In good condition. Rebound with original leather spine. Original spine has moderate wear with scuffing and abrasions to surface. Surface imperfections and minor red rot at ends. Fresh end papers. Binding is stiff and poorly rebound. Difficult to fully open. Internally good with light toning and minor instances of foxing. Some small tears to the margins. Old hand ownership on title of John Bassett. Minor offsetting from engravings. Free of known marginalia. Please see photos. First edition, 3 volumes, 8vo, engraved title pages in each volume, 48 plates (one on thin paper engraved on glass, one folding which is trimmed tight at the caption); 3 prospectuses (one for the original series and 2 for the New Series bound in (6, 8, and 14 pages respectively); contemporary full calf, red morocco labels on spines; moderate foxing, especially on the plates; scuffed and rubbed, but sound. The last 2 volumes of the New Series are not present. A nice set of the first three volumes of this important early American science periodical, rarely found in good condition with all the plates. A professor of chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania, Coxe became editor with the first number, but in the first volume of the new series, present, here, Thomas Cooper became the editor. American Imprints 25176, for the first two volumes, and 28226 for Cooper's editorship in 1813. Rink 62, citing all five volumes, through 1814.
