Editore: England, [Douglas Cockerell / John William North], no year [c.]., 1910
Da: Inanna Rare Books Ltd., Skibbereen, CORK, Irlanda
Libro Copia autografata
Folio (34 cm wide x 42.5 cm high). 216 pages. Hardcover / Binding in full green morocco with lettering and Dante's head as bronze sculpture per inlet to front cover. Binding by Douglas Cockerell, signed "WHS", during his directorship of W.H.Smith & Son (1905 - 1914). The manuscript is on excellent paper, watermarked O.W.P. & A.C.L. [O.W. Paper & Arts Co. Ltd., established by English painter John William North (1842-1924) in 1895]. The binding rubbed and with some small damages, in need of some minor restoration but overall still very good. The interior, the paper and the artwork all in excellent condition besides one of the juxtaposed photographs (Filippina Lippo) removed from the manuscript with some residue of the photograph remaining and some of the photographs with some dogears and minimal discoloration. All the original artwork in spectacular and fresh condition. The manuscript is a spectacular find and the quality of its execution is of utmost interest for any lover of rare books, manuscripts and special bindings. The circle of Douglas Cockerell, his involvement in one of the most beautiful books ever printed: the Ashendene Press Dante, as well as Cockerell being the binder of this unique manuscript, the fantastic paper used for the manuscript by one of the idyllist movement's central figures, John William North, and the wonderful Dante - theme of the manuscript with illuminated poetry from the Divine Comedy and the unique style of collage art, lets us rightfully dream that the anonymous composer of the manuscript was an important or at least peripheral member to either the Arts and Crafts Movement, the Ashendene Press or it was someone who worked in the style of the calligraphy schools that were inspired by William Morris or even earlier epigones like Owen Jones. Prima edizione
First English language edition. The first complete translation into English of Dante's "Divine Comedy." Bound in full contemporary calf. Boards ruled in gilt with decorative blindstamped borders. Armorial insignia of the Dunalley baronage blindstamped on the front of each board. Marbled end papers and text block. Spines joints and corners repaired. Internally clean and fresh, with Catherine Dunalley's name written in pencil on the title page of each volume (wife of Henry Prittie, 1st Baron Dunalley). A handsome set overall. Three 8vo volumes (pages 215 x 128 mm), collating: vi, [2], 408; [ii], 56, [ii (divisional title)], 57-62, 65-384 (complete); [ii], 420pp., engraved frontispiece portrait plate of Dante by Thomas Stothard in vol.1; complete. One of the world's great masterpieces and a foundational text of Italian literature. The Comedy took over a decade for Dante to write, he worked on it in exile, having been sent out of his native Florence in 1302, when his political faction fell out of favor. The work's genius was quickly recognized -- Boccaccio himself was so obsessed with it that he was responsible for adding the prefix "Divine." Over the years, it has influenced countless writers, among them Ezra Pound, T. S. Eliot, and James Joyce. Borges claimed it was "the best book literature has achieved." Boyd (1748/49 - 1832), a member of the Irish clergy, released his first English translation of the Inferno in 1785, following up with the complete work in this 1802 edition. His translation would help bring Dante back into literary circles after he had fallen by the critical wayside in the aftermath of the Renaissance and Enlightenment. The Divine Comedy soon regained its popularity; before the 19th century was up Longfellow would also try his hand at a translation and William Blake would make drawings of some of its more famous passages.

Prima edizione
First complete edition in English of the Divine Comedy and the first publication in English of the Purgatorio and the Paradiso; the Inferno here in its fourth appearance in English, following the first edition of 1782 and the Dublin and London editions by Boyd in 1785. This complete edition helped "re-establish an audience for Dante, whose reputation had suffered a decline in the previous century" (ODNB). The translator, the Church of Ireland clergyman Henry Boyd (1748/9-1832), stamped his own character on this text with a lengthy introductory preface and an historical essay, the latter in addition to his translation of Leonardo Bruni's Life of Dante. Boyd celebrates Dante as an original genius whose reputation had been unjustly diminished by unimaginative laws of criticism dominated by the French propensity to "cast a damp upon original invention". Interestingly, Boyd attempts to associate the resurgence of Dante with the contemporary rise of radical thought and politics "in this age of enlightened reason and adventurous discovery" (vol. I, p. 1). Fiske Catalogue of the Dante Collection vol. I, p. 43; Lowndes, vol. I., p. 589. 3 volumes, octavo (229 x 142 mm). Contemporary half calf, smooth spines lettered and tooled in gilt, marbled sides. Vol. I with stipple-engraved frontispiece portrait, engraved by R. H. Cromek after T. Stothard. Bound without half-titles. Very light shadow of bookplates to front pastedowns, early signature "Beck" to front free endpaper of vol. I. Joints and extremities neatly restored, 55 mm closed tear to fore edge of B1 into text without loss, light spotting. A very good copy.

