Covers are clean and bright with some scratches on back and minor shelfwear. Minor rubbing to corners, lower corner on front is bumped. All edges of textblock show light foxing. Endpapers show light age tanning. Previous owner's bookplate affixed to front pastedown, bookplate is wrinkled and stained from adhesive. Price written in pencil by previous seller and light offsetting from bookplate on front free endpaper. Hinges strong. Binding tight. Spine leans slightly to right. Small indentations thoughout, one page has folded corner, otherwise clean and complete. 371 pages. 5-5/8 X 8-1/4.

It was composed on the Linotype in Baskerville, a faithful interpretation of the letter cut by John Baskervillre, one of England's leading typefounders and printers, in about 1757. It was the first transitional letter and marked the major step between the old style letter and the modern letter. Both volumes were privately printed for Redbook Magazine in 1938, reprinting stories by Hall that originally appeared in the magazine. Hall is best known as cowriter with Charles Nordhoff of the novel Mutiny on the Bounty. The six stories in Doctor DogbodyÕs Leg are set in a Portsmouth tavern called the Cheerful Tortoise, where a Royal Navy surgeon tells a series of stories about how he lost his leg during the Napoleonic wars. Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards chose these books as among those few he would take to a desert island. Free of any markings, not ex-library. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.
