Descrizione: Basel, (Johannes Oporinus, June 1543)., 1543. Folio (319 x 456 mm). 355 leaves and two folding sheets. Roman and italic types, occasional use of Greek and Hebrew types, printed shoulder notes. Woodcut pictorial title, author portrait, and printer s device; 7 large, 186 mid-sized, and 22 small woodcut initials; more than 200 woodcut illustrations, including 3 full-page skeletons, 14 full-page muscle men, 5 large diagrams of veins and nerves, 10 mid-sized views of the abdomen, 2 mid-sized views of the thorax, 13 mid-sized views of the skull and brain, and numerous smaller views of bones, organs and anatomical parts. All woodcuts and initials up to page 165 in full contemporary hand colour. Contemporary blindstamped leather over wooden boards with bevelled edges, on five raised double bands, with two clasps. In custom-made solander box. A truly outstanding copy of one of the greatest and most appealing books in the history of science. Preserved in its original binding with the blindstamped initials of its first owner, the German physician Caspar Neefe (1514-79), and with his handwritten annotations throughout, the present copy is partly coloured by a contemporary artist (including the iconic woodcut used as title page and all anatomical illustrations up to page 165). Caspar Neefe, who later served as personal physician to Duke Albert I of Saxony, acquired the precious volume only a year after its publication and obviously consulted it extensively throughout his career as a medical practitioner. - With the publication of "De humani corporis fabrica" (when he was only twenty-eight) Vesalius revolutionized both the science of anatomy and how it was taught. In his preface he describes his disappointing experiences as a student in Paris and Louvain, stating his intention to reform the teaching of anatomy by giving in this book a complete description of the structure of the human body, thereby drawing attention "to the falsity of Galen s pronouncements". Vesalius also broke with tradition by performing dissections himself instead of leaving this task to assistants: the striking and dramatic title illustration shows him conducting such a dissection, his hand plunged into a female cadaver (striking in itself, as only the cadavers of executed criminals could be dissected legally and female criminals were rarely executed), surrounded by a seething mass of students. - The "Fabrica" is also revolutionary for "its unprecedented blending of scientific exposition, art and typography" (Norman). The woodcuts by artists of the school of Titian are both iconographically and artistically important. The series of fourteen muscle men show landscapes that, when assembled in reverse order, form a panorama of the Euganean Hills near Padua, a scenery well known to Vesalius while he was at work on the Fabrica. - Of the few copies of the first edition to have come to the market in recent decades, only two were in a contemporary binding. Apart from Vesalius's dedication copy to Emperor Charles V (Christie's New York, 18 March 1998, lot 213: $1,652,500), only a single other partly coloured copy was previously known, a list to which ours must now be added as the third known copy in contemporary colour. - Acquired in 2017; previously in a Tyrolean private medical collection, where the book rested for three generations (erased circular library stamp in the blank lower margin of the title page): an outstanding copy hitherto unknown to scholarship (cf. the recent census published by Dániel Margócsy, University of Cambridge, below; further relevant correpondence with Dr Margócsy is available upon request). Occasional waterstaining to margins, the splendid binding a little rubbed and bumped, but altogether a wonderfully crisp, wide-margined copy of the first edition. Unquestionably the most desirable copy of a milestone in the history of science still in private hands, and likely the most important medical book obtainable for decades to come. PMM 71. VD 16, V 910. Durling 4577. Cushing VI.A.1. Eimas 281. Norman 2137. Wellcome 6560. Graesse VI.2, 289. Cf. D. Margócsy, M. Somos, S. N. Joffe: "Vesalius' Fabrica: A Report on the Worldwide Census of the 1543 and 1555 Editions", in: Social History of Medicine Vol. 30, No. 1, pp. 201 223. For Neefe cf. A. Descrizione: Basel: Johannes Oporinus, June 1543, 1543. Folio (433 x 295 mm). Early 19th-century sprinkled half sheep, marbled boards, two green morocco labels to spine lettered gilt, smooth spine divided into compartments by double gilt dotted lines and chain links. Housed in a custom slipcase. Faint ownership signature of "Ippolito Guarisci" to title page. A little worming to boards and joints, mainly superficial, joints a little tender, tips slightly worn, title page with small holes to edges, sometime repaired with concomitant browning, a few small marginal tears with old neat repairs, folding plates with small reinforcement to verso, old ink stains at outer edge of pp. 335-80, p. 356 mounted on stub, occasional finger-mark, some foxing and marginal dampstaining throughout, more evident at final few leaves, overall presenting well. Woodcut pictorial title page (laid down on thin paper), full-page portrait of