Libro Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. T. Cadell Jun. and W. Davies, in the Strand, London, 1802. Three volumes. Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) was a major Italian poet. He has been called the father of the Italian language and is one of the most admired and influential poets ever. His book, The Divina Commedia, is a masterpiece of world literature and is considered by many to be the greatest poem of the Middle Ages. The Divina Commedia describes Dante s journey through Hell (Inferno), Purgatory (Purgatorio) and Paradise (Paradiso). The work was translated into many European languages well before it was translated into English. The lack of English translations was due in part to Dante s Catholic views thought to be of little interest to Protestant English audiences. The first complete translation of the Divina Commedia, this set, was first published in 1802. The translator was the Rev. Henry Boyd. Boyd was most likely educated at Trinity College, Dublin. At the time the book was published, the Rev. Boyd was the vicar of Rathfryland, County Down, Northern Ireland. He was also chaplain to the Right Honourable Charles William, Lord Viscount Charleville, to whom this work was dedicated. The books are bound in contemporary mottled leather that has started to flake. The front cover hinges show some cracking at the bottom but are still very sound. The books are nice and square and are very solidly bound and unrestored. The lower book label on the spine of volume III is missing. It would read Vol. III on two lines. Marbled endpapers with two previous owners bookplates. The volumes are collated 100% correct. The page sizes are 208 x 128mm. Vol I frontispiece portrait of Dante, title page, dedication iii to vi + 408 pp; Vol II half title, title page + 384pp; Vol III half title, title page + 420pp. There are very minor traces of damp staining and foxing here and there. Overall a very sound and attractive copy of a truly rare seminal work in world literature.

3 volumes. The first Lombardi edition. This set with Extensive Manuscript Notes on separate leaves bound into each volume, outlining the cantos and the "arguments" of each. All in a fine 18th century hand. With engraved titles to each volume and 3 engraved plates illustrating Inferno, Purgatorio and Paradiso by Monsignore D. Diomede Asimiro Caraffa. A large and well margined copy. 4to, in lovely period Italian bindings of three-quarter mottled and polished calf over mottled paper covered boards, the spines with raised bands gilt tooled at their borders, olive green morocco lettering labels gilt, all edges marbled to style. [18 manuscript pages], xxviii, 502; [18 manuscript pages], [ii], 523 [1]; [16 manuscript pages], xii, 518, index 519-541, Aggiunta. A very handsome and crisp set, very well preserved, the bindings tight and clean and beautifully presented, the text-blocks clean and crisp and unpressed with some leaves showing the light mellowing or browning normal to the printing. FIRST OF THE FIRST ROME PRINTING CONTAINING THE ENTIRE TEXT, edited by the Franciscan Galdassarre Lombardi (to whom the acronym in the title alludes). The printing defined as "rare and Magnificent" by Mambelli, and which contains the list of textual variants at the end of each volume. According to Mambelli, Lombardi used the 1478 incunable edition to prepare this edition. A very beautiful and scholarly Italian printing of Dante, with commentary and notes throughout the text and including the defesa of Lombardi. The Encyclopedia Britannica states that the Eighteenth Century saw a revival of interest in Dante and that countless editions were printed, but lists the Lombardi of 1791 as one of the three finest and most noteworthy of that century. The bindings are consistent with fine Italian bindings of the day.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. Dante, Alighieri. The Divina Commedia. London: T. Cadell Jun. and W. Davies, 1802. First edition, 3 volumes, 8 vo., vi, [2], 408; [4], 384; [4], 420. This is the 1st edition of the first English translation of Dante's The Divine Comedy by Henry Boyd. Printed and published by A. Strahan, New-Street Square; for T. Cadell Jun. and W. Davies, in the Strand (London), 1802. Complete in 3 volumes with engraved frontispiece of Dante. This set is attractively bound in contemporary mottled calf-leather boards. The spine of each volume is divided into compartments by double gilt decorative rolls and black leather title and volume labels, along with tooled gilt ornaments, gilded board edges, and plain end-papers. Very good