"Vicksburg, the most strategic location on the Mississippi River, was captured by U.S. Grant after a brilliant campaign which catapulted him to first rank in the Union Army. Civil War buffs are familiar with the siege and capture of the "Gibraltar of the Confederacy," but few people realize just how important Vicksburg was during the remaining years of the Civil War and the period of Reconstruction which followed. Professor James T. Currie relates in this thought-provoking work that between July 4, 1863, and the end of the War in May 1865, Vicksburg and the plantations around it were an enclave of Union territory in the heart of the Confederacy. Slavery was abolished within this enclave, and plantations were re-established using free labor. Vicksburg became a haven for refugees from the Confederacy, and its population increased from 4,500 to a temporary 50,000, with attendant problems of administration, sanitation, crime, and shortages of food and housing. Davis Bend, where the plantations of Jefferson Davis and his brother Joseph were located, was the site of a Union-sponsored experiment in free black labor, which the freedmen soon took over and ran themselves. Using a wealth of manuscript materials, some of which have only recently come to light, Currie has recounted the story of the experiment and of the involvement there of the remarkable Benjamin Montgomery family, who had once been Joseph Davis' slaves. An earlier version of this chapter on Davis Bend was awarded the Charles Thomson Prize by the National Archives of the United States. At the end of the CIvil War, Vicksburg reverted to civilian control, but U.S. troops took over again with the advent of Congressional Reconstruction. Currie has identified many of the problems confronting the city during the late 1860's and has indicated the means through which solutions were sought. Vicksburg was the cotton shipping port for a wide-spread agricultural area. What affected agriculture, affected the city. One of the many changes that confronted post-War agriculture was the crop lien. Using the lien records themselves, Currie found much more flexibility in the system than has generally been thought. If the Warren County condition is not completely atypical, his findings may cause historians to question some of their assumptions about the generally-debilitating effects of the system. In summary, the book is an intensive examination of Vicksburg and Warren County for the seven years from 1863 to 1870. Much of what it relates about the area is new and challenging, and the fascinating story of this period can be read with profit by anyone interested in the one time which most surely affects our own." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps.
