Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1st Edition. JOHN VON NEUMANN THE COMPUTER AND THE BRAIN 1958 1ST EDITION HC DJ VG. I am pleased to offer: The Computer and the Brain by John von Neumann. There is an extensive citation on Wikipedia about von Neumann; please find a brief extract (with my thanks) from that reference here below. John von Neumann (December 28, 1903 February 8, 1957) was a Hungarian and American mathematician, physicist, computer scientist, engineer, and polymath. He had perhaps the widest coverage of any mathematician of his time, integrating pure and applied sciences and making major contributions to many fields, including mathematics, physics, economics, computing, and statistics. He was a pioneer in building the mathematical framework of quantum physics, in the development of functional analysis, and in game theory, introducing or codifying concepts including cellular automata, the universal constructor and the digital computer. Furthermore, quoting from the flap of the dust jacket: This book, constituting material prepared for the Silliman Lectures by John von Neumann before his death, represents the views of one of the greatest mathematicians of the twentieth century on the analogies between computing machines and the living human brain. This small and relatively thin hard cover book (5 ½ x 8 ¼ inches, 85 pages) was published by the Yale University Press of New Haven, dated 1958 and the First Edition (and research suggests it is the First Printing as well). The book is bound in gray cloth boards with black titles on the spine and protected by a printed paper dust jacket. The Preface was prepared by Klara von Neumann, Dr. Neumann s wife. Condition: This book is in near fine condition. The dust jacket is a bit dust-dulled and slightly darkened and has a bit of edge wear including a small tear and associated wrinkle at the base of the spine. The hard covers are clean and bright and only faintly bumped. Inside a former owner has left his inked name. That name is E. Root, and I believe it is the signature of Elihu Root III who taught English as nearby Hamilton College. The top edge of the pages is speckled probably with tobacco smoke residue although there is no remaining odor. Both hinges are intact, and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder. I doubt a copy in better condition of this edition of the book can be found.