condition; minor damages of leather boards, scuffing of edges and bumped corners; all 6 boards remain securely bound and attached, with tenderness, cracking of board joints, and slight separations appearing only at the bottom corners of the front board of Inferno and the back-board of Purgatorio; mottled calf-leather, with minor scratches and gouging, as well as chipping at the top and bottom of the spine ends; internally the books are all excellent, clean and unmarked, without any damages or foxing, and all of the pages securely bound and intact. An attractive and well-preserved copy of the 1st English edition of all three volumes of Dante's timeless epic poem. Henry Boyd's complete translation was issued in 1802, almost five centuries after the 14th-century Italian original. Boyd provided the very first full translation of La Commedia into English, translating Dante's work into rhymed 6-line stanzas. Prior to 1802, there was little attention in the English-speaking Protestant world to Alighieri's work, given its deeply Catholic nature. Today, however, the Divine Comedy has been translated into English more times than it has into any other language, and new English translations continue to be published regularly. This beautifully preserved first-edition three-volume set. Collation: Complete. 3 volumes, 8 vo, volume 1: vi, (1), 2-408, engraved frontispiece portrait; volume 2: (1-3), 4-384; volume 3: (2), (1-2), 3-420, index, errata et addenda.

Leather. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: No Dust Jacket. Limited Edition. Limited Edition of 300 of which this is 69. Folio in blind stamped pale peach leather with clasps, in a cream linen box. Condition of the book and the box are near fine. 25.6 x 37.6 cm, unnumbered 167 ff (334 pp). A stunning facsimile edition of the Divine Comedy held at the Seminary Library at Padua, acquired by their librarian in 1720 as part of the book collection of the Paduan count Alfonso Alvarotti. It is profusely and richly illustrated in gold foil and colours, with large illuminations at the beginning of each of the three canticles, consisting of historiated initials, surrounded by a frieze of vines, flowers, and "drolleries" of human and animal figures. As well, there are large and glorious initials on many of the pages. The illustrations , which cleverly echo the part of the story they are illuminating, are unusual and a bit mysterious. The production of the manuscript has been dated to the second half of the 14th century and some suggest the illuminations were done in Umbria, with other scholars suggesting Perugia, while others reject a southern source. Research is ongoing but, whatever the location of the artist or artists who produced the decorations, there is no doubt about their skill and exquisite vision. As is usual with the Rimini/Imago facsimiles, the paper used is beautiful old paper treated to look as much like the original as possible. The leather bindings are meticulously handcrafted and hand sewn. And the condition of this example is near fine, with only the slightest evidence of any wear. A truly beautiful book and a scarce one, with only 300 copies made. Also contains the explanatory booklet. OCLC 1004270323; Folio 13" - 23" tall; 334 pages.

The translation was completed by Henry Boyd, then Vicar of Rathfryland in County Down. The contents are complete with frontispiece portrait by Stothard and titles and half titles to each volume. Vol I: frontispiece; title; dedication; half title to Inferno; text 408pp. Vol II: title; half title; preliminary essay and text 384pp. Vol III: title; half title; preliminary essay and text with index, errata and addenda 420pp (more detailed collation available on request). Near Fine. Finely bound in vellum elaborately stamped in gilt, top edge gilt, looped string straps with one clasp post lacking. The printing process was arduous, in part because of the minuscule 2-point Didot type (so-called "flies' eye" type), "thought to be the smallest ever employed," and "said to have injured the eyesight of both the compositor and the corrector." Because only 30 pages could be printed in a month, the work took many years to complete. The project was begun in 1850 by Giacomo Gnocchi, but the work was abandoned. Resumed in 1873 by his son Giovanni, the edition was completed at the Printing Works 'Alla Minerva' in Padua overseen by Gaetano Gianuzzi and completed on 9 June 1878. Faksimile neuwertig. Limitierte Auflage. Die Gesamtauflage wurde nie vollständig produziert. Buchblock neu aufgebunden. Sehr selten! Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 0.