Vesalius, probably after Jan Stephan Calkar, 7 large, 186 mid-sized, and 22 small woodcut initials, more than 200 woodcut illustrations, including 3 full-page skeletons, 14 full-page muscle-men, 5 large diagrams of veins and nerves, 10 mid-sized views of the abdomen, 2 views of the thorax, 13 of the skull and brain, and numerous smaller views of bones, organs and anatomical parts, and 2 double-page folds, one of veins and one of nerves. First edition of Vesalius's magnum opus, the founding text of modern anatomy, which revolutionized the science and teaching of medicine and practice of surgery. "This is the work that, by breaking the stranglehold in which the writings of Galen had gripped anatomical research for the previous twelve centuries, was instrumental in turning researchers away from his pages and sending them back to the prime source: the human body itself" (Richardson, p. ix). Over 200 pioneering anatomical illustrations were incorporated into the text: the highly technical woodcuts, groundbreaking in their realism, were all carefully executed under Vesalius's supervision in Venice. In an unprecedented coalescence of scientific exposition, art, and typography, the De Fabrica became "one of the most beautiful scientific books ever printed" (Grolier). "Galen was not merely improved upon: he was superseded; and the history of anatomy is divided into two periods, pre-Vesalian and post-Vesalian" (PMM). Cf. Descrizione: Ex Officina Joannis Oporini, Basel, 1543. First edition of the most important and influential book in the study of human anatomy and "one of the most beautiful scientific books ever printed"(Grolier). Folio, bound in full 18th century calf, woodcut title page with Vesalius performing a dissection, woodcut portrait of the author, over 200 woodcut anatomical illustrations, including 21 full page and 2 folding-sheet figural woodcuts of the skeletal, muscular, vascular and nervous systems. In very good condition with some light dampstaining to some page edges. Rare and desirable, especially in contemporary calf. A splendid example of Vesalius' masterpiece, one of the most monumental achievements in the history of both medical education and printing. Sixteenth century Flemish anatomist and physician Andreas Vesalius studied medicine at the University of Paris and received his doctorate in medicine from the University of Padua in 1537. The University of Padua was home to the most prestigious medical school in Europe at the time yet based its curriculum primarily on ancient and erroneous understandings of the human body, still holding to the anatomy of ancient Greek physician and surgeon Galen. On the day of his graduation, Vesalius was immediately offered the chair of surgery and anatomy at Padua. There, he produced his monumental anatomical study, De humani corporis fabrica (On the Fabric of the Human Body), a collection of anatomically illustrated books based on his Paduan lectures, during which he deviated from common practice by dissecting a corpse as a part of his teaching lecture. Dissections had previously been performed by a barber surgeon under the direction of a doctor of medicine. Shortly after his first lectures, a judge of the Paduan criminal court made available to Vesalius the bodies of executed criminals, which provided him with sufficient specimens to produce, at the age of twenty-nine, his monumental anatomical study. The importance of the Fabrica in the history of medicine can scarcely be exaggerated. Vesalius revolutionized the study of medicine and practice of surgery with his insistence that anatomical knowledge must be derived from firsthand dissection and study of the human anatomical structures. Insisting on empirical observation, the Fabrica "undermined the widespread reverence for authority in science and prepared the way for independent observation in anatomy and clinical medicine" (Garrison-Morton). Throughout the books, the remarkably accurate text is coupled with woodcut anatomical illustrations of artistic and technical brilliance in a comprehensive study of bones, muscles, blood vessels, nerves, abdominal viscera, thoracic organs and the brain. "Galen was not merely improved upon: he was superseded; and the history of anatomy is divided into two periods, pre-Vesalian and post-Vesalian" (PMM). The unprecedented detail of the illustrations would not have been possible without the many artistic developments in the fine arts that had been made during the Italian Renaissance, particularly in literal visual representation and the technical development of printing with detailed woodcut engravings. Descrizione: Basle Johannes Oporinus June, 1543. First edition. Folio (44.5 x 30 cm). [xii], 659 (numbered 663), [36 ] pp., with a fine woodcut title, woodcut portrait of the author, two double page-size woodcuts (within pagination and folded; one printed on both sides), complete with both bifolium inserts (bound vertically) after page 312 (412), (this with small repairs to verso and mounted on later stub), and after page 352 (452), also with sheet m3, often missing, containing 8 woodcuts; 21 full-page woodcuts, c. 200 smaller woodcuts, numerous woodcut initials, and woodcut printer's device at the end; later Italian half calf, marbled boards, green morocco label. Some old brown stains to title, small marginal restoration to outer blank margin of title, old light damp-staining towards end (mainly to index), occasional light foxing, generally a very good clean example. 