [1-9] 10-240. In a wrap-around dust jacket with images by Cindy Sherman upon a blue-green background, jacket unclipped although no printed price present, summary of the book on the front flap, statements about the authors and publisher's ads on the back flap. ___CONDITION: Fine, with clean boards, straight corners without rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; a few shallow marks on the bottom edges of the boards (from shelving), else fine. The unclipped dust jacket near fine with light overall edgewear, most noticeably at the head and tail of the spine. ___POSTAGE: Please note that this is an unusually heavy book and additional postage may apply; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
