Condizione: Wie neu. Editions Xavier Barral, Paris. 2021. First english edition, first printing. New, enlarged edition of the photobook classic from 1999, published by Scalo. "End Time City" war Ackerman`s first photobook. New, mint, unread; still originally shrink-wrapped in publisher`s plastic foil. Hardcover in linen with a poster of a photographic composition (1060 x 420 mm) conceived by the artist. 275 x 230 mm. 128 pages. 75 black and white photographs. Photos: Michael Ackerman. Text in english. Perfect condition! Collector`s copy! "The first publication of End Time City listed Michael Ackerman as a major figure in photography. Twenty years later, this new edition, reimagined by the artist, presents a selection of his iconic photographs, enriched with many completely new images, taken during his recent trips to Benares, in 2018 and 2020. This new visual corpus gives to see a greater presence of animals in Ackerman`s universe. The latter takes us on a crazy stroll through the narrow streets of Benares, the most sacred city in Hinduism, which welcomes pilgrims who have come to die here to erase their sins and put an end to the cycle of rebirth. Saturated with dust, populated by ghostly presences with intense gazes, Ackerman`s photographs render a world bordering on daydreaming. This new opus unfolds in a revised format and visual sequences, punctuated by new media, contact sheets, Polaroids, panoramics, leaflets, etc., which restore all the power and singularity of Ackerman`s photographic writing. Christian Caujolle, one of the first to discover this work in 1997 and author of an essay in the original edition of End Time City in 1999, wrote a special text for this new version of the book." Rilegato. Condizione: buono. prima edizione. Text: Adam Cohen & Christian Caujolle Publisher: Nathan, New York, 1999, First edition Hardcover with picture tipped-in under acetate dust jacket, 4°, 28x31 cm, 136 Pages with black&white photographs Condition: Good. Cover protect with acetate. Last white page probably has been cutted. light/very light yellowing on the edges of the pages Language: French Michael Ackerman's first book comprises primarily images made in Benares between 1993 and 1997. Though the title refers to the cremation grounds to which people travel from all over India to end their temporal existence, Ackerman's photographs are kinetically alive. His eye ranges from the streets to the cremation grounds, from interior moments to ritual dances. The approximately 70 images depart from straight documentary by inviting bursts of light and dark, blur, grain, and texture as aesthetic components. The result is a compelling collection of charged images.

Ackerman, Michael, 1967-. End time city: photographs. With a conversation between Michael Ackerman and Alexis Schwarzenbach and a text by Christian Caujolle. Translation Caujolle, Simon Pleasance, Fronza Woods. Zurich ; New York: Scalo, 1999, stated First Scalo edition, 135pp., transparent thick plastic dust-jacket is wavy along spine ane edge of spine, and has numerous light scratches, very good large oblong dark gray cloth with fresh red wrap-aroundd band. First published in French in 1999. - The Indian city of Benares, the holy City of Light on the shores of the Ganges, is one of the oldest cities in the world, and one of the most frequently photographed. Ackerman has created an overwhelming and deeply personal portrait of the city which he visited for the first time in 1991. Eschewing stereotypical representations of Benares, Ackerman's photographs testify to the sensitivity of the personal relationship he forged with the city: intense glances from people in the streets, dreamlike observations of a monkey balancing through electrical wires, moving and dignified images of mourners at the cremation grounds. Working in a variety of formats. Ackerman creates a moving and radically personal portrait of human life and death that transcends the particularities of this ancient city and speaks universally. 9783908247135 ISBN 3908247136.

Condizione: Wie neu. Scalo, Zurich. 1999. First edition, first printing. Ackerman`s first, brilliant photobook in excellent condition. Hardcover with dustjacket and bellyband. 350 x 275 mm. 138 pages. Text in english. Condition: Book and dustjacket and bellyband like new. Overall near mint, near perfect condition! In this condition really hard to find! Collector`s copy! Michael Ackerman, american, born in 1967 in Tel Aviv, lives in Berlin. Since his first exhibition, in 1999, Michael Ackerman has made his mark by bringing a new, radical and unique approach. His work on Varanasi, entitled "End Time City," breaks away from all sorts of exoticism or any anecdotal attempt at description, to question time and death with a freedom granted by a distance from the panoramic whose usage he renewed to squares or rectangles. In black and white, with permanent risk that led him to explore impossible lighting, he allowed the grainy images to create enigmatic and pregnant visions. Michael Ackerman seeks and finds in the world he traverses, reflections of his personal malaise, doubts and anguish. He received the Nadar Award for his book "End Time City" in 1999, and the Infinity Award for Young Photographer by the International Center of Photography in 1998.****************Scalo, Zurich. 1999.
