When discovered by the college authorities, he is expected to apologise and repent in an effort to save his job, but he refuses to become a scapegoat in what he see as as a show trial designed to reinforce a stringent political correctness. He pre-empts the authorities and leaves his job, and the city, to spend time with his grown-up lesbian daughter on her remote farm. In spectacularly powerful and lucid prose, Coetzee uses all his formidable skills to engage with a post-apartheid culture in unexpected and revealing ways. This examination into the sexual and political lawlessness of modern South Africa as it tries desperately to start a fresh page in its history is chilling, uncompromising and unforgettable.* This is a NEAR FINE copy of the 1st./1st. FNL with minimal age & shelf wear reducing it to VG++.* 2000-04-06. n.

Hardcover. Condizione: Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. 1st Edition. A UK 1st edition 1st printing hardback copy indicated on the copyright page by a 24681097531 number line. This is an ex-library copy, but is a first state copy printed by Biddles with no mention of the booker prize to the front of the dust jacket. - The book itself is in good condition. Interestingly it has a dark blue leather-type covered boards and spine, rather than the usual fabric covered boards. These boards have no title or author detailed to the spine. The book has a push to the top and bottom of the spine with bumps to the outside corners. The book also has a slight lean and sunning to the page block. Internally, there is an abrasion to the front free end paper where, I expect, the library sticker has been removed. There is also an abrasion to the title page where, again I suspect, a library sticker has been removed. Small tape marks to the pastedowns (possibly where they had once been attached to the dust jacket). Otherwise good. - The first-state dust jacket is also in good condition and has not been price clipped. Ruffling to the top and bottom, particularly around the spine. Small nicks where the flaps meet the front and reverse. Otherwise a good copy.