Full Decorated Morocco. Condizione: Fine. A gorgeous decorative brown morocco binding of one the highpoints in the history of miniature book production! 55 by 40 mm. 500 pp. The two-point "flies' eyes" type used in the book was singled out by Spielman as "the smallest ever employed." Another piece of trivia relating to this book's production is that 30 pages took about a month to produce, and dealing with the miniscule type ened up hurting the eyesight of both the compositor and corrector, according to "Miniature Books: 4,000 Years of Tiny Treasures", issued by the Grolier Club. Limited edition, number 805 of 1475 copies, printed in Monotype Bladfolio; text in Italian and English printed in parallel, 34 double-page and 8 full-page illustrations after the drawings of Sandro Botticelli; publisher's full orange-stained vellum, double gilt rule borders to upper and lower covers, central gilt device to both covers, gilt lettering to spine, top edge gilt, a small area of browning to the fore-edge, only discernible when open and the pages are staggered, due to he deckled or unshaved nature of the text block, otherwise a fine copy. A sumptuous edition bound in orange vellum, this beautiful book was the most over-subscribed of all the Nonesuch publications. The production was beset with problems over the paper stock and the binding, therefore as a result, it is exceptionally rare to find such a superb copy without the usual fading to spine or splaying to covers. Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. Original decorative cloth bdg. with Dante's portrait gilt on front board and spine. Black cloth with red decorative borders. Gilt on spine with Greek letters 'Dantou o Paradeisos [.] Metaphrasis Konstantinou Mousourou', and gilt publisher's name in English on lower. A small etiquette on lower spine. Some little wormholes on cloth and several pages. Pages are partly opened, uncut and untrimmed. Slightly faded on cloth's board. A stamp on first page. Otherwise a very good copy. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). In Greek (Modern). [xiv], 334 p. 14 p. 'prologos' by Musurus. Konstantinos Mousouros, also known as Kostaki Musurus Pasha, was an Ottoman Greek diplomatic official of the Ottoman Empire who served as ambassador to Greece, Austria, Great Britain, Belgium, and the Netherlands. He was born in 1807 in Constantinople (Istanbul) to a distinguished Phanariote family. His brother, Pavlos Mousouros, also became a diplomat. Mousouros became the first ambassador of the Ottoman Empire to the newly independent Kingdom of Greece in 1840, a position he kept until 1848. In 1847-48 he was a central figure in the events known as Mousourika (??????????), which led to his temporary recall and the breakdown of relations between the two states. On his return to Athens he survived an assassination attempt, leading to his transfer to Vienna. In 1850 he took up the post of Ottoman ambassador to the Great Britain and Ireland, which he kept for 35 consecutive years, until his retirement in 1885. During the same period, he also served as ambassador to the Netherlands (1861-77) and Belgium (1861-75). In 1876-78, he was ex officio a member of the short-lived Senate of the Ottoman Empire. Well educated, in 1883 Mousouros translated Dante's Divine Comedy into ancient Greek. He was married and had a son, Stephanos Mousouros, who later became Prince of Samos. (Wikipedia). He is known as the first translator of Dante's Divine Comedy into modern Greek. Musurus Pasha had an intellectual identity. One of the most important occupations of Musurus Pasha in the last years was the translation of Dante's Divine Comedy from Italian to Greek. Being able to translate a work of Italian classics and masterpieces of western literature should be an indication of Musurus Pasha's performance and intellectual dimension. Due to negative statements about Muhammad and Ali in Dante's work, the book was not allowed to be published within the Ottoman Imperial borders. Despite this, Musurus Pasha asked him to be permitted to publish his translation, but it was not accepted. (Source: Bir Tanzimat diplomati Kostaki Musurus Pasa, (1807-1891)., NURDAN SAFAK). Dante's Divine Comedy, originally called Comedia, and later christened Divina by Giovanni Boccaccio, is widely considered the most important poem of the Middle Ages and the greatest literary work in the Italian language. This is only 'Paradiso' book from the set. It's signed and inscribed by Musurus Pasha with a dedication in French to Monseigneur Auguste Bonetti as "A la grandeur Monseigneur Bonetti, Hommage de veneration, Musurus". Bonetti was, in 1887, after the appointment of Monsignor Rotelli to the Vatican Ambassador to Paris, the new Constantinople patriarch appointed by Rome for him. First Greek Edition. Extremely rare. Signed by translator.
