About The Book: In this book, the author departs from the original plan of releasing a second edition, opting instead for an alphabetically arranged compendium. Encompassing diverse facets of the Indian and Philippine Archipelagos, the book draws from seven additional years of local experience in India following the 1820, The passage delves into Musa textilis, a banana type known as abaca, extensively cultivated in Luzon and the Bisaya Islands for fibers, surpassing cotton in local importance. Dampier's 1686 account offers insights into abaca's dual utility for food and clothing, underlining its significant exports from Manila. About The Author: John Crawfurd (1783Ð1868), a Scottish physician and colonial administrator, served as the last Resident of Singapore. In retirement, he authored significant works, including the "Journal of an Embassy to the Court of Ava in 1827" and the "Descriptive Dictionary of the Indian Islands and Adjacent Countries" (1856). A historian critical of European actions in Asia, Crawfurd's major work was the "History of the Indian Archipelago" (1820). As an Orientalist, he collaborated on "An Historical and Descriptive Account of China" (1836) and contributed to Austronesian linguistics. Criticizing the perceived backwardness of the Indian economy, Crawfurd advocated financial reforms and investment in raw materials. His views on agrarian economies influencing absolute governance were referenced by Samuel Taylor Coleridge.