'A paradigm shift for the study of human anatomy and also a work of the finest aesthetic beauty' (British Library). A very good, tall copy of one of the most important books in the history of medicine. This copy is complete with the inserted bifoliums and leaf m3, sometimes missing. Vesalius was 'born into a family of physicians in 1514 in Brussels, then part of the Holy Roman Empire. Initially studying at the University of Louvain, he completes his doctorate in Padua in 1537 and becomes the chair of anatomy and surgery at the tender age of 23; however, this was not considered an especially important branch of medicine compared to the more exciting emerging areas of lotions and potions. His big break came when a local judge, impressed with his work, permitted him to use of corpses of executed criminals thus enabling him to perform comparative dissection of the human form. Such an opportunity was denied to the great Galen of the second century who despite being physician to gladiators and emperors, only ever worked on animals due to the religious dogma of the time. Vesalius however quickly realised that Galen had simply extrapolated his findings to humans and consequently had made a huge number of glaringly embarrassing assumptions and errors. Most notably Galen thought that blood was made in the liver and then used for fueling muscles, and he also thought there were holes in the septum, allowing blood flow from one side of the heart to the other. Galen incorrectly described the human jawbone as being made of two bones, like that of a canine and he was completely wrong about the shape of the human liver. Vesalius was also able to demonstrate that males and females have identical numbers of ribs, the biblical orthodoxy was that men had one less because God made Eve from Adam's rib. Vesalius then pulled another masterstroke publishing this great work, which is essentially the human anatomy, in seven books, employing an artist from the school of Titian to do the illustrations. These stunningly beautiful drawings of figures striking theatrical poses in classical landscapes grab the limelight, and will be forever known as the muscle men.' (Matt Hunt, British Library, Science Blog). The present copy is complete with the inserted single leaf m3, headed Charta parvas aliquot figuras complectens: 'This leaf has on its recto eight anatomical figures which were to be cut out and superimposed on the folded m3 double-leaf The half-sheet in question is often absent' (Cushing). Descrizione: Joannem Oporini, Basel, 1555. Second ed. With the famous woodcut title, portrait of Vesalius, 23 full-page and approximately 180 cuts in the text, large and small historiated initials. Complete with the 2 folding plates (bound in) and large printer's device on verso of last leaf. Modern full calf in a contemporary style, spine in compartments with gilt decorations and morocco label; first 8 and last 2 leaves repaired on the edges, P3 (pp. 437-438) torn on top right corner affecting last word in top 3 lines, otherwise an excellent, clean and wide-margined copy. Second edition containing Vesalius's final revision of the text, along with significant typographical improvements and refinements. Oporinus set this edition in larger type (49 instead of 57 lines per page), which required recutting of all the small initial letters so that they could fit seven lines of new type. He also used heavier and finer paper and improved the presswork so that this second edition would be a superior example of bookmaking (see Norman, II, 2139). According to Choulant-Frank, "the impression of the woodcuts is often clearer and more beautiful than in the previous edition." This edition contains important corrections and additions. "A fairly full description of the vermiform appendix is added, and of great importance among the alterations is the denial of the permeability of the septum of the heart, thus contributing very substantially to the ultimate discovery of the circulation of the blood" (Tubor Doby, Discoverers of Blood Circulation, pp. 161-64). Descrizione: Venetiis [Venice]: Apud Franciscum Franciscium Senensem, & Joannem Criegher Germanum, 1568., 1568. Folio, 6 leaves, pp. 510, (46). With 20 full-page and about 130 smaller anatomical woodcuts in the text. Printer?s woodcut device on title. Early 18th-century mottled sheep, spine gilt. Bookplates of Piergiorgio Borio, M.D. A nice crisp copy in attractive condition. Fourth edition (the third in folio with illustrations), and the first to be posthumously published. This edition is well printed on durable paper and set up with marginal notes exactly as in the Basel 1555 edition. In 1564 Vesalius stopped in Venice on his way to the Holy Land and submitted his last book, a reply to Falloppio, to the printer Francesco Senense for publication. Vesalius died later than year on the island of Zante. Four year later and in collaboration with a Pomeranian engraver, Joannes Criegher, Senense printed the present edition, the complete text of the 1555 Fabrica but in smaller folio format and with the woodcuts slightly reduced. ?The new woodcuts for the illustrations, however, were so well executed that the engraver might almost have passed for the same person who in Venice at the behest of Vesalius had cut the original blocks for the larger work? (Cushing). It must have been an expensive undertaking, but it shows that there was still a demand for the Latin text and the illustrations that could be met by a less costly edition than the ponderous 1555 edition. Descrizione: Venice Franciscus Francisci and Johann Criegher, 1568. Fourth Edition and Third Folio Edition VESALIUS, Andreas. De humani corporis fabrica libri septem. Venice: Franciscus Francisci and Johann Criegher, 1568. Fourth edition, third folio edition. Folio (12 3/4 x 8 3/4 inches; 325 x 220 mm). [12], 510, [45, table], [3, blank]. With twenty full-page engraved woodcut illustrations which are reduced from those of the blocks cut for the first edition (Basel 1543). "The copying was done from the Oporin edition of 1555 and includes eight additions made in 1555. The Basel woodcuts are attributed to Jan Stephan van Calcar, a pupil of Titian. Franceschi states in his dedication to Antonio Montecatini that Giovanni Chrieger cut these Venice copies" (Mortimer). And with numerous other woodcuts in the text. Leaf Dd5 recto (page 321) contains figures to be cut out and superimposed on to leaf Dd3 verso (page 318). In this copy the figures remain intact and not cut out. Full contemporary vellum, rebacked. Two corners renewed. Vellum is a bit soiled and rubbed. Some minor worming to pastedowns. Previous owner's book plate (Norwich) on front pastedown. Early signatures on title-page of Horation de Noccis of Castello Horca, and Dr. Bartolomeo Marzo. Early ink signature of Dr. John H. Brinton (gift inscription from Brinton Coxe dated July 9/1891), and stamp of John Brinton on title-page. Ward Brinton (dated 1908) on front free endpaper. Stamp of Oswald Weigel on front pastedown. Overall a very good copy. Chemised and housed ina quarter calf slipcase. "Fine American medical provenance: John Hill Brinton (1832-1907) was a prominent American surgeon from Philadelphia and friend of painter Thomas Eakins. He succeeded Dr. Samuel D. Gross (who was featured in Thomas Eakins' The Gross Clinic), in the chair of surgery at Jefferson College, and also served as the chairman of the Mütter Museum Committee of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. He also founded the Philadelphia Pathological Society, and served as the first curator of the National Museum of Health and Medicine in Washington, D.C." (Christie's NY 12/7/12) "Throughout this encyclopedic work on the structure and workings of the human body, Vesalius provided a fuller and more detailed description of human anatomy than any of his predecessors, correcting errors in the traditional anatomical teachings of Galen (which had been obtained from primate rather than human dissections), and arguing that knowledge of human anatomy was to be obtained only from human sources. Even more revolutionary than his criticism of Galen and other medieval authorities was Vesalius s assertion that the dissection of cadavers must be performed by the physician himself. This hands-on principle remained Vesalius s most lasting contribution to the teaching of anatomy" (Norman Library). "Galen was not merely improved upon: he was superseded; and the history of anatomy is divided into two periods, pre-Vesalian and post-Vesalian" (Printing and the Mind of Man). Adams V606. Descrizione: 1975. Reprint, Niewendijk, de Forel bv, 1975. - Basel 1543, Folio, (1), 659, (1) pp., mit zahlreichen Abbildungen nach Holzschnitten, Halbledereinband im orig. Schuber; 15 pp., orig. Broschur; feines Expl. "It is often a matter of friendly contention among medical historians as to which is the more important book, Vesalius' "De humani corporis fabrica" or Harvey's "De motu cordis". It cannot be denied that the "Fabrica" is the most famous anatomical work ever published, to this day one of the most beautiful in existence, and the milestone in all medical history which definitely showed a break from old traditions. It cannot be emphasized too often that this was an epochal book. The beautiful woodcuts, executed under the supervision of Vesalius by the artist Jan Stephan van Calcar (1499-1546?), student of Titian, are famous for their beauty, accuracy, and lavishness of detail and number. It was E.Jackschath of Tilsit who pointed out that the background scenes of the "muscle man" illustrations are, when collected into a continuum, a dioramic replica of the Paduan countryside of the time of Vesalius. The often-copied frontispiece dissecting scene, a portrait of Vesalius dissecting the arm, and the innumerable capital letters (depicting grave robbing, naked little boys urinating with abandon, operation for the stone, childbirth, cranial operations, etc.) are as fascinating a study as are the 171 anatomical plates. (.) This first edition of the "Fabrica" is the heart of any library of medical history." Heirs of Hippocrates No.172. Buch. Codice articolo 34805